Jens Stoltenberg's contract has been extended numerous times and he has been NATO Secretary General for almost a decade. Now he's expected to pass the baton to his successor at an upcoming summit in Washington DC to mark NATO's 75th anniversary.
But the next Secretary General must first secure unanimous support within the alliance.

Why are there so many comments about wanting someone with a ''militairy background'' as Secretary General? Yes that person is gonna be the face of a milirairy alliance, but the job has barely anything to do with militairy decision making. The Secretary general is the chair of major committees and the international spokesperson, a job much more resembling (and suitted for) an ex-Prime Minister/experienced diplomat, than a high ranking General/Admiral or Minister of Defence.

@MrSandman96 btw that "Military Chief" you mention, a.k.a. chair of the NATO Military Committee, is also Dutch (admiral Bauer) for the moment, but his term of three years is almost up, so I don't think we will end up with two Dutchmen at the head of NATO. I am Dutch myself, but I would not advice to go totally Dutch for NATO ;) We need fair representation of all member states. If you go down one step in the military hierarchy you get the Supreme Allied Commander Europe. This position has always been held by a US miitary officer. You might have been thinking of that guy (general Cavoli).

A country's defence spending doesn't make its national a better leader, besides Estonia may spend relatively more of its GDP than the Netherlands, but does it spend in absolute terms more than the Netherlands? I don't think so, I found that the Netherlands spent 19 time more than Estonia in 2021!

I respect Jens Stoltenberg's skills and intellect. While he rightly deserves credit for his successes, he must also own his failures too. Every American President since President Eisenhower, especially President Trump, criticized NATO countries's consistent failure to fund their own national defense by at least 2% of GDP. In 2014, all NATO countries recommitted to this minimum 2% GDP defense spending and yet only 11 of the then 31 NATO countries fulfilled this commitment.

@@506thparatrooper He can't force any countries to meet the threshold of 2% of GDP for defence. He can only try to persuade. A lot of countries have many domestic economic problems and the leaders of those countries have to make sure they are re-elected first, their population being more concerned with their own immediate personal needs rather than the future security or defence needs.

Most likely, she was given the important slot at NATO based on her sex which she intends on getting more women positions in slots based primarily on their sex instead of being the best qualified for the job. Liberal and progressive activists never learn from the destruction decades of affirmative action hiring has caused to the people the classes of people they promote as well as the institutions and companies enduring such foolishness.

@@EuropeanOnion Erm, what? Have you ever heard of absolut spending? It makes total sense to limit smaller countries like the Baltic states to about 2% because expecting them to spend tens of billions on defense would be insane. But insisting that countries like Germany or France who are already the biggest European contributors after the UK, with Germany spending twice as much as Italy in 4th place, should increse their defense budget to meet an arbitrary goal is equally insane. Especially when they are treated as if they didn't contribute anything. If Germany would actually spend 2% of its GDP that would be a quarter of what ALL Eurpean NATO members pay together.
@EuropeanOnion
@EuropeanOnion 4 ай бұрын
@@trnogger yes. I have heard of absolute spending. But like you explain yourself (you contradict yourself there I think): It makes no sense to compare a Baltic euro to a German of French euro. Richer countries pay more for our mutual defence. Mind you: Putin isn’t afraid of the Dutch armed forces or the Baltic armed forces. He is afraid of the combined German, French and Brittish armed forces. That is why they came up with that 2%. As arbitrary as it may seem. 2% is what the founders back then agreed upon as a minimal standard that everybody could agree on. That percentage makes it easier to compare countries. Now, I totally agree that what counts towards that 2% is arbitrary. That would be a worthwhile discussion. Pensions for retired army personel should be deducted and even VAT should be deducted. Or give NATO (or for those in the EU the European Comission) a discission what the European defence force should look like. Have countries pay for that defence force through their EU-contributions as a form of burden sharing. But European national governments are not for that step yet. Until that time 2% remains a good measuring stick.

@@EuropeanOnion Yeah, no. This is exactly the problem with the 2%-"rule", people like you not knowing where that even came from. First, there never was such a rule "by the founders". When NATO was founded, it was shortly after WW2 and the European nations were still getting used to the idea of letting Germany have an army at all and France was still on the fence of being a part of it. During the cold war, Germany spent 2,5 to 5% of its GDP on military, but after the Cold War ended, many European countries reduced their armed forces as the threat had reduced, only the US drove up its spending to move into the power vaccum that the fall of the Soviet Union had left - that wasn't even about defense. When Russia and China became competitors to the US again, the US suddenly started complaining that they were spending so much money while Europe did not and under pressure from the US, the 2% were set as a long-term ambition, that was only about a decade ago. But the European economy, especially for Germany and France, grew much faster since then than anticipated, and while both countries spend more than was the goal back then, they are still below the 2% line because the GDP grew so fast. In actual numbers, Germany has more than doubled its military spending over the last 20 years. But insteead of everybody admitting that the 2% were only arbitrary and that economic conditions have changed, under Trump the US started another bout about "the US is paying for European defense" (actually, the US spends only a tiny fraction of their military budget on European defense) and so the 2%-ambition was sold as a 2% commitment. That is the real story. It's all just Americasn populism.

@@trnogger I knew most of what you wrote but yes. You are right and I was wrong. The 2% was not agreed upon by the founding countries but was agreed upon in 2006 (according to the NATO website). Nevertheless if you want to compare efforts that countries make you will have to agree upon a standard. And that is why they agreed upon that 2%. That is what you wrote. That is what I wrote. 2% of GDP means that richer countries with higher GDP pay more. The German defence budget has more than doubled but that doesn’t mean much if the budget was - for historical reasons - to low to begin with. Now you can argue about the 2%. Define what counts towards it. But I still have not heard a case for absolute spending when it comes to comparing countries.

As a Dutchman, I will lose all my faith in Nato when he gets the job. This man was involved is so many political scandals, broken promises and other bad things. If the baltics get attacked Rutte will probably have "no active memories" of having promised to defend them and will probably make a deal with Putin even though that's the exact opposite of what he promised when he needed support for the job. Resulting screwing the baltics or even worse. He also prioritizes personal opinions over what's better for everyone. So if he dislikes someome but them working together can result is something that makes the world better, he would chose to not work on in.
