I appreciate your honesty in warning people that these aren't a 1st or 2nd edf jet...maybe a 3rd. You have crazy piloting skills..especially what you fly & where you fly it! Obstacles all around you...alot of people dont have those kind of skills. So, good on you for warning them. Sweet planes...good job on the vids👍

Thanks Chris! I know for a fact that there's so many way better pilots out there, but I DID learn to fly in "tighter" quarters, and for me, it's kinda normal. Some guys think it's the same as flying with a wide opened flying field, but it's honestly NOT...there's good and bad that goes with it. Good, it FORCED us to stay close for filming. Bad, it's a lot harder to shoot landings on a FAST plane like this. This plane flies GREAT, but it needs time and a LONG shallow glide slope to get in at the right speed....this helps to keep the gear from getting bent, like I did ;) OR there's just more flying, and more practice and playing with CG to get it WAY back without making the plane fall over on it's side in a NASTY low level stall ;(

Hey Brian I can't thank you guys enough for these honest flights and repairs. Its helped me greatly. I know this comment is probably over a year late but I just started this amazing hobby back in April. I fly this beautiful bird at my local airfield and land on a grass runway and have had to replace that nosewheel axle myself. The nose gear axle thread is reverse threaded, if you turn clockwise to remove it they come out fairly easily plus HH sells them at a reasonable price too which is great.

@@BrianPhillipsRC I would disconnect then reconnect all connections used for audio in your setup (a couple times) to clean/re-seat the contact surfaces inside the plugs, especially if they don't get disconnected very often. Worth a shot, hope it helps! If problem persists, there could be a bad spot in a wire, the interference seems to be triggered when you are moving.

You are absolutely the very first person I have ever seen successfully change out a retract without purchasing parts exclusively from the company that made the jet! Great job
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tuna! I HATE buying parts, BUT on retracts, it's just the better option...when we run these "early" release flights, this sorta thing is almost bound to happen, since we CAN'T get them many times, this time included - LOL! I know this screw repair will probably bend too ;( BUT, if it bends the right way, I can just turn it 180 degrees, and get back at it, then when it breaks off, I'll just swap it out. I'd like to put a brass sleeve over the screw to thicken up the assembly a bit, but still allow it to come off if I'd have a real rough landing. Maybe SS would be better, since it'd be stiffer??? Not sure the best answer, but I know that a large part of my issue on that item was the short strip and short flying circuit, but this is what I LOVE. I love the simulated carrier landings!!! I'll be doing a couple flapperon videos soon, so keep an eye out to see how much better (or worse) she performs. You don't want to have to crash yours, so let me do it to mine for you - LOL!!!! Thanks for being here with us Tuna Flights!

I have this jet, it looks incredible, but it is the hardest plane I have ever tried to land and I have been flying for 25+ years, the wing loading is garbage and it comes down like a brick. @@BrianPhillipsRC It was such a pleasure to hear from you. Yes, I purchased the Apprenticed STS 1.5M from Horizon Hobby. I watched you put the flaps on your Apprentice STS 1.5M your friend gave you. I'm going to join the RC Club in Perry, GA. I live here in Warner Robins, GA. The President of the Club is going to teach me how to fly for free which is a blessing on the buddy system after I get some flying hours in on the RF9.5 Flight Simulator I bought from Horizon Hobby. I haven't opened the Apprentice yet, it is still in the box. I opened it to check it out to make sure it was OK when I received it. Wish I bought the Turbo Timber 1.5 BNF instead, since it had flaps. I'm going to see if Horizon will let me send it back. It's past their return policy. If not I'll try to sell the Apprentice and buy the Turbo Timber. Just don't have any experience in installing the flaps on Apprentice. If I did I would keep it. Thanks again for replying. Hunter, my grandson was thrilled to know you replied to my email. The Thunderbird is heavier, I believe...it's a bit bigger too, but more wing area too, if I'm correct in my guess... As for the grass, it's a work in progress, and it's a pain in the butt! I need to top dress this whole front yard area, but that's gonna take about 5 truckloads of good black dirt, and 2-3 truckloads of sand - LOL. We JUST got a grapple for our tractor on Friday, so we'll be clearing some downed trees in the near term, then I'll have access to a large 3 acre part of our property for delicious, near perfect soil!!! Can't wait to get it RIGHT, then I'll make a place to store our hay back there too. This will happen over the course of a few months, or all year, possibly longer, but I new I wouldn't be able to tolerate anything less than "in town" grass ;( - Everyone ELSE was right - LOL!

Awesome plane! I wonder though, can the missiles be swapped from the wingtip hardpoints to the pylons and vice-versa? I noticed that they have the AIM-120 (AMRAAM) on the wingtips and the AIM-9 (sidewinders) on pylon 2 and 8. That is a very uncommon loadout in real life because you usally position the lightest armaments on the far end of the wing. It's not a really big deal it just feels "off"

Hi Sir, did u land using the gyro? I am a no-gyro flyer fly many edfs including turbines. I found that the fms F16 80mm and also freewing F16 90mm are very hard to land perfectly. during low speed to land, it will move like a wave when we do the elevator input to flare even with high expo. Maybe need to setup the flaperon/taileron like RcGeeks did.

$'s to Smiles...tough. This is a plane that I stop and look at and admire every time I walk by it. Don't get me wrong...the 70mm passes the 10 foot test, but it's not one I admire sitting in the basement. Also, this F-16 is just a GREAT flying plane (still) and I LOVE landing it...even thought it's a tough experience. One of the harder to land planes I have, but it's easy to load the battery, and it flys amazing!

Hey Brian, the 70mm E-flite F-16 (The Thunderbirds) is pretty much my go-to plane, I fly it ALL the time, it flies like a glove and I'm more comfortable with it than any of my other jets. I've also gotten MUCH better at landing it because I have to fly out of my Dad's pasture and its a rough runway but I can set it down without breaking the gear every time now. My question is, since you've flown both, if I'm comfortable with that 70mm F-16 do you feel like it would be safe (pun intended) a to step up to this 80mm? How similar to you feel this 80mm is to the 70mm as far as its handling, landing speed, etc?
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 жыл бұрын
If you're flying from Grass, that's the real quesiton. If you can fly the 70mm, you can fly the 80mm, but can you LAND it? Grass would be a no go, unless you're on geotextile fabric or something like this.

Yeah, fear is a real thing ;) The F-18 is easier to land, if you have space. Flaps make a HUGE difference on the F-18, but the rollout and wonky but BEAUTIFUL landing gear makes for a complex situation if you have any yaw correction on the landings with either of these planes.

If you can stomach waiting on this, I'd suggest before you take the plunge on this or the 90mm Viper, you might instead consider the 70mm F-16 or 50/70mm Habu...I know it'll kill you taking the middle step, but need to keep in mind, these faster flying, and heavier landing jets (like this F-16) are pretty hard to land. They fly great, and with enough room and good conditions, are FINE for landing, but they just take more skill...skills that are strangely different than that earned from flying a prop driven plane.
