I've just started out with wood turning and all my tools are made by me, tool steel that I have and old files but I would never have thought to use an old breaker bar, this opens up a whole new avenue of possibilities, just need to learn to sharpen properly. I love home made stuff that works. Love you videos and your choice of music is top drawer.

I would give you ten thumbs up alone for that recycling. Well done. Not many people I know would have even considered the reuse of that bar. Steel is as valuable as any other metal. We have only limited resources on this planet. And that cedar turning looked so pretty. Please stay healthy and take care.

Great ideal to use the breaker bar handle. Tire irons work well and same with leaf springs.

I have been thinking of doing this with a carbide burr in my die grinder in a tool stand, with the steel in a cross slide vise.

Your a braver man than me, I would have taken that to a machine shop to get that flute milled. Will be interesting to see how it holds it's edge over time, as I'm not sure how consistent the metal is in those tools. I would have been more inclined to make it into a hollowing tool with a carbide scrapper insert.

A good friend of mine has a machine shop and i was going to do a collaboration with him on this little project. But he got busy and then I got curious.... hehe at that point i just wanted to see if I could do it :) It cuts decent for what it is, but may have to take a torch to it and harden it a bit :) Although sometimes I like a tool that is a bit duller than the rest for cutting resin, i find that its less likely to cut in to deep and cause chip out. Time will tell.

ballast...that was my first thought when you were setting up, wheres your bags of gravel on the jig to stop viberations and jumping.... Ballast is very useful. I made a lathe once just from 4x2's, OSB sterling board and about 8 bags of shingle

I have been inspired. Going to dig through my broken tool pile now and make some gouges. Awesome idea sir! But please, wear some eye protection when you’re using that sharpener. I want to see a lot more videos from you!
@dukaheritage94454 жыл бұрын
There's a few more tool builds coming, I need a deep hollowing tool rest, so when I build that I'll be using the same heat needed to bend the rest to harden that gouge. It cuts great when sharp but it needs a little hardening. Stay tuned :)

I use ArtResin, Its definitely not the cheapest, but I've found after many problems with others that it flows the best for a finish and does great also with casting. Its around $120/gallon : /
