I built the exact same kit, however I used a Samsung 2000w 48v battery. You’d be surprised what the controller can actually handle, only problem I had was overheating of the yellow Chinese 10mm connector blocks, I replaced this with 30a uk connector block row, I also replaced the 40a Chinese fuse with a car audio 30a (straight from battery) used a garden waterproof box. To house the connections. Used waygo for smaller wires for easy removal. No overheating whatsoever! This bike is amazing! Gets speeds of up to 60mph. The torque is incredible. I’m 12 stone and it flys up even steep hills, off road the lot ….Don’t add pedal assistance, just leave disconnected !!! Or you will go through controllers allot. This video also notes something important, My bike is a cheap aluminium frame. Since watching I took mine apart and discovered the ebike hub is warping the frame significantly, So as in video I recommend a real strong frame. I got round my problem with x2 tourque arms and I reinforced the frame. I’ve done nearly 4900 miles so far in 18 months. All on power mostly as I’m lazy. Use good tyres and get a good battery @2000w the difference is incredible. I lve tried really expensive ebikes. This is by far the best thing ever! Costs only a fraction of the price. Just watch this video over and over until your all set. Remember pedal assistant and brakes (that come with kit) ruins the controllers! I wear the battery in a backpack or on a rear holder if I’m even lazier! My frame was literally about to pop so massive Thanks to this channel for probably saving my hub!!!!

Nice to see a real world build from someone else without the right tools for the job, like tyre levers etc. But a bike stand does help a lot. My first two builds were with a 750w Bafang crank motor which turned out great but I'm going to do one of these for my next one. Thanks

I built a motor bicycle with v brakes and very good pads and would have to change them out about three times a year. The bike went 45mph cruising, 55 with a downhill. Blew up the engine after two years. Anyway, the brakes were okay and better than cheap disks but nowhere near the power of good hydraulic quad piston disks.

Here's an update on my ebike. The front disc brake is shot. The hub motor is great. The rear tire popped a couple times but I think I had old inner tubes. The worst part is the controller is shot. I bought a new one but it's not quite compatible. I'm considering making it work, but I'm not sure it will support my pedal assist. I might skip it and buy a new set, including the display that had already gone bad. I'm still quite happy with my decision to build this e-bike. I've had a blast riding it this summer.

I had a very similar issue. I bought a 60 amp controller from amazon for £35.Most will do fine, though look out for the super cheap ones, they aren't 60 A and the draw from your hub will blow the mosfets. I also discovered you don't need the display if you don't use the cadence sensor, which is piss poor anyway. Just a good quality throttle so you can match your cadence and cruise. I've got a 1500w hub on my off road bike with the same rim & 2.8 inch tyres & very good 4 piston disk brakes which are needed for the speed & weight (the battery and wheel on mine weigh 12 kg). The hubs are very reliable,5 years 0 issues. The controller should be of good quality & 30-40 amps at least for this power of wheel. Disk brakes are a must.

Hello Russ: Thank you for this interesting video. Isn't the rim MTX39 supposed to be for disc brakes only? How did you manage with V-rim-brakes? Did you not put any rim tape? Do the black controller bag with straps and the black rear rack come with the 29" wheel? Is over 60 Volt out of the battery not too much for the 48 Volt motor? Why such a cheap bike from Walmart (around USD 130,-)? E-bike conversion kit costs 3 times more (around 400,-). Why not good quality from for example a famous US brand like GT from f. ex. Dick's?
@russsreviews4818
@russsreviews4818 4 жыл бұрын
Sarina, the kit didn't come with a disc brake, and the bike came with a V brake, so I used it. I took up-close pictures so you can see how it came together. It works pretty well, although I favor the front brake because it's disc and I want to preserve my V brake pads. drive.google.com/file/d/1GZpfJQCDz2gCiPJl2Hxh9bTbmoAd1LRV/view?usp=sharing drive.google.com/file/d/1GZuVwt0IAr9xk2BlPfI-2Csfjc-LCPyB/view?usp=sharing I didn't use rim tape because I didn't even know about it at the time, but if I did it again I probably would. The bag that holds the controller and wires came with the 29" wheel kit, but the battery bag and the rack coming off the seat post did not. I think the 60 volts might be too much for the controller, but not the motor. I started having problems with the bike randomly turning itself off, and I have to press the power button to turn it back on. I suspect that's the controller. I bought the cheap bike because it was a great bargain. It's aluminum alloy, but even if it was heavy, that's fine on an ebike.

