In Japanese sports events such as this, it’s actually customary to look your opponent in the eye while bowing when you’re in very close proximity. Partially for the reason of - they can literally just punch you as hard as they can if they were an asshole. If you were on opposite sides of the ring, or the fight hasn’t started as we saw in his intro cutscene, you would bow without looking them in the eye. Pistol Honda is as traditional as they get!

Agreed, I also think that a person being "a glass jaw" is a character archetype or trait or whatever, and Joe is also a generic enough name that it's used as an improper noun sometimes like John is on occasion in English, so it's correct in a way for him to say what they translated as "a" Also I'm pretty sure that the French use je suis sometimes in situations where it isn't technically grammatically correct, just like every language in the real world 🤷♂️ I know very very little French though!

3:38 I actually have an Idea for why he yells "Combat Boots!". The german word for glove is Handschuh. A compound word, meaning "hand shoe/boot". So this line would be a genius pun, because he is wearing two different types of combat boots.
@overlordalfredo6 жыл бұрын
Neat idea but I don't think this is the case. German military combat boots are famous for excellent quality and a lot of German soldiers define prestige and discipline over the shape and model of the combat boots they are wearing. *Literally you spend about 1/4 of your base military training in germany cleaning your boots!* - especially infantry units need to have shiny boots even when having an inspection in the middle of a combat training... ridiculous, but no joke! So the reason for this battle cry is most likely just the pure pride for having nice and clean high value combat boots.

I am Japanese.🇯🇵 Piston hondo says Japanese proverbs at intermissions. I will try to explain. ①「心頭滅却すれば、火もまた涼し」 (If your head and your heart are at peace , even a fire stays cool. ) One way of holding one's mind is to stop feeling any pain. ②「肉を斬らせて骨を断つ」 (Let your enemy cut your flesh and you will break his bone.) A metaphor for inflicting a greater blow on an opponent while being prepared to hurt yourself. ③「虎穴に入らずんば虎児を得ず」 (If you do not enter the tiger's den , you won't catch his cubs.) It means that in order to acquire a tiger cub, you have to take a risk in the cave where a tiger lives, so unless you take a risk, you cannot achieve great success or achievement. It is a proverb of similar meaning to 『Nothing ventured, nothing gained.』 ④「勝って兜の緒を締めよ」 (Keep the helmet of victory fastened.) It means that if you win a battle and take off your helmet with a sigh of relief, the enemy will not always attack you, so even if you win, don't let your guard down and be more careful. It is a proverb of similar meaning to 『Don't halloo till you are out of the wood.』 I hope it will be helpful to you. Thank you for reading. ( `Д´) 「礼!(Rei)」 ☆(*△((○=(・_・○ smash!

Charge! 8:05: Now lick the dust off my soles. (I'm not kidding, this phrase isn't used normally here in India either. More on this ahead.) 8:13: Accurate, but it's actually a commonly used mini-insult here. I get why people not familiar with local Hindi would be surprised. Now the thing is, most of the lines he uses sound very forced and unnatural. Some phrases, like the dust off the soles thing, is something you'd hear probably in the 1900's. Others, like the "Oh, betrayed", don't even make sense even in the context of Hindi. Either way, can I get a pin? :3

3:38 German military combat boots are famous for excellent quality and a lot of German soldiers define prestige and discipline over the shape and model of the combat boots they are wearing.

I should mention that while bowing is a way to show respect in Japanese culture, to keep your eyes on someone while you're bowing is more like a sarcastic insult. Piston Hondo is being rude to you, punching him in the face is kind of justified. EDIT: Ok, I came across some more information that I feel like I thought I should mention. "When Piston Hondo bows to Little Mac in the Wii version, he looks him in the eye, which in normal circumstances would be a sign of disrespect in Japan. However, martial arts combatants bow without breaking eye contact IF they are within striking distance. This is simply being prudent and has nothing to do with the etiquette of bowing." Source: Punch-Out Wiki, Piston Hondo's page
@HardlyBardly5 жыл бұрын
The updated bowing etiquette during combat is correct. When I was training in martial arts as a child, my teacher gave me the same lesson about bowing. Before and as we were leaving the dojo, no eye contact was allowed, with the bows themselves being quick in comparison to the more formal bow before sparring (which we were reprimanded over and allowed "free shots" on someone silly enough to drop their gaze). Dropping eye contact during an actual fight means you lose out on the subtle eye motions people make as they are about to strike in a certain direction, so he hammered that into us less because of the respect part and more so we wouldn't get our butts kicked during a real fight. My teacher relied heavily on slapstick humor around us small fry, but lessons he taught us cane from his own teacher, who trained in Okinawa during the 60s or 70s. It's been a long time so I can't remember the original decade. Just for a funny addition, the sane teacher used to square up in the ring against me on his knees because I was so little. I grew up to be taller than him -- which is saying something because I'm still very short! XD
@matthewmitchell335 жыл бұрын
Tbh Mac is so short Hondo would have to bow comically low for that.
@SwerveStarEx5 жыл бұрын
@Just Squid It's more that I knew that you're supposed to avert your eyes when bowing through prior knowledge, but while I was looking through the wiki pages on the boxers (was checking to verify their special attack names if they had any), I saw this in the "trivia" section for Piston Hondo by chance.

Small corrections: Je Suis Glass Joe is actually correct. Sorry for a misunderstanding on our half. As well as, J'ai gagne is I won, not I win, Piston Honda, isn't saying "Oh sushi." He is still saying sushi, however just in a very polite way. Bald Bull- His name would be "kel boğa" in Turkish. Google translate has failed us. Also he's not saying "spanked" but instead "beaten up. " Von Vaisser- Tantenkaffee means Aunt's Coffee, not Aunt's Tea.
