It’s advanced algebra not your 7th grade math, advanced algebra involves complex concepts beyond basic arithmetic, and calculators often use approximations for irrational numbers like the square root of 2 (√2), which is approximately 1.41421356. While these approximations are usually sufficient for everyday calculations, certain mathematical operations, especially those involving iterations, recursions, or very small intermediate results, can lead to inaccuracies. For precise calculations, especially when dealing with irrational numbers or fractions, symbolic manipulation is essential. This allows for exact results rather than approximations. For example, consider the equation 2^2 * (√2)^2. Simplifying this, we get 4 * 2 = 8, which is accurate but does not equate to 2^3 (which is also 8). He highlights the importance of understanding and applying algebraic principles correctly, maybe don’t judge others so quickly and hop off the bandwagon.

The greatest barrier to learning is not a lack of understanding, but a false belief that one already understands. Not only does Terry not understand basic mathematics--he doesn't even know what the purpose of math is. It's like true understanding is absent in his brain, and in its place is some kind of dummy blocking his ability to recognize how wrong he is. If you tried to explain multiplication to him with examples, he wouldn't learn because he doesn't even realize that those things are what multiplication is trying to describe. He doesn't see that math is merely a language to describe what is, and not some kind of magic art that makes things appear and disappear. In order to get him to understand, it's as if you'd have to completely wipe his brain of all things relating to math and start over from the beginning. That's how poorly he understands the subject and how much his bias blocks him from realizing it. He thinks math is some kind of magic art that makes things appear and disappear, when in reality, it's simply a language meant to describe what is and isn't.
