I believe the lore is that human colonists stopped at Salusa Secundus and became House Corrin. House Corrin were the greatest house because the conditions they lived in made them tough. They lived on the harshest home of all the houses and when the Emperor moved to the current home world Salusa Secundus became a prison world that killed most who were sent there. Those who survived were repurposed as the Sarduakar. This is what made House Corrin the house of the emperor and gave them the military to hold it. But one group of colonists went beyond Salusa Secundus and found a place even more harsh and unforgiving, where life was possible but only just barely. That world was Arrakis. And generations of living on the harshest habitable world turned them into peerless warriors. Duke Leto knew this but even he probably underestimated how many Freemen there are and how powerful they could be. Everyone else is clueless except maybe the Guild but they say nothing because they don't want to risk interruption of the flow of spice. Or at least that is roughly how I remember it from the books

The elder Fremen knows every sound the desert makes, this wasn't one of them. Love that the scene gives us so much about Fremen culture without it feeling compressed or overcomplicated. In a bit under a minute thirty you find out that the Fremen drink coffee and chat together, that they make the coffee out of their own moisture as it is the most economical, that they talk about the Mahdi and what that means for their future, and that they no matter the time of day are supreme guerilla fighters, ready to spring an ambush out of the sands on a moments notice because they are from the desert, the Sardaukar are not and they pay a high price for it. The sound editing does so much, the Sardaukar walking and breathing is just that bit louder, we understand that they don't know how easy they are to spot.

Everyone's talking about the battle and how badass the Fremen are. But can I take a moment to point out how badass that coffee is? Water on Arrakis is rare, right? So if you have water, you don't want to waste it. That means, if they're making coffee and using their spit, a custom used only as a right of respect, as a means to merely make a simple beverage, for which they also added something and looked excited to have (in the squeeze bottle). In most scenes the Fremen are very stoic but as soon as they make coffee, they seem rather cheerful. Let's also not forget how little coffee is made with all the phlegm they have to utilize, their version of coffee is like an expresso shot. Yet they're still delighted to have some on a quick break. That coffee slaps. I don't even have to question it. Best damn coffee in the galaxy.
@Michael-kd1ho3 ай бұрын
It's not spit, it's recycled water from the cache pockets in their stillsuits. Note how each man contributes some, so as to be fair - water is precious. The coffee is just regular roasted coffee beans, but mixed with spice melange, like everything in the Fremen diet. Herbert modeled the Fremen after Arab Bedouins - they make coffee just like this, and add ground cardamom spice. I've tasted Bedouin coffee, that shit will grow hair on your tongue.

The 'thopter circled once over them in a tight curve, came back for a dust- shrouded landing in front of the Fremen. Five men swarmed from the 'thopter and Hawat saw the dust-repellent shimmering of shields and, in their motions, the hard competence of Sardaukar. "Aiihh! They use their stupid shields," the Fremen beside Hawat hissed. He glanced toward the open south wall of the sink. "They are Sardaukar," Hawat whispered. "Good." The Sardaukar approached the waiting group of Fremen in an enclosing half- circle. Sun glinted on blades held ready. The Fremen stood in a compact group, apparently indifferent. Abruptly, the sand around the two groups sprouted Fremen. They were at the ornithopter, then in it. Where the two groups had met at the dune crest, a dust cloud partly obscured violent motion. none of the films ever REALLY get across just how good the sardaukar are, and by extension just how good duncan and fremen are. After seeing the movie I had to explain to my wife who never read the books that the fremen were the best fighters in the universe. In the new film they do tell you, but the only time you see them fight they either get dominated by duncan and fremen , or when they sneak up behind atreides soldiers. You don't really get a good idea that these guys are basically special forces and berserkers all in one. I wish they had given us a few more scenes of Atreides troops fighting Harkonnens to show JUST how much better the atreides are, and then have atreides fighting one on one with Sardaukar to show exactly how much better the sardaukar are over harkonnen soldiers. It just think it would have made this scene a much better demonstration of the league fremen and duncan are in (especially for folks who are being introduced to dune for the first time). In the old film, they are kind of a joke... so i was hopeful that they would be on FULL display this time. maybe in the next chapters? hope so

I agree more scenes would of been nice, but the scenes they do have are good. The Atredies solidly attack, with fewer troops, the Harkonnens and are beating them back with almost no losses and then are just wiped by a small handful of Sardaukar. It tells us what we need to know, if we are paying attention, but it is pretty quick about it. A serious issue with the movie is that it expects doesn't explain everything at times well enough for someone who doesn't know Dune at all, but I think that would be pretty hard no matter who was making the movie. Even the TV series had troubles with that.

