I just discovered your website and am hugely impressed. I'm a 78 yo woman who recently came through a journey where they cured my lymphoma but destroyed my body with the chemicals. I'm desperately trying to discover how to heal myself. I'm convinced my first line to approach is diet, but it took awhile to realize that my drs. are hindering. I've turned to online reading of current research and reviews but find so many opinions there too. I Keep switching things to do but it's driving me crazy. Looking for someone to trust and I think I just found the path. Thank you sooo much for sharing your expertise and common sense and support. Subscribed!

Thank you, I have mild kidney Dz from childhood secondary to renal reflex, corrected by surgery. My nephrologist does not give me ways to improve my renal function, and decrease protein dumping. He sees me as healthy in comparison to his other patients. So glad you are doing this, I like prevention!

When I went vegan, my eGFR went up from 52 to 67. I was almost jumping up and down with joy in the doctor's office! My LDL cholesterol had dropped from 134 to 102. I was so happy that I wasn't listening to my doctor who was trying to tell me they had found blood in my stool and wanted me to get a colonoscopy. Well, I had that procedure and everything was okay. Back to the eGFR. I read at some health webpage that eGFR always jumps when someone goes vegan or vegetarian because blood creatinine drops. But, after having watched my eGFR drift lower and lower for such a long time, it still was a thrill to see it jump. Yes, I don't drink alcohol, don't smoke, get plenty of sleep, and exercise. The only disappointment is that my high blood pressure, for which I am taking daily 5 mg of amlodipine, isn't showing any improvement. It's staying at about 140/82. I was hoping going completely plant-based would get me off the amlodipine.

Dr Hashmi, since you talked about your pets, I wish to share my cat story! Four weeks ago my cat was treated by the vet for urinary tract infection. The vet found granular sediments in the urine, the ultrasound & x-ray showed no stones. The antibiotic had no effect after two weeks. When I took my kitty back there was blood in her urine. The vet gave IV fluids for dehydration. The cat would not eat the urinary canned food. I decided to use a syringe to give my cat diluted apple cider vinegar 3x a day. 4 days on this my kitty is well & happy, & I have a huge vet bill!

With doctors, they do not spend over 30 minutes with each patient, but most likely ten or fifteen minutes and depend on testing etc. to make up for the difference. Can not figure if AI will help in the future. This is a great video. Today you must be your own doctor and channels like these are most helpful to supplement the lack of time doctors spend with you. The diet aspect of the show is great and do not dismiss supplements. Coffee is my bacon in this argument. It seems many of us have our likes we just do not want to give up.

I'm on Vegan-Keto and the diet has helped me a lot. I find it easy to stay on. Hidden ingredients in some vegan processed foods like potato starch was no good for me. I also found problems with some non-organic vegetables. I used to eat a lot of Brussel sprouts and I could not find organic Brussel sprouts, but found out through KZbin that non-organic Brussel Sprouts can contain harmful pesticides that includes arsenic that is bad for kidneys. Thanks to KZbin websites like yours, one can figure things out to help one's healing process.

I am going to recommend your excellent channel to my nephrologist and peritoneal dialysis team. Any recommendations for resistant hypertension? Non-diabetic, non-obese. Had acute kidney failure/sepsis 20 years ago due to one standard dose of physician-prescribed ibuprofen interaction with lisinopril. No drugs or combinations thereof have had any positive effect on my BP. I appreciate the plant-based approach, but I avoid soy because it is all GMO and mostly grown with pesticides. Love your explanation of hepatorenal syndrome. I am so glad I stopped drinking - wish I had never taken my first drink.

2 questions: 1. Is there an already created list of foods that are low phosphorous, low potassium and low acid? I don’t want to create my own list if someone has already done it. 2. Are ACE and ARBs still considered kidney protective? Or is that old school thought? And are those BP meds just beneficial for people who spill protein in their urine?

Thanks for all the great info. I was surprised to hear Dr H refer to alcohol as "empty calories". In fact, ethanol gets metabolized almost exactly the same as fructose. Fructose has been referred to as "alcohol without the buzz" because it's not taken up by the brain where is alcohol is but otherwise almost identical. Fructose and alcohol both get metabolized down to uric acid. Uric acid raises blood pressure by inhibiting endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) which is the body's vasodilator. Uric acid also acts at the level of the kidneys by inhibiting excretion of salt causing sodium retention further increasing blood pressure. Fructose is the number one cause of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, even among people of normal weight. So not really "empty calories", much worse than that! Please keep up the great work, folks! Richard Norris MD, ACLM

@@PlantBasedKidneyHealth I understand. My main concern was that the concept of empty calories just makes it sound like a neutral benign substance which clearly is not. That's all. You are advocating whole grain diet but I have been told that whole grains are much more difficult for kidneys to digest than refined so kidney patients should limit them? This is so informative, thank you. I discovered by accident my GFR was at 486 when clearing out some old medical documents three years after the bloods were done. I contacted my GP who said 'it's not a problem'. I insisted on checking if there had been further decline. The test came back at 488 a small improvement. I then looked into kidney health and found that a plant based diet was a positive change and as it happened I'd switched to a vegetarian diet two years prior to the second test. I'm now cooking mostly vegan fresh recipes and have very recently introduced regular cardio. I also noted that my sugar HBA1C is at the high end of normal. I find it shocking that a GP wouldn't point these things out, it won't take long to tip over that edge. I didn't realise the link between sugar and kidney health. I'll now set about reducing my carbs. My base line diet is pretty good, but I eat naughty extras that will probably make all the difference. I just checked and my biscuits have 3.5g of sugar in each one! And I don't stop at one! Thanks for this. We are all responsible for our own health but we don't always know how to fix things or the association between one thing and another. It seems diabetes is responsible for so many problems, best to never get there by the sounds of it. Thank you again.

