He was avoiding the question (I get why) asked if it was an EA decision. We all know it was and anyone who thought this guy was going to come on and point the finger at them they are living in an alternate dimension. This is a business decision more and more large publishers are pushing because people are suckers. There are a shit ton of people ready willing and able to pay extra for loot boxes. Until those people decide not to buy them they will always exist. Its sad but its how it going to be.
@MADMAN17477 жыл бұрын
Remember Battlefield 4? How you could progress in each individual class? I'd play a class for a while and switch for whatever situation was needed on the map at the time. How hard is it to do that in Battlefront? I mean you could do that in the original Battlefront 2 and that had a progression system in it back in 2005 even tho it was very basic, remember the Award Assault Rifle etc? There is perfect working formulas from past games, what is being done nowadays is just ruining all AAA games and giving them shorter lives. People want freedom in games, they don't want to be forced to open multiple lootboxes to get an item they have seen on another player, they want to find out the way to get it and work for it.
@beeseebee_7 жыл бұрын
Tru.. But u gotta give them credit for answering critics, making some changes, and interacting. Most companies wouldn't. Here's a fact.. They want to make more money. They will design games to achieve this. At the end, we just don't want extreme pay to win

@Branded.Schnoz7 жыл бұрын
"Durr we want people to keep playing for a long time, so loot boxes." My guy. Do you know how fucking long people played games like Call of Duty 4, or Halo 3, games that didn't have any micro-transactions? To put things in perspective, *those communities are still around.* It's really quite simple -- make games that are GOOD, and people will play them for a long time. A game's quality should speak for itself, and it shouldn't need to have bullshit stuffed into it to artificially create longevity. Conversely, if a game is bad, it's bad. Releasing it in such a state and then saying, "don't worry Joe, we'll address some of those concerns POST-launch!" is ridiculous. If EA's that worried, maybe they should delay the game's release instead of putting out an inferior product in time for the fucking holiday season. Games like Persona 5 and Breath of the Wild were delayed multiple times to make sure the quality was there, AT RELEASE, and you know what? Those are damn near *perfect* games.
@DirEnGay7 жыл бұрын
Those games that you mentioned have paid DLC by the way. People still do play them, but then again people still play just about every game. The only difference is how many people quit before a DLC was released and didn't justify paying for it? In this game all future DLC is free so people who play casually or get bored can come back to the game when new free DLC is released. I basically do this right now on Overwatch. I get bored and quit for a month or two then a new map or character comes out and I come back. As for the lootboxes, they ain't an issue if you play the game you get them for free. People crying over them haven't figured out how easy they are to unlock without spending any real money...
@Branded.Schnoz7 жыл бұрын
Paid DLC, e.g. map packs that have nothing to do with player progression, are not at all the same thing as lootboxes. I'm not sure if you watched this video, or the rant that preceded it, but Joe broke it down pretty clearly: yes, you will _eventually_ unlock things for free in this game, but it will take you *hundreds* of hours to get it all. Why? So that you buy the lootboxes instead. I'm glad you've apparently "figured out" how to get around this problem in a game that hasn't actually been released yet, but I don't know what your point is here. The promise of free DLC in the future is empty, it means nothing. It's only happening because they've found a logical progression for their greed. Unlike new maps, these lootboxes are inherently tied to progression, they affect gameplay significantly. EA doesn't _need_ to charge for DLC anymore, see? This is a much, much better scam
@Bazonkaz7 жыл бұрын
DLC and lootboxes are two completely different things.

I hate lootboxes, let that be known now BUT don't forget, to get these better graphics, and other things require better technology, better technology requires lots of $$$ that is not including the time it takes to make to. so lootboxes help to better cover that cost because the cost to make games keeps going up yet they HAVE NOT increased the 60$ price tag over the years. BUT I hate the whole money=gameplay I think that it SHOULD BE PURELY COSMETIC like OW lootboxes, their system is good where duplicates give you currency to buy the things you want and etc. lootboxes that give weapons like Halo 5 req system, this, SoW their lootboxes are shitty and all around greed, lootboxes that are centered around emotes or PURELY cosmetic then they are fine

@sugar53747 жыл бұрын
Steel Dragon That's entirely wrong. They already earn enough to profit from sales alone. Not much but enough for anybody taking part in the project. With classic Microtransctions the Publishers in their business suits earn more. With Lootboxes that's a whole other story. The filthy businessmen get rich. Not the Developers. Most of them had their own engine and get forced to use a certain Engine from the Publisher. Right now the Development cost of anything game related is low, the lowest it ever was.

Witcher 3, Horizon, Monster Hunter World is how to go at it. 😉 But these companies go for maximum with minimum effort. 🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑 Thats what these companies go for i dont want to gamble for DLC the same goes for Overwatch yes i would pay a reasonable amount of cash for cosmetic skins.