What would you recommend? I am converting my full-suspension 2008 Gary Fisher Hifi Plus 29er into an affordable and clean looking all-terrain rear hub-motor ebike, but I am discovering several major challenges. The internal frame triangle is small and will only allow for a battery max height 3.25 inches. There is another water bottle attachment under the down tube but the battery will get more exposed to the elements. Below the tube also cannot allow for a tall battery. From what I read I would want a 1500w rear hub motor for ample off-road power, I live in a area with lots of hills so power is key. All the 1500w ones I see only allow for a 7-speed cog setup and my bike has 9-speen cog. Is this an issue? I have little to no room to mount a controller so I was exploring motors and batteries with built in controllers?? It also appears that off-road enthusiasts prefer a thumb throttle because a wrist throttle can be difficult to manage while hitting roots etc. This is becoming a real challenge to build. Are you aware of any conversion kits that would works for my bike out of the box?? Aiming for 35+ mph and over 25+ mile range. Need your help... Adam

To give yourself more room for a big battery, or at least the controller, you could consider one of these: www.target.com/p/schwinn-mounted-bike-rack/-/A-14900286 Also you can definately replace the twist throttle with a thumb throttle. I've seen those on AliExpress. You could probably even ask the vendor to swap it out if you see a kit you like but it comes with a twist. I'd ask a bike shop guy about whether the 7-speed cog would be an issue with your 9-speed shifter.

I bought this kit but the axle keeps coming out of the dropouts whilst riding and the manual isn't clear, do I put two washers on the inside of the axle or one? I have 135mm drop out
@FlyingFun.
@FlyingFun. 4 жыл бұрын
Usually a washer on inside and a torque arm on the outside is best, my 26 inch wheel from different supplier came with four washers 2 of which were torque washers with a bit sticking out. If your dropouts are aluminium you really should use a decent torque arm.

Will this kit work for a fat tire bike? Which battery did you go with?
@russsreviews4818

No, a fat tire would be too wide for this frame. I built my own 5S batteries, and I run the bike on 3 of them in series. You can see that process here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqWni4Njqqplo9E

@triggercmd
@triggercmd 4 жыл бұрын
It's been very reliable except the problem that annoys me but I still love it and don't regret the money and time spent on it. The problem that developed after a few months gave me two symptoms: 1, the screen stopped showing much data, like the speed is always zero, but it does still show me voltage which is very usefull. 2, it spontaneously turns itself off while I'm riding (usually coasting), and if I turn it back on while the throttle or pedal assist would be telling the motor to run, the motor basically stops, or seizes up until I let off the "gas" again. So I stop pedalling before turning it back on. I ride the bike often, and keep both sets of batteries full in case I want to ride a lot in a day. Ebikes are awesome. Either build or buy one..

The controller doesn't care about the ah. That's just the capacity of the battery. You might have a problem if your battery's voltage is too high, like 70 volts would be too much, but a 100ah 48v battery would be fine (but it would be large and heavy).

Yes, I still ride it all the time, but it has developed a couple of problems: 1. The display stopped showing the miles per hour, and a few other numbers. Fortunately it still shows the voltage. 2. Sometimes the bike turns off while I'm riding it. I have to turn it back on using the power button on the display. On the plus side, I just recently discovered if I crank it up to level 5 and give it full throttle, it goes super fast. I haven't confirmed it because the display stopped showing mph, but I think it's over 40 mph - it's a little scary. BTW, I saw your FPV drone videos. Very cool.
