I bought the R1 about a month ago. For me it's perfect. I did spend over a decade of my life racing so maybe that's why it feels like home. I read a comment on here that the only positive thing somebody said was "it was fast" after a test ride. Each to their own but I think they have missed the point. Is it a great commuter? No Is it a tourer? No Is it plush over bumps? No Is it nice to ride sensibly in traffic? No What it does do is turn fast, change direction faster than any 1000cc bike has any right to, holds a line through a corner, feels nervous at times, has a ridiculously high first gear and will eat your licence. The brakes could be stronger but I'll have to try different pads. Throttle is quite snatchy, particularly through slow corners so I just leave it in PWR3 you soon get used to it. I switch it back to 1 and 2 sometimes but end up going back to 3 as it just works out faster. You can adjust the settings on the fly you just need to hold the mode button a bit longer. The PWR setting can only be changed with the throttle closed.

Gotta say as an American, you guys are my favorite of ALL the pro's! You two and Lambchops for his reviews, no other reviews needed for me, you guys are SO entertaining it's awesome! I watch all your seperate channels as well. Barron's stuffs great, his review of the MT10 was one of the deciding factor of me getting the US version at Launch (FZ10) and as my first Supernaked (11 previous sport bikes) I loved it! Sure wish we have the SP here! Barron is correct the mic does NO justice on the Crossplane 4 , I did a link pipe /cat delete race filter and tune and my gosh it sounds epic! Nothing like your R1M tho! 😍 total random but say one locally in park city utah for sale at a car dealership $13,500 US for an R1M, 2,500 miles, wanted to snatch it solely for the re-sale. Took 4 hours online for it to sell ! 😩 I'd deal with my bad back for an r1M . Had a '15 R1 and loved it but I'm an old 40 year old broken man from a Ducati accident so Supernaked it is! Anyway wow blabbin when this is an ollllld video no one will seee lol. Ugh... Divorce sucks!

The 1199R I rode was ridonculous. Just power and agility everywhere. Good to hear the 1299 is a step up from the 1199. I don't think I'll ever sell my 1098 because it's from the last pure zero e-assist Ducati superbike generation, but it'd be nice to pick up a new gen 1299S or... if they make a comfy 1299 Streetfighter S.

weird, I found the R1M actually pretty comfy to ride. Nothing like a naked bike but for a supersport bike it was actually not too bad. For reference, I rode the R1M 150 miles from San Diego to Mulholland (The Snake). If anything, I thought the 1299 Panigale was more uncomfortable because of the heat, especially in LA traffic.

I want the good old ball grabbing, neck snapping Ducati back :( I don't care if it's a worse bike on paper or round a track, I think the magic of Ducati is its insanity. No one buys a Lamborghini to be fast around a track

We'll just ignore the fact they hold more championships, race wins and podiums than any other bike manufacturers then shall we? People buy them to go fast because they used to be thorough bred race bikes built for going ape shit providing money wasn't an issue. Thats the charm they hold for me.

I agree with your observation that you have to drive the R1 full out to appreciate it. I have found that to be the case with all the Japanese bikes I've owned (ZX-7x2, CBR 600/900/929, GSX-R 750x2) The 900SS and 999 Ducatis I owned, I didn't need to do that. There is something beautiful about lumbering along with a V-Twin that you just don't get from an inline 4. In other words, you don't need to do "go directly to jail" speeds on the Ducati to enjoy the riding experience. On the Japanese bikes I always found myself having to ring their necks to put a smile on my face.

I rode the new 2015 Ducati S from a friend of mine and yes the bike is amazing!!! Nothing in the world of superbikes can be compared with Ducati. Ducati is a beast! angry motor! Amazing!!!! It's art! The R1 is a fantastic bike! At the track and on the city... I have no complaints about it... The brakes are insane they don't fade as they are talking about on this video and all the other stuff they are talking about it's not true! At the track I come 180mph and break start to break hard for the turn one and the power of the stock brakes are insane! All day long... No issues at all. The difference for me on two bikes is pretty much that the Ducati takes a lot on the rider fiscal condition. You need to be in good shape to keep it up... After one day at the track your next day is rest... And I mean it! The R1 The power band is more mellow if you compare with the panigale. You will be fine for your next day at the track. City the r1 is like a Vespa :) mode C. Very gentle and no heat from the pipe. I like it a lot.. If I have to choose I will have both in my garage!

Truly enjoyed your review. I had 4 bikes on my list to buy this year. The R1M, RSV4RF, 1299s and the MV F4 RC. Rode them all except for the RC. Rode a std F4. Out of all the bikes the Duc was the one that got to my soul. Nothing else made me feel like I was riding something special. The only one that came close was the Ape. But the lack dealer support and the cramped feel of the bike made it not a good choice for me. I find it interesting though that any R1 owners thinks I am crazy for buying anything but the Yamaha. Yet everyone else from the BMW, Aprilla, MV camp have nothing but praise of my choice. Saying that you can not make a bad decision this year.

