The floating walls are due to bentonite clay in the soil. It's to prevent the structure from being damaged when the slab inevitably lifts during expansion of the soil

We have some weirdo ‘expansive soil’ here in Colorado. When it rains, the soil turns into an expanding, slimy slurry. Can’t plant shrubs or trees near the house, as any irrigation will cause the soil to expand, resulting in a cracked foundation, or a cracked basement wall. When the soil dries out, it becomes either hardened, dry clay clods, or it crackles and turns into a dry powder. It takes years to build really good rich soil out here. In the meantime, we battle the bark beetles, Japanese beetles, and the Emerald ash borers that are decimating our evergreens, grasses and plants, and ash trees.

That's looking awesome and the craftsmanship is fantastic! You guys are so close! I can't say I know exactly the stress and the tiring days you're going through, but I can say I've been in a pretty similar situation! We added onto our kitchen in 2021, all the work being done by me, a few of my brothers, and my Dad. Wife and I had a 2yr old and 3mo old. We didn't have any code inspections to meet, so that wasn't a worry. But we live on a slab home so the concrete for the addition had to be pretty dang close to the original kitchen slab. It was sooooo tiring and stressful living in a workzone with two little kids and being unable to use our kitchen for 2mo, but, the end result was so incredibly satisfying making it so worth all the work and stress!

I don’t care for drywall anymore. When we refurbished our home 8 yrs ago with limited finances, we drywalled. Granted you can repaint anytime so you can easily change colors or shade. I really like the old school paneling (not from the last 40, 50 yrs ago, the older style) and different designs of real wood. That is a really nice addition to your home. You are surely going to love it.

Just remember with that dual zone - it can still only do air conditioning OR heating, not one in each zone. We have issues sometimes with In-Law quarters where the parents want heating at the same time the kids want AC. No-Can-Do with only one condenser.

@katchmeifyoucan11313 ай бұрын
@@homethatilove4595 Maybe they still can. Or write on the unpainted dry wall. I think that as long as its there is what matters. We did this while remodeling our ensuite.
@GeorgeP10663 ай бұрын
For real though, this is a great tip. I always write "hail satan" on the inside of my drywall for that very reason. The magical energy of *checks notes* writing down some words does a great job of keeping religious nutjobs away.
@katchmeifyoucan11313 ай бұрын
@@GeorgeP1066 Its a very good thing that Dude Dad and his family are are believers in God and his Word.. I don't think that they will be writing anything like that.
@GeorgeP10663 ай бұрын
@@katchmeifyoucan1131 and yet I'm pretty confident in my memory the bible takes a very strong stance against witchcraft and magic, which is what writing words on the bones of a building and hoping for mystical benefits as a result. I'm not a believer in Christian doctrine, but I'm pretty confident that the requirement is to have Jesus in your heart, not in your drywall, so I'm not sure why Bible-based witchcraft is your go to, or why you think it's a nice thing to leave in your walls for future inhabitants of your house.