I love Star Wars but these new Battlefront games are a total joke and a perfect embodiment of what's wrong with modern day gaming. Shiny beautifully polished products with amazing production values but no depth whatsoever, no soul, just an empty shell inflated by corporate greed. BDobbins called Destiny the Kim Kardashian of video games for a similar reason but at least Destiny had some genuinely good shooting mechanics, Battlefront doesn't even have that!

They listen after they get their money. The most spend on loot boxes and any type of micro-transaction happens at the start of the game from players who are already totally aware of the fact that spending = advantage. They stopped early enough that it makes you question your belief that EA are just in it for the money and get out, but late enough that they got the lion's-share of the money they would've got.

JapanskNinja Agree 100%. And if the F2P tries some sleezy tactic or makes the game an unbearable grind fest in order to coax people into paying for useless trash, guess what? I just stop playing. No harm no foul. I didn't pay a dime to get in. If your game is good however, and progression is satisfying? Sure. I'll kick you a few bucks for some worthy cosmetics or something of the sort. It's funny how it works out because in a F2P, they have to EARN these MT's. They have to get people hooked on their game. Which means they need to make a fun game. A satisfying game. In full retail games? They don't have to earn shit. People feel like they HAVE to enjoy the game because they paid for it. Which they can't, because the progression system is an absolute SHLOG. A tedious fucking chore. So they run to the marketplace and drop 50 bucks just to try to make it bearable. F2P model for the mafuckin win.

When I saw Joe was talking to a person from EA or DICE, doesn't matter, I paused the video immediately. There is no way I'm watching this shit. I know exactly how it's gonna play out and judging by the comments I'm right. If all of you knew how EA works in the background like I do EA would be destroyed and that is not an exaggeration. I can tell you some of it. In the background EA calculates how far they can go with this bullshit strategy and based on that they account for how many people will get pissed off and not buy the game. Those are the people EA sacrifice on purpose. Those people are not their focus. After that they account for how many people will stay and how many will likely be a "whaler", a piece of shit person who loves to "Pay to Win", spend money on their game. That's how they work. If too many people get pissed off they use their BACKUP PLAN! Noticed how quickly they went "Oh! We listened so we decreased the costs of heroes by 75%" but they also quietly decreased 75% on the amount of credits you earn in matches and campaign. Even put a limit on how much you can earn in the arcade mode. They also TEMPORARILY removed lootboxes to "fix" them. We all know it's not gonna be fixed. This shit needs to be illegal. Technically it already is because the game uses a form of gambling and the game is being advertised to children and the game encourages you to put money into this gambling machine. It is fucking illegal. There is currently an investigation to see if this shit really is a form of gamble, which it is and if it get classified as gamble it will be *BANNED* in the entire Europe. I hope this happens. It needs to happen for the gaming industry's sake.

So according to the dev the quicker the game ends the more games you can put in and get more credits. This isnt true because the longer you are in a game the more credits you get. Jackfrags tested it out. He beasted a game and got 200 credits. Next game he sat around and died a shit ton of times and got 300 credits because the game was longer

Gives players options? No. It limits players, it shouldn't be tied to progression. As soon as Joe asked why Loot boxes should be in the game, all I heard was stuttering and answers to questions except the one that was asked. People pick a particular path in games, why? Because they paid 60 fucking dollars for it, they can take whatever path they want - this whole Loot boxes help players keep playing is bullshit. Great gameplay, a great community and great, competent devs make a game replayable. Not fucking loot cards. The fact he dances around the P2W problems and the fact that loot boxes are entirely corporate. It's disgusting, you're targeting vulnerable people to gambling with their money or just relying on people who don't care paying, either way - take a look at yourselves in the mirror. Good on Joe for hammering home the questions about the micro-transactions whilst refusing to let them slide round - I wouldn't be surprised if the poor bastard he was interviewing had an EA lapdog pointing a gun at his head.

Yeah there are some very convenient talking points that enable them to dance around the issue and act like they’re helping. Sort of like what I see happening with Activision’s new system, they’ll be able to say they’re looking at individual’s data to better tailor the game to our style/skill level/etc., but in reality they’ll be using it to try to get us to spend more on MTs (E.g. actually have beginners play against advanced players with better guns so they want to go get those better guns).

I dont know, you have to remember that this is gaming so not as easy to gain real data on each persons thoughts on a game. Though I will say, it would not surprise me if a bigger portion of the player base does decide to play for a longer period than normal, because of how they set up the progression system. For example: Last of Us had an amazing multiplayer game mode, literally on pair with other games that solely have multiplayer without a single player, yet the population in there did not have as many as other games.

Deej from Bungie gets the same treatment. It's hard for these community managers, even though Paul isn't one, he's probably just the guy that drew the short straw, when the companies they work for make stupid decisions because most of the blame and hate will be thrown at the community managers.
@Nightmoore7 жыл бұрын
leonthesleepy No, aim it squarely into his face - especially in this specific interview. He’s representing the Dev team and EA. There’s no reason to pull any punches. This isn’t about hurting somebody’s feelings. It’s about refusing to let $60 games turn into some garbage mobile market filled with Clash of Clans business models. They need to hear that message loud and clear. If he’s going to shoulder the responsibility of interacting with the consumer, then he’s the guy that needs to hear it the loudest.
@worlddominashungaming98327 жыл бұрын
In this case I agree with you, Paul is in a position where he can actually do something with the feedback he gets. Most of the time though its the community managers who get stuck with the brunt of the hate because they are the 'public face of the game' so to speak.