Yes the doctors don't tell us all that we need to know to even help ourselves. Some don't know how to properly read lab results I found out from my Holistic friend. Those that do just minimize certain results that can lead to bad health or worsening health. I think some and in my area most are stuck on making monies through the pharmaceutical companies so they want to give u a bunch of meds of which they get "Kick backs" when they subscribe us these meds. If they heal us then we don't come back to them and they don't get monies from our insurances that hp them pay for their beautiful homes, cars, clothes and college tuition for their children!! Yes many are just that greedy for monies that they will jeopardize our well being!! Educational videos such as these on You Tube are so much needed to open our eyes to helping ourselves even a little bit. Even being educated just a bit more about our bodies and how they function can make such a difference and keep us out of the doctor's offices on a minimum. And mostly feeling better if not perfect!

IF FROM A CDN MAKE SURE IT'S PLAIN PUREED PUMPKIN,NOT FLAVORED OR SEASONED. I'M THINKING U CAN SEASON IT AS U MAKE SOUP OR OTHER PREPARATION IN ORDER TO EAT IT. Soup, pie, soufle' or eat it as is . If fresh perhaps saute' onions and add pumpkin. Lay over cooked rice with any meat on the side

He needs minerals, electrolytes, from raw fruits & vegetables. Without enough electrolytes the water goes straight through & is not getting into the cells. If not having unrefined salt, try to find fruits & veg that contains a little sodium, because along with potassium, it is very important for cell balance.

lack of minerals, he needs quality herbs or certain fruits. Cucumbers are good for the kidney so are apples, cabbage, leafy greens, diet should be more plant dominant, fiber proctects the kidney.

Excessive thirst can be a result of low electrolytes as advised, but being thirsty is also a major symptom of mis managed diabetes flaring up! This is the fastest way to destroy your kidneys is high blood sugar. Focus on fixing diabetes before managing kidneys too much.... Basically eat less carbs and exercise for 5-20 minutes after eating and smaller portions.

questions:I had a doctor years ago who had me taking Ashwaghanda to lower my C-reactive protein but my current doctor absolutely disagrees. I believe it was helping. What do you think? Can tea be causing problems for my kidneys? I was drinking tea pretty much all the time, various kinds. Lots of green tea, some with probiotics or elderberry, black tea with L-theanine and caffiene for mental clarity. I don't sleep without some L-theanine now and then. Rooibos most days. and lemongrass which I grow myself. I use a lot of lemon with my tea and plant based sweetners- preferred Monk fruit until I heard about a new study claiming erythritol might actually be dangerous. I need to find more info on that. And last, how bad is chocolate, cocoa, or Lily's brand dark chocolate. Thanks! I'll be back.

I have chronic but stable kidney disease and have had GFRs in the mid fifties with high creatine levels. Recently these started to deteriorate. With a few tweaks I improved these. Although I still eat animal food, I put the emphasis more on plant protein and added baking soda in water !x per day. After three weeks of this I improved my GFR to 61 and lowered my creatinine to 125

I've watched many of these episodes and it makes great sense, however never has the issue of lectins causing inflammation been addressed which must be part of the discussion of plant based diets. How do we assess what is worst inflammtion source, meat, lectins others etc? I know individuals will have a unique response but surely all issues must be on the table for consideration when making life changing nutrition decisions. I think an episode on this would be very useful!

I had a phone conversation with my GP today. I told him I have had an urine test, about 2 months. I was told by his colleague that I had protein in the test. No blood, no stones. I asked him to look at the results to tell me about creatinine, GFR and albumin. The Gp replied that could not find data on the computer. I mentioned the symptoms I was having and that I wanted a test to check my kidneys. How to increase or decrease kidney function. He went on to say that He wanted to order an urine test. I replied that I did not want another. When I mentioned what you said in this episode, He absolutely dismiss it as nonsense. I have to mention that on the previous test, did also a faecal one. Results allegedly came clear. I was prescribed tablets for prostate. There was very little improvement in taking the tablets. What has really worked was taking ashwagandha. I was able to sleep better and stopped waking up every 2 hours to go to the toilet. I feel more energetic, with less inflammation. As I got very little response from the GP, I phoned the diabetic nurse and ordered a full blood test. I have been trying a low-carb diet. After 10 years type 1, some promising results. I have a masticator and a food processor to puree the food, as I have a denture but am unable to chew the food properly. I take vitamins and minerals to compensate for the lack of proper absorption. I drink during the day but by early evening I have to stop. My body will retain very little liquid and forces me most nights to wake up every 2 hours. In my mind, This GP is a waste of space!. Thanks to the information you provide in these videos, I understand now that my condition was caused by high levels of stress and the wrong diet. I live in the hope that one day this man will be replaced by a more understanding and caring human being. Thank you for the explanatory videos. Great work!.

About a year ago I replaced the salt shaker with a turmeric and black pepper shaker never looked back. Also instead of coffee (caffeine made me feel worse) I drink warm water with honey and sprinkle a little cayenne, with a couple of lemon drops. The cayenne wakes me up just like caffeine would)

Doctor I went for a urine test recently. Protein in urine is negative. Does that mean protein is not leaking in urine or it is undetectable. Moreover, after 3 litres of water daily intake the foam in the urine is getting reduced but presence is more if my water intake is less. Do i have to worry about proteinurea?