A history of the culture from the wiki, you're very correct about the Arabic inspiration, more specifically I think Berber tradition. [[[[[ WARNING: SOME SPOILERS BELOW ]]]]] __ __ __ Little is known of the evolution of the Zensunni faith. What is beyond doubt is that the Zensunni belief was an amalgam of two ancient religions: Sunni Islam and Zen Buddhism. They were followers of a schismatic sect that broke away from the teachings of Maometh (the so-called "Third Muhammed") about 1381 BG. The Zensunni religion is noted chiefly for its emphasis on the mystical and a reversion to "the ways of the fathers." Most scholars name Ali Ben Ohashi as leader of the original schism but there is some evidence that Ohashi may have been merely the male spokesman for his second wife, Nisai [1]. The Zennsunni faith was based on the teachings of the Ulema and thought to have it's origins in the fiqh. It was partially preserved in the Book of Kreos and the Shah-Nama. One of the zensunni names of god was al-mutakallim, they also believed in a number of kiswa such as Auliya, the female at the left hand of God, shaitan and his realm of Gehenna. One Zensunni Philosopher of note was Bu Ji. Later, the Zensunni predisposition was manipulated by the Bene Gesserit, via their Missionaria Protectiva arm and Panoplia Propheticus strategy, for their own political objectives. One of the most prominent homes of Zensunni beliefs, Arrakis, was of particular interest in this regard. The exclusivity of the critical Spice Melange on the planet made the resident Fremen, staunch followers of Zensunni, of natural interest to the Bene Gesserit. The emergence of the powerful Paul Atreides, and his adoption of Fremen ways, gave Zensunni beliefs a dramatic new popularity. After his ascension to Emperor Paul embarked on a ferocious jihad that brought great violence and turmoil. The stark contrast of these actions vis-à-vis pacifist Zensunni beliefs was not lost on some of the faithful.

Considering a Swordmaster of Ginaz can tear through numerous Sarduakar before going down you'd think Shaddam would have either taken Ginaz and incorporated it in to his personal holdings and made Swordmasters part of the Imperial house, or failing that, destroyed Ginaz and Swordmasters altogether. Seems like a major liability to have special people running around who can tear through the soldiers who are supposed to be the absolute top of the food chain that enforece the will of the Golden Lion throne.

Hyper-focused warriors have always, *will always,* defeat elite forces. That cannot be prevented. And yet, no elite unit on the planet tries to make hyper-focused warriors. Why? Because military skills are a continuum, and excessive focus in one area means neglect in others. It's clear that the Sarduakar have a broad skillset, one that encompasses many different combat environments. That they are dire close combatants as well as maintaining a broader skillset indicates just how elite they are. The Fremen, though, have been raised in a very specific environment, and have, of necessity, learned environmentally-specific combat. In the sand, they will *always* be better. That's no call for changing the Sarduakar's training though. When the fighting on Arakis is done, they will have to go elsewhere to fight, where the desert skills are irrelevant. Likewise, sure, a minor subset of hyper-focused warriors can excell against small unit Sarduakar in specific scenarios, that doesn't justify changing their demonstrated successful approach. The swordsmasters are a minority risk.

The emperor is not all powerful. The books discuss the tri-pod of power in the Dune universe, Emperor/Guild/Noble Houses. The Emperor can't simply take anything he wants. Almost anything yes but there are limits. The Ginaz predate the Emperor and were well established as an Elite Order with very few members. There are for example less Ginaz Swordsmaster than noble houses because many have none in their service and those that do might have 1 or 2. So the Ginaz never represented a real threat to the Emperor. Sure they can beat the Sardukar 1 on 1, 1 on 2 and so on but there are billions of Sardukar and even more members of the Imperial Army. They can't win a war with the Imperial House (not without unity of Noble Houses and the Guild).

Given that it is a clear liquid and they are drinking out of a shotglass, I assumed it was some sort of vodkamaker, that rehydrates some solidified alcohol tablet / powder and maybe even cooles it down or something. Its obviously a small amount of clear liquid that would be serves cold, you would not want to lose water to steam, so coffee just doesnt make sense.

This is my favorite Book. I Love this film. But... I'm going to be that guy. The Fremen would have never used spit for coffee service. They would have used water from their catch pockets. The coffee maker would need a filtration system that it didn't have, in this scene. But, in this context, this scene puts across the notion of how important the understanding of moisture (not just water) is to surviving on Dune. Did I say I Love this film?

The Sardaukar had shields and the Fremen only had melee weapons. So they hid themselves ASAP where they'd been drinking coffee (in front of the door they were guarding), and waited for a place they knew the enemy would have to step. Makes sense to me. Would have worked too if not for Sardaukar numbers
@cesaravegah37872 жыл бұрын
Lasguns and other projectile weapons are rarely used on the fictional Universe, otherwise yes, hitting them at descent would be advantageus.
@mrquirky36262 жыл бұрын
As seen in the scene earlier where the Baron floats over to the captured Duke Leto, the anti-gravity suspensors in the movie don't just move a person up and down, but also side to side. If the Sardaukar saw the Fremen try to line up under them to attack, they probably could have just changed their trajectory and landed in a different place. The Fremen would have completely lost the element of surprise and likely be surrounded.
