Based on what you said here, I'll give this one a try...I wasn't sure if I would previously. I saw the first one (and the '80s movie, and the SyFy series of the first book, and I also read several of the books and know some of the lore of the books I haven't read), and honestly didn't like it very much. The opening scene was the best version of that scene that I had seen out of the three film/TV versions; but the rest? Chalamet and Zendaya look the part very much indeed (as did Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar Isaac), but there was just something missing, I felt. I had a talk with a friend of mine about the scene toward the end of the 2021 film where Paul fights Jamis, and we had the same view on it: it wasn't good, and was staged totally wrong. The Fremen know that one should conserve as much of one's personal moisture as possible, so they would never willingly fight in the open daylight sun of Arrakis; and, because still suits and the water they carry are more valuable than individual human life in certain respects, they shouldn't have been wearing them at all for a knife fight in which, by the nature of the duel, one would be damaged would be a GIANT no-no. The SyFy series version of this scene was the best, in our view, because they fought in a cave away from the sunlight, and they were both nearly naked...so, it made more sense based on the culture and world-building of Dune, and it was also just that much more fun to watch with two attractive guys having a knife fight in their underwear, basically! Blood, Sex, Gore, Magic...you get all of them in that one scene, in certain respects, and the overall series is better for it. So, yeah. But you're right: Lord of the Rings and Dune are pretty much (for good and ill) the pinnacles of Fantasy and Sci-Fi, respectively, and actually came out around the same time. One of my friends that died in 2021 was a huge fan of both (he was a few days away from being 80 when he died...and he was also gay!), and somewhat lived his life by them, as they were that life-changing for him to have read in the '60s when they came out. He said the Litany Against Fear on a regular basis, and I have to admit--while I don't do it regularly!--I certainly think about it from time to time, as it is a great individual piece of poetic wisdom, and functions as a very good aphorism/proverb, in a sense. Arrival is an excellent film; I'm not as hot on Blade Runner, though, for the Villeneuve oeuvre, to use too much French (!?!).

Nice review my friend. 😁😁I do plan on seeing the movie hopefully this weekend. I may even rewatch the first one per your suggestions but I'm making no promises. I do love a good sci-fi film or series. Speaking of, did I even ask you about Star Trek: Discovery? 🤔🤔They dropped the trailer for the final season the other day.

@@blackgaycomicgeek That explains it. Star Trek has the most diverse cast and sexual orientations after The Original Series and even that one had Lt. Uhura. But if it's not your thing, it's not your thing 👍🏾Star Wars isn't my thing so I get it.👍🏾

I don't see why it isn't still a white-saviour/colonizer movie. Is it mitigated by a prophesy showing him scared at being super bad in the far future, so what, he's still doing it now. He's still a white guy coming in to sleep with the locals, be adopted and train as they are and ride a grandfather worm not seen in generations. He's still the legend and the great leader of the Fremen talked about on the planet and intergalactically. It's still a great film, but that is still there.

what solidified this still being a white savior movie for me was how Paul had no issue using the Fremen to fight his war and get revenge for his father/clan but he didn't honor or respect them enough to make one his empress. he made sure to keep the power in the hands of white ppl in the end.
