Their harmonies are 10x more jaw dropping on their other live duet "How to be me". I really really hope that Chinchilla is another rabbithole that you will go down. Songs from her solo catelogue that I can't recommend enough include "Fingers (live for hunger tv)," Elements," "cold water," "Little girl gone" (both the official music video and the acoustic version [it's a great anthem]), "cut you off," "MF Diamonds". Ren refers to Chinchilla as a "musical sibling". Again, if you find Ren's music up to this point to be "heavy", try the.light side of Ren.on songs such as "what you want," "Losing it," "Back on '74/Message in a bottle," "humble" etc. Cheers. If someone showed me this track and said it was some of the best of Ren, I would not have drowned myself in his music, which I have. My intro to Ren was this one, Chalk outlines, and it really hit me hard on too many levels, so I got curious. Went on to Hi Ren and the rest is history 😅

Chinchilla is a UK artist and a rising star on the British music scene. Ren refers to her as his musical sibling. She was a supporting act on Sting's 2019 European Arena tour and the opening act for the 2021 McFly tour. Chinchilla has also played some big European music festivals. Chinchilla recently split from her management team and is now a fully independent artist. Her songs "Cold Water" and "Shadows [Tails]" are beautiful, “FINGERS Live for HungerTV” are amazing, but her entire catalog is worth listening to. Her release, “Little Girl Gone” is one of her newer songs and she has a lyric video, an official music video, and a live version, “Little Girl Gone Live (Requiem),” which is my favorite rendition of the three. Chinchilla’s release, “Cut You Off,” is another great performance, as is her newest release, “MF Diamond.”

I think you've found the perfect ratio of reaction and commentary. Some people stop the video every 10 seconds and talk, some people just let the video play through and add nothing substantive to the video. You let the songs breathe for a while before stopping to add some succinct comments and then get right back into the reaction, then you do the bulk of your commentary after the song ends. Im glad Rens music led me to your channel. As someone who is currently stuck in a vicious cycle of the healthcare system and dealt with health issues all my life I relate to a lot of the things you say. The best musical “siblings”. Ren has called her his sister from another mister and a female version of himself due to their similar approach to music. For me I think it shows in the fact that they both have that something special that draws you in and demands attention. To see it fully for Chinchilla, check out her live version of Fingers. This song always reminds that one of the (many) things that makes Ren so great is his ability to know exactly when to be complex, keep it simple, or even use silence to get his message across. He isn’t flexing his guitar skills in this, just playing exactly what is needed with that beautiful guitar tone. And my favourite line in this is so simple, totally devoid of all the clever metaphors that he is so good at using, but it hits soooo hard: “I’m scared of being okay cause all things change”. I think anyone who has been through any struggles can relate to that feeling of not trusting that anything good will last. You can’t just enjoy it because you’re busy worrying about how long it will last and the feeling that will come when it’s gone. And then good days just make the darkness feel so much worse because you remember the light that’s gone… Ren is so special. He keeps being so relatable that it reminds us that we’re not alone. And we will always make room for more RENegades down the Ren rabbit hole cause we all need his light in the darkness 🐰🕳️ If you want more emotional singing from Ren, please check out one of my personal favourites: Crutch feat. Bibi. It’s an older song from before he was finally correctly diagnosed with Lyme disease and was written after a breakdown following multiple emergency trips to the hospital. You're not even at the tip of the Ren iceberg, you've just seen it behind the Pink Floyd mountains. 😉 Chinchilla is a whole other rabbit hole, not as big a catalog as Ren, but growing. Ren and she call themselves 'musical siblings' even if their individual works hit different themes. You can see them collaborate again on 'How To Be Me' the live version and busking together in Brighton. Even though she has done more festival and concert venues than Ren, she opened for Sting for 6 European concerts, she was very nervous to go busking with him in Brighton, but once they got into it, she loved it. They were seen again in Brighton and word is they are working on new collaborations. Both has management they didn't like and went fully independent, now both just happen to be under the same management group. So Ren does a lot of really cool things in his music. I don't know if he planned it or not but I notice on the clean chords in the verses, he plays only the shell of it. The root and the 5th of the note. What he doesn't play is the 3rd. The 3rd is what determines whether it is major or minor, happy or sad. Chalk outlines are a metaphor for the shell of the self that is left by taking the meds. It would be a heck of a device to use to illustrate the numbness I've heard described. But I'm not a pro musician, so I may be wrong, of course.

Thank you for your genuine heartfelt reaction. "Chalk Outlines" touches me deeply no matter how many times I watch this video or hear this song. Ren has been able to express through his songs what I have been unsuccessfully trying to communicate to others regarding my mental, emotional, and physical struggles. The studio version is also incredible. However, in my personal opinion, it does not come close to the live version. This performance is so much more raw, emotional, and visceral, and Chinchilla's performance here elevates the song to a whole new plain. I wish the live version would be available on Spotify. Someone (Obj Owl @JoesTheBestInTheWorl) shared his interpretation, I think fittingly so, “The sound of the folding chair opening up fills the empty space with echoes emanating from the walls and then diminishes. Ren uses this to compose the song, with Chalk Outlines representing the empty space that he feels within. Chinchilla, who also emerges from the walls and echos Ren throughout and suitably for an echo, has the last word, leaving a dark empty space. It's dark on the gallows.” Given Ren's medical history, I interpret this song to address mental illness diagnoses, and prescription psychotropics, which leave you emotionally dead (hence, the chalk outlines around your dead self). Even on a relatively good day when you might not want to take your pills, you take them "just in case," and you never truly enjoy "being ok because all things change," i.e., your well-being is usually short-lived and followed by another bout with depression. In her opening line, Chinchilla even mentions the antidepressant (SSRI) "Sertraline" and references serotonin. I can attest to the reality of this; for over 15 years, I was prescribed a cocktail of max doses of psychotropics, including Sertraline, until I decided to carefully wean myself off all medications in 2014. The side effects of the drugs were too many and too severe; they left me an emotional zombie, while the benefits were negligible. I lost all capacity to feel love, compassion, or empathy while feelings of anger, and rage remained and were potentiated and frequently dominated my psyche. I am still struggling daily but I rather feel pain than nothing at all. I would recommend you also check out Ren's other collaboration with Chinchilla, the "How to Be Me" live version, as well as their busking sessions in Brighton, performing “Sexual Healing” (Marvin Gaye cover) and “One Dance / Drunk in love” (Drake/Beyoncé cover). The latter two are of a much more joyful nature. As for "Chalk Outlines," it is one of my favorite songs right now; it is beautiful yet sad. Looking forward to more Ren reactions from you. We do feel as if we are in a chalk outline when on medication, but even not on meds we are not being our true selves, living our lives as we would like without the pressures of modern society.
