This summer makes 23 years of finishing, day in day out. And, what do i do after a long day of skimming popcorn ceilings? I come home and watch videos of guys finishing. Lol. I’m a general contractor, but I do all my own work, besides plumbing and electrical. It’s so difficult to find trustworthy guys and reliable guys that I gave up on subcontracting insulation, drywall hanging, finishing etc… in a way, I’m glad for it, because I learned an awful lot the first time I hung and finished a house, because when I primed it, I saw all the mistakes I made. I’ve learned a lot from your videos in the last couple years as well, and now I can finish with confidence, knowing that when I prime and paint it’ll look perfect! Unfortunately I only get to do a substantial sized finishing job every 3-4 months, since I have do everything else as well! Love these trades, even though they beat the snot out of you! Great video, as usual, doc!

It is deeply satisfying to watch someone use professional tools and be this fast and this effective/efficient. I was skeptical when I saw an hour long video but I'm fifteen minutes in and it's the first time I've ever seen drywall done this quickly. I have a one room job at home and need to learn proper techniques so it doesn't suck. Also it's very satisfying sand nostalgic how close the Drywall Doctor sounds to one of the Hensons.

I am a beginner DIYer and I love your educational descriptions, not only of what you do, but why you do what you do. The grunting is good👍; glad I am not alone with that. I've literally done every type of taping...by hand, with hoppers, banjos, bazookas, hawk and trowel (which i prefer), boxes, flushers, etc etc There's nothing you can tell me that I don't know however I do appreciate you... There is definitely a right way

When I first started, I worked in a modular home plant. Didn't sand my own work. Once I became a sub, I quickly learned, that while I could finish, I needed a lot of polish. Started approaching each job as learning experiences. What do I find myself grinding at with a pole or sanding block and why? What can I do to correct it. Now when I finish, I put everything I can into an area that the pole sander gets it. When I'm done pole sanding, detail the 3-ways, check around electrical boxes, clean up and roll out

No the only time I put a mud film on the entire surface is with a high gloss. And I do that differently then others. Look for my level 5 series

I've never heard of delayed shrinkage (I was in the swimming pool!) and never ran into the issue. Then again, I'm pretty slow at taping. My work gets plenty of time to dry.

Nice video we do it pretty similar except only pre fill the bad stuff and my dad does butt joints 1 down the middle 2 on the sides leaves them until scim coat then runs the 2 and then when it sets up scims very tight slim to tie in everything in but like your way better. Then 3 coats on screws but I think we could probably get away with 2 but scared lol.

Prefill is the best. And guess what people are learning. You can do it and do it quick and it makes the job that much better. It all rolls downhill in finishing drywall. Each stage helps the next.

I saw your video years ago when I was just getting into taping & mudding & it helped me tremendously! Every time I have a taping & mudding job, I don't even bother lookin for anybody else anymore, I come straight back to your videos and am impressed all over again. What a talent! On my last mudding & taping job however, I was mudding & taping new drywall and I got these "tadpoles" looking things after I final sanded everything and it only became visible to me after the walls were painted... They weren't really specific to 1 area, it was sort of all over the basement. Any tips or advice on how to avoid those Doc? Somebody said to me it could have been from over mixing the mud? I briefly mixed the mud each new day that I came back to work on the basement, just because I let it sit in water over night so it wouldn't dry up.. ??

It's not from over mixing. Sometimes well water can have an effect on your mud. That happen to me and it turns out a mineral in the water had a big impact on the mud.

I also walk on buckets, when working on 8ft ceilings and walls. I stack two empty buckets and flip it upside down and get on the bottom. Just thought that might be a bit safer.

The light you don't see is awesome and lights up the entire room. I see more in the wet mud when applying it and know what to sand and touch up. And there is no problems two coating the same day since +3. The old mud before +3 I couldn't do that.

Doc any advice on how to deal with a wall to ceiling intersection that is very wavy? 110yr old balloon framed house. Ledger is all over the place. If I go with paper tape I know it will end up being a wavy disaster. Thought about using inside corner bead to try and "construct" a straight corner but seems like a long shot. My house was built in 1887 and I have a lot of angles like that. I use nocoat inside corner bead like you said but still it's just the character of the age of the house I had to accept

Sometimes the butt joints stick out to much and it's hard to split them with the 10 inch box creating a big hump on the wall do you ever have that problem?

Hi, I have Level 5 smooth drywall. The painter came in and sprayed Kelly Moore Level 5 Primer/sealer WITHOUT dusting the powdery drywall and his colleague backrolled the spray with a .5" nap roller. The result is I have a stipple texture(!) on my smooth walls and dust UNDEER the primer on my baseboards! Since the Primer is advertised as "sandable", should I sand the texture off with 220 grit sandpaper? And if so, what do I do then (i.e. re-prime. or re-mud)? Thanks in advance.....

If it sands you should be able to just paint. Good painters would just spray primer, lightly sand with a sand pole and then roll on the paint twice.

If it's a big job you'll want to spray and roll but you will always want to roll it out.

Yes and no . Sometimes I'll shove the 10 or 12 right into the angles because the butt is high on one side and needs to be floated out.

I saw you spray your bazooka with WD-40. That doesn't wear out the seals faster? Someone told me I should only use bazooka oil but it's pretty expensive

I've been using WD-40 for 47 years never ever had a problem. Do not use car oil on any taping tools. Trust me it ruined my box and bazooka seals.

I always was thought it was, tape and two coats, if you're going to texture, and tape and three coats for a smooth finish. But it certainly looks like you have a perfectly finished smooth job, with tape and two coats.

I really don't bid work anymore I have my clients and they just tell me when it's ready I bill them when I'm done. Otherwise between $2 and $3 per square foot for everything hanging taping materials it's hard now because materials are all over the place

I'm a drywall finisher here in Northwestern New Hampshire. I've been hand taping since about 2000. I'm the only guy in my area and have struggled with pricing. Truth is being the only guy around I feel like charging a lot forces folks to pay me whatever I ask and I'm not ok with that. On the other hand I've underbid myself pretty bad on a couple occasions. Is there a resource you know of where you can compare prices in your state or county? Appreciate any advice.

I’ve been taping hawk and trowel and pan with knife for 15 years. After watching your videos, along with a few others, I’ve decided to change things up. 2 months ago I bought my first bazooka (lvl 5). Next tools on my list- 2 1/2 inch angle head and 3 1/2 angle head. Any brand you would recommend (I don’t mind spending money for Quality) and with out a mud runner do you think a roller will do the job on the finish coat?

Hi buddy. I hate wearing a mask too. Im an electrician so i have to cut out a lot of plaster and drywall. The best mask i found is the milwaukee with the breather hole. Its adjustable and honestly its really good. I get the 10 packs at home depot. Edit im in chicago.

The 12’’ was at 3-4 when you were skimming?

Not sure what the question is. I don't think I used a 12" knife but would have used a 12" box to skim.

They have stools that room and press down when you stand on them if you want to move something with your feet rather then a bucket
