i dont think people understand how difficult this song is. the way it jumps around and goes back and forth thru the break in a baritenors voice, and the vowels?? forget about it. derek is just so good that he can sing the last note on what seems to be a pretty pure "ur" vowel, and I have no clue how he does that

i can't explain this, but they are so russian. i mean they act so good, that i feel them. it seems to me they are of the same nationality as i am (russian). that's precious. they are completely into their roles, cultural and historical context. amazing
@92061561753 жыл бұрын
I'm really curious now if you can put a finger on what makes them seem Russian. I agree as an outsider but what specifically makes you feel a kinship?
@bethy_cuter3 жыл бұрын
@@9206156175 great question, if only i knew the answer 😅 first, the lyrics of course: we all learn Russian history in school lesson, so it is easy to match what he sings with real historical events. Besides, some lines are so strong, for example: "But tonight there's sky and quiet a view". That is literally what half of the Russian classic literature about. The most well-known author, who constitute the cultural heritage of the country, like Turgenev, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Chekhov, Bunin, for example, they all tried to describe that feeling of weird attachment to your homeland, even if you understand the all the government problems or want to leave the country. People who emigrated during the Revolution still missed Russia because of... something. Because they were born there, because they met people in the streets, because they know how the houses or the countryside looks like. That feeling is part of a culture, and the lyrics(es) of the songs in the Musical represent it perfectly for me. What else... gestures maybe. When he explains something, or shows her something - it is quite similar to what I sometimes see every day. The main reason I can come up with, is that their acting cause an association chain in my mind. Like I start to remember historical chronicles or history lessons or the huge amount of literature works of that time. The picture of Saint-Petersburg there: It is one hour from my house, I can go there any time, and my way to university is near there. And there ARE a lot of small shops to buy "stolen souvenirs of Petersburg". Well, not stolen, but it is so easy for me to imagine. And you can't see "piers" from there, but "palaces above and alleyways bellow" are not far from there. I try to say that they act extremely good, they dived into their characters and they play wonderfully. That's why it's easy to remember everything I know and everything I was born and grown up in. Emotional of the character's traumatic situations plus the understanding and the feeling of the whole historical and the cultural things from my side just did it. I felt them as Russians. Hope I answered and it was clear 😅 I tried my best
@Biancaleigh6932 жыл бұрын
@@bethy_cuter my family are Russian immigrants in Australia and I also feel that kinship. It's the actions, mannerisms, dances, and how they talk about Russia that really feels like it. Every time I see lily and her solo Russian of yesterday. All I could see was my fathers family. They talk, look and sound the same (excluding accents of course). Especially the scenes with the dancing. I haven't seen my relatives traditionally dancing but I feel it in my damn bones when I see it. And they did and do dance like that I was just too young to go to the parties they had and now I'm old enough I just don't go because I live out of town. They go to the Russian club where they live often. But I onow they did dance. It's also weird hearing lily because I have a relative whose name is the Russian equivalent, Lilia. My brothers middle name is also Nikolai (I onow Nikolaievna is a patronymic). I just give respect for the huge attempts of incorporating Russian culture into this play. I'll say again. The most pure Russianesque song is Russia of Yesterday. (Rumour in saint petersberg though good now makes me feel sad since I also had relatives who would have been known of by living relatives who were shot by the soviets or arrested and killed on Stalin's orders.)
