I’d like to share with you some information given to me about 30 years ago when I built a home. I wanted a fireplace and the company/rep that designed the home said to me do you realize that every cubic foot of air going up the chimney carrying the smoke out carries heat with it. The smoke going up the chimney got its air from inside your home. This is air that you have all ready heated. The air that goes through the coal stove and up the chimney is replaced by cold air from outside seeping in every crack and crevice it can find. So then you must heat that cold air that just leaked in to your residence. The answer to that is to have an outside source of combustion air. So the air from the outdoors only can find its way into your coal stove via a ductwork probably three or 4 inches in diameter at the most. This can be regulated just like opening the door on the bottom of your coal stove now. So the bottom line was with the house I had a fireplace they got it combustion air from the top of our unheated garage. No combustion air was needed to make the fire burn unless I opened the door to the fireplace. Think about it for a while it makes a lot of sense. Additionally in the US what you were putting in that coal stove looks to be like briquettes not actually pieces of coal. I realize that they most likely ground up the call to a fine powder and then compressed it to a briquette. I live in Pennsylvania, coal country in the US and trust me that is not coal in the traditional sense.
@tomcollier24445 жыл бұрын
Actually it will do no harm to allow the fire to draw air from the room which itself is supplied fresh air via an appropriate ventilation system. In fact, here in Britain such a system is a legal safety requirement which should be installed and maintained by an approved trades person. Messing around with home made ducting could not only prove fatal, it could also void your insurance in the event of a fire. Blocking off a correctly vented room in favour of a ducting system as described here which can be 'shut off!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!! I implore EVERYONE reading this. DO NOT INTERFERE WITH THE VENTILATION SYSTEM OF ANY HEATING APPLIANCE IN THE HOME, BOAT, CARAVAN ETC
@yt6505 жыл бұрын
tom collier . I don’t think you understand the principle of this. The coal fire now is getting its combustion air heated air mind you from inside the residence. The air going up the chimney from combustion is replaced in the residence by cold air being sucked in from the outdoors. If your coal fire were to get its combustion air from outdoors, the heated air inside won’t go up the chimney. There is no interference with the ventilation you may have in the residence. You are simply supplying air for combustion from outside not inside. If you re-read my post you will understand there in no way are you compromising anything. It is apparent to me that you have little or no knowledge about how combustion takes place and what happens to the exhaust gases in this case. You were acting like this is a non-vented heating system, when in fact it is vented up a chimney to the outdoors. If you check the pellet stove you will find that many of them come with an option where you can supply an outdoor source of combustion air.

It's a good idea however i think you burn more smokeless fuel than you need to anyway. Do your coal saver side pieces sit on the bottom wire of your coal cage?
@welldeckdiaries56105 жыл бұрын
If you mean the cast iron inserts that sit either side of the fire at 45 degrees to direct the coal, i have since removed them so the coal cage sits directly above the round riddle grate

We still use it apart from the coldest of nights when the temperature drops below freezing, but I know some who couldn't get on with it

Now then, love the channel. After watching this video I got myself a coal cage but seem to be having no luck. Any advice on the matter? Burn wood no bother, full bed of embers with layer or 2 of coals it all gets going nice and hot. Coalcage I feel like I'm missing a trick. Hoping you might have an idea? Cheers

@@letshaveago6077 Not sure what fire you have but all stoves differ in there operation, To get a good burn with coal you want your grate beneath the coals clear ash pan empty and a good air supply from beneath, so I wouldn't personally use the cage if there was a bed of wood embers. I assume your stove is a multi fuel stove and not a wood burning stove? The law of physics dictates that if you use less fuel you will inevitably get less heat, but set up correctly we have found that we are no longer having the fire so hot that we have to sit here with all the doors and windows open. We have only taken it out on 2 frosty nights so we could pile the coals up resulting in a hotter and longer burn over night

@@welldeckdiaries5610 Thanks for the reply. Yes it's a multi stove and in the past I rely on a good hot fire with wood and the add a layer of coal. The coal would the get glowing hot and burn really hot and long but as you say it get to hot. The hot embers are just there to get the coal hot and going. With a clear grate and good airflow I just havnt got it going right. It's a flaval arundal, maybe a need a bigger size? Thanks for getting back to me.

If it does save 1/2 bag of coal a week, then the Coalcage pays for itself in less than1 month. Even 1/4 bag of coal saved pays for itself in 2 months. Basically, it's a free device.

I think this may become another 'stove fan' con. Yes, I agree you'll use less coal but in doing so, I think the heat output will correspondingly less. So, burn less coal and be less comfortable?

Burn less coal and have a nice temperature instead of roasting alive
