E36 M3 Project Gets Some Fresh AMSOIL 5W-40 Oil

I have no idea how long the oil has been in this car, but it doesn't look very good. I picked up some AMSOIL 5W-40 and a new OE BMW filter to get the car a little more drivable. I'm ready for all those fresh, new German horsepowers to flow through my fancy funnel! This is just the start of the process of sprucing up and improving this classic M3. @@crisl9518 I still remember at the dealer they had a new 325is with the soon to be released e36 M3 body kit installed from factory. Everything except for the M3 mirrors. This was about a year before the actual M3 hit the showroom floors. I believe those were named 325is M Sport or something like that, I forgot exactly . . . That particular model is very rare

I’m surprised you’re not filtering the new oil to some crazy clean iso standard like 12/10/8. That would be on a whole different level. Obviously motor oil doesn’t have to be that clean but don’t see anyone doing it and it’s common with hydraulic fluids.

"Project Farm" completed an extensive oil conparison/analysis between literally every brand of oil on the shelf. Bottom line, there isn't a bad brand of motor oil being sold. Even if the price difference is sometimes shocking all motor oils are only slightly better than one another. And I mean by a very, very small margin "better" than others. The Project Farm tests proved it. Over the years I've used Amsoil, Mobile 1 and Super Tech Full Syn. oils. For now, I'm sticking with Super Tech Full Syn. It's one of the the best full syn. oils for the money at any Walmart.

There are different levels of synthetic oil in case you weren’t aware. You stick with your blended synthetic while some of us prefer to use the actual best. I’ve ran Amsoil in -50° temps in Alaska without fail and have stuck with them for years. Send in a sample of 10k Super Tech and a 10k Amsoil and check the results afterwards. You’d be amazed.

My E30 tried to hit me in head for the last time. Just did mine. My OCD wanted the Factory one because it has 'E30' printed on it but I went with O.E. Manufacture for now.

I was using LM in my Audis and planned to order LM special tek for my RRS then did some reading and research and learned that LM sell all its oils as full synthetic in US while on their own LM Germany, only few say vollumesyntetish (or something like that), most of the oil say syntese processe, which means they are made with highly refined mineral Base 3 hydrockracking oil and not true synthetic base4 PAO and base5 Ester. They lie to American people using flaw in our rules of definitions while being honest with their own people, so no more LM simply for being dishonest.

I get to the same place you’re going but something tells me you’ll get there way easier. Too many blood sweat and tears, raw hands and broken fingernails doing it all myself. What you have there is an S54 oil filter, which is dimensionally identical to the S52 oil filter, but has that extra paper cylinder (as you noticed) which provides ever-so-slightly better filtration (leave it on). Most OEM BMW parts vendors just send everyone the S54 oil filter because why not? It is actually very hard to order the S52 filter. I managed to once, but it was of no benefit to me. :) For all intents and purposes, the S54 filter kit has superseded the S52 kit and should be used on all S52 and S54 motors.

Wrong Oil but OK, The correct bottle for your Car is the Black bottle. The red bottle is LL04 the S52 that I have as well takes LL01. contrary to popular belief they are not interchangeable and do not supersede one another. Common misconception. but your car your choice. I may not be an issue . Higher price doesnt always mean better product. In this case it may be a superior product however it does not qualify for the specs of the Car. I am a laboratory oil analyst, and do testing extensively.

Was going to just keep factory, but have decided to upgrade to suede instead. Gotta take off those toasty pillars and rear deck, and then you have to trust the upholstery guy to do it right... that damn sunroof cartridge has to come out.. feel like you’re going to mess and break more things than you fix. I get it from Amsoil website, also you can search for local dealers. Amsoil does not do big stores / national chains but rather small and not so small dealers - small business owners. If you drive a lot = change oil often and/or have multiple cars in household, you can get premium membership that gets you good discount. With my first order for Range Rover Sport and Audi TT, discount I got was about membership cost so not bad and I also have Audi Q5 to maintain - just ordered oil for that.

Acea c3 oils, such as amsoil european car formula 5w40 bmw-ll04, are reduced in additives to protect the particulate filters and that bmw m3 does not have a particulate filter.

Caution Matt, in case you replace your hood struts at some point, the new retaining clips don't always fully engage the clip grooves on the pins so when you go to close your hood, the strut may slip off and get crushed between your hood and fender. Devastating on a pristine e36 like this. Ask me how I know....

Amsoil and Motul are two oil brands that remain true 100% synthetic. Mobile1 and others are marketed as “full synthetic” which really only means they are 51% or more synthetic.

for bmw m3 for bmw without particulate filter (opf/gpf) you need bmw LL-01 its better amsoil signature series 0w40, amsoil european car formula 5w40 bmw LL-04 its for vehicles with particulate filter(opf/gpf)

@@ObsessedGarage That number is reversed, ie you don’t need a 5w or a 0w for Florida.But those motors run on anything just no lower than a 40 as vanos system runs off oil pressure. Amsoil is top tier, fwiw that exact motor oil reduced the famous e36 lifter tick on my s52. Nice series!

@@CornFed_3 I know, Matt is saying he went 5w40 not 10w40 because Florida. That thinking is reversed as Florida is a warmer climate. If it was a cooler climate then yes you’d go 5w over a 10w or heavier. Either way it’s an s52 it’ll run an dang near anything, long as it’s still thick enough to activate vanos.
