The only ones that the DUP represent is the Belfast ones that are stuck back in the past but that’s not even 10% now The so called protests & valence is only Belfast. While everyone else has moved on & want peace & stand by the Good Friday Agreement. They hate the fact that the majority of the country Catholics Protestants Nationalists Unionists & others alike voted against Brexit by a majority of 55.8% it’s time the DUP stop acting like Hitler & start respecting our democratic right as the poeple of Northern Ireland if they don’t they will find out how powerful we are in May 2022 & the Storment elections.

If I was Šefčovič , I would have replied to the first point by saying something like: "I have every sympathy. The Northern Ireland Protocol was something which we never wanted to negotiate. Northern Ireland did not vote to leave the EU, neither did Scotland, but the rest of the UK did and for us this is a matter of immense regret. We would have preferred the UK had voted to Remain. Unfortunately, the British government took the result of the June 2016 referendum to insist that the UK left the EU and that has consequences. Northern Ireland is a special place. The Good Friday Agreement means that there must not be a border on the island of Ireland. Brexit means the opposite. This created a conundrum, a paradox which had to be solved. Remember, the EU never asked for any of this. This is entirely the result of the UK's decision to leave. The question is: How do you resolve this conundrum? That is when we, the EU, in conjunction with the UK govt, drafted the Northern Ireland Protocol. Before we negotiated the Protocol, your prime minister repeatedly assured the British public that there would be no border down the Irish Sea. However, we here at the EU knew that was impossible. Leaving the EU meant there would have to be a border somewhere, and given Northern Ireland’s special status, we knew it could not be located on the island of Ireland as the Good Friday Agreement forbade it. Therefore the only other place it could be located would be down the Irish Sea. Your prime minister was jubilant when he signed the Protocol. He celebrated it vigorously to mask his hypocrisy. He knew what he was telling the British public and what he signed up to were two different things. So please, remember, the EU did not ask for any of this and we sympathise with your concerns, but this is what the British government wanted. The person you need to address your concerns to is your own prime minister.”

@estellapants
@estellapants 3 жыл бұрын
@Bertrand Rocher lol, I have never been called that before! Thank you for your comprehensive reply and apologies for any personal charges I layed against you. Without re-hashing our previous exchanges, there are things you write in your comment that I vehemently disagree with and I regard as being factually incorrect. At this point, we have both laid out our positions in a comprehensive manner so there is no point in going through it all again.. One interesting aspect though I would bring to your attention is this, your views of people in the ROI and their aspirations are well wide of the mark, their views on or support for Nationalism and re-unification are much more nuanced than just outright acceptance. Irish nationalists as you refer to them are not as numerous as you may think in the ROI, Republicans yes, Nationalists no. Much of the Nationalist community in NI are white collar affluent, middle class people who would not necessarily seek or support re-unification. The other point is regarding your assertion that " the EU gave away its right to carry out customs checks to the UK and such a task is normally done by EU customs officials." My understanding is that it is EU officials who carry out those checks albeit under threat not UK officials. Anyways, thank you again for your reply , be well and go safely.

Mr. Šefčovič was very polite. He was well within his rights to remind Mr. Stalford that it is the UK government that represents the interests of the Northern Irish and the DUP, and that if he was unhappy with the outcome of UK-EU negotiations, he should have a word with Westminster. But that would be undiplomatic, so he didn't say that. He is being the adult in the room. He did demonstrate that the EU has taken more consideration of the lot of N.I. than Westminster has.

Michael Mates, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland under John Major, and a pro-EU genuine 'one nation' Tory MP (now retired) knew that Brexit would pose a problem in Northern Ireland. Not only did he know this, but other (moderate) Tory MPs knew this too. Remember all those moderate Tory MP's who had the whip withdrawn from them? People like Ken Clarke, Oliver Letwin, David Gauke, Dominic Grieve, Sam Gyimah and Sarah Woolaston? They all knew that leaving the EU and the Single Market and the Customs' Union would lead to problems in Northern Ireland. As did Nick Boles, who crossed the floor of the house because he considered Theresa May's version of Brexit to be too hard. It simply isn't true to say that none of the Tories knew, or cared. Some of them did, but because they were saying something which Boris Johnson didn't want to hear, he got rid of them. The corrupt and mendacious mob now in the Cabinet can't say no-one knew. Their own (former) colleagues warned them often enough - it's just that the likes of JRM, Michael Gove and John Redwood didn't want to hear it.

I've said this before here many times. The DUP and this brexiteer in this clip are scouring around for anything to disagree with and the "never" is just another "no surrender!" The problem with this self loathing and paranoia is there is nobody at the gates throwing spears over the walls, if there is its the people of NI wondering what happened to their systems of education and health, to dealing with poverty and getting the best for farmers and understanding climate change. I've never heard the DUP, anyone of them mention these issues, issues in the south of Ireland we are always asking questions about every day on our news and current affairs programs. All they talk about is the protocol and the Windsor Agreement and where is my lambeg drum so they get the message we don't negotiate with anyone because we still live in the apartheid state we set up in 1922 and we want it back. This is what this brexiteer is saying obviously in their own interpretation of brexit that is different than anyone else on the planet. It really is like going back in a time machine to the days of Craig and that mindset never changes in the DUP. What can we say no to next is all they think about.