Interesting set of comments. I've not ridden either one. The most recent big sporty I have ridden, was a '12 model ZX10R, slightly sorted. I noted with that, if you rode it like you'd stolen it, it was wonderful. But if you rode it like Ned Flanders, it didn't try real hard to hide its contempt for you. I also noted, my brand new zero miles GSX1100 in 1980, while new and tidy, was a much better and nicer general purpose run around than any modern sporty. At less than 6/10ths, the handling was fine, the engine was a thing of beauty, it was practical, and it was quite easy to ride. That's not really true of any modern sporty. My son's 954 comes quite close. My ZX14 ... you get used to it. It sort of feels like a sports bike, leans in and stands up like one, and the engine is nice, but it really doesn't corner like one. It's about a foot & a half too long, I think.

Would you say the Panigale lost some of it's "charm" by becoming so good at being a road bike? I had gotten very excited about the r1 and I had some mates ride one for a day and they hated it. What I want to know is the 1299 now practicle enough to use every day or at least every other day? And if you only could own one bike to do everything out of those 2 which one would it be? Hey AspieThinker these guys mirror your opinion of your review on the r1 in terms of practicality and aggressiveness on the road.

***** i bought a 796 thinking it was a compromise and what i found out is, even the hypermotard is to much power and speed for me and can be more than exciting enough to ride...AND...that it kinda sucks on the highway, sure its fast enough but with no windscreen and the lightweight combined with a taller stance means i get blow around alot so i wont be riding it to phoenix like i thought i would to help keep miles off my truck...i urge you to spend a day at a bike shop test riding to see which bike feels best(what a fun day that would be) and my bike still can do a burnout in first gear and long second gear wheelies so it does everything i want it to do besides looking good and sounding awesome(love the vtwin sound)

***** Neither...If you want a do it all bike. Look at a multistrada or something along those lines. Never anything "practical" about a ducati super bike. They're hot, all of em get around 100 miles a tank, and really encourage you to break the law with that snarling grunty engine. Trust me, I own one. Hey Baron, I've been thinking of trading my 899 up for the 1299 since it seems they've worked out a lot of the issues that the 1199 had. Extra power aside, how do you feel the two compare as a (primarily) street bike? Either I do this 'upgrade' or trade my 2012 S1000RR (base) up to a 2015 - I'm on the fence. Since you've owned and ridden all of these I'd love to hear your opinion. Great subjective review by the way. Are you guys planning a track segment with any of these bikes?

Great review ol' chaps. Commuting daily on an 1199S, maybe I can shed some light on why you'd shell out another 4 grand for the 'S.' Firstly, in the US we have super highways full of expansion joints and generally shit roads. I can hit a button and turn the dampers to the lightest setting and not get launched off the saddle at 80mph when traversing an expansion joint. Then when I get off on the twisty ramps, I can switch back and firm things up. Can't do that on the base. Secondly, unlike the base model, the 'S' has LED headlights which for people with poor night vision like myself, makes all the difference in the world. There's enough light that I can illuminate the road in front of the car in front of me, or use my tinted visor even at night. The lighter wheels and carbon bits are no biggy, but icing on the cake.
@FortyFourTeeth9 жыл бұрын
fluffymellons Just to clarify the question, as i think you mean why i 'wouldnt' shell out the extra dough? Ultimately, if money is a concern, which for most of us it is - the extra price jump for the S is 20% more expensive, and overall, i dont think the S is 20% better than the standard. hope this helps :)
@fluffymellons9 жыл бұрын
To your point, would I know what I'm missing if I owned a base 1299 and never owned a 1299S? No. In putting 13k worth of city miles on an S in little over a year there's a strong argument for the less punishing suspension and better night vision you get for the extra 20%. I guess 5k could get you a nice commuter bike as well. The adage that we're all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively applies. To each their own.

Are these guys sponsored or something? Ducati sportbikes are never comfortable or 'tame'. The most comfortable according to my experience is Diavel and Monster.

If you guys use a microphone pickup near the exhaust you can get some great bike noise recorded. Is that allowed? If so I cannot think of a reason that would be a nice editing feature

Should I wait for the new model BMW S1000RR or buy one of the current last of the line RR models?

I feel like like in a few years time the panigale would be such a great bike once they perfect everything.

Would love to see a review of the Lightning LS 218 from you guys, I'm not comparing it to these two or anything, i just didn't see anything good out there (it's probably not that easy to get hands-on) and would enjoy the review! Anyway, great job guys! Keep it up!

I hear you guys mention you would pick the R1 as a track bike. But later in the review you mention the brakes fade quickly, I'm confused :)