@wuzuppe0ple7 жыл бұрын
If you are actually a dev, fucking do something! Every new mainstream game has loot boxes now, and when will it stop? When did content become something to dodge? Gamers complain about DLC completing and ruining games, "oh we have free DLC, just pay to win instead!", why does any of this exist at all? Because devs allow it to happen. Is it hard to ask for a full game without pay to win? Apparently yes! League of Legends is completely free to play and is the biggest game of this decade. Clearly Overwatch does well with that system even if I payed them for it, what is so wrong with making THAT the norm?

Even cosmetics can influence a person to start gambling, since a lot is about "looking cool" too in games. Loot boxes should just be rewards.
@koyutakota71377 жыл бұрын
StronkiTube i agree somewhat. If its purely cosmetic im fine with the loot box system as it dosnt effect gameplay. If anything they should keep the loot boxs for cosmetics but rng rewards after matches. The better you do the higher the chance to get somthing good. That way it also encourages players to do better for a better chance at better rewards not only that but they can also lock some rewards behind challenges. So you have something for those who want to look cool, somthing for those who just enjoy playing the game and somthing for those who strive to be the best.

It has the name Star Wars if it sucks or not it will sell, Star Wars is the most profitable franchise in the damn universe. They could make the single player 1 hour long and lunch with 2 maps and it would still sell like crazy. It’s sad because nobody puts effort in making a good Star Wars game anymore. Instead we have half ass games with loot boxes. Because sadly it works for them. And rehashed new movies.
@christwoodyhussar63367 жыл бұрын
The generic lack of creativity, coupled with the micro transactions, and further exacerbated by the growing sizes of American AAA titles, for the sake of pushing only graphics is a lose lose. Games cost more to make, and they don't make new engines like they used to so we get recycled garbage all the time especially in FPShooter, and they pass the losses to the customer, while giving us an inferior product. Fuck you EA!!!

Until we call this for what it is, gambling, then we can start to get people with power to regulate it. We cannot have gambling in games (essentially what every EA is all about now) that will be bought for and played by a huge majority of underage gamers. We need a gaming equivalent of Al Gore to keep these shady practices and bad ethics in check.

Ricky Loves You as much as I want that to be the case, I just don’t want the same people that think games influence people to be violent to be the ones that we are at the mercy of
@blackdahliagaming46967 жыл бұрын
Ricky Loves You see I agree and was just recently debating with some friends about the legality of these micro transactions for games. especially because kids play these games and a lot of their parents let them use their credit cards. really it's worse than gambling because while you technically win every time. Your winning a bunch of 1's and 0's where in real gambling there's a chance you can spend money and then win real money. On the other hand most of the games with these micro transactions are usually rated 18+ so really the only people who should be gambling (at least where I'm from in canada) are of legal age. (probably wrong on that as there are probably games rated E that have microtransaction as well I wouldn't doubt it) in the US its a different story but in both situations of course kids get their hands on these games because most parents buy them for their kids because they believe as I do, that there is no correlation between videogame violence and real world violence. I've played violent games since I was 6 or 7 years old used to watch my brother play resident evil and silent hill I used to play GTA all the time and even though I've been told I look very intimidating I'm actually scared of confrontation I'm so passive when I go to a restaurant and order food and they bring me the complete wrong order I just say thanks and eat it anyways cuz I don't wanna make a fuss. one of my biggest fears is if I ever got in a fight with someone and I ended up hurting them I would be racked with guilt. even though I spend hours running over pedestrians and shooting innocent civilians in GTA games. Tangent aside the reason games are allowed to put gambling into these games is partially because its not quite gambling (i think its worse in my opinion) but like i said earlier gambling you can lose everything and have nothing to show for it or you could double or triple your money where as these micro transactions you "win" everytime. The loot boxes could be equated to those suprised bags they used to sell in convenience stores (i think they still do sell them) your buying something that's 1.99 and you don't know what's in it, but there's a select variety of things in there for sure. maybe things you want, maybe things you don't so it's the same concept. As a kid I would buy one and it would have a bunch of lame stuff in it, but maybe the next one will be awesome, or the next two, or five, or twenty will have something good in it. It has the exact same endorphin response in your brain as gambling and is just as addictive but with loot boxes you are buying a product that might have something good in it which differentiates it from true gambling. but really, at least the way I see it you lose evertime as what you win is like I said, 1's and 0's and is basically worthless but that fact that along with age restrictions on a lot of these games and that what they're doing isnt technically gambling by legal standards. at the very least no parent should give their kids their credit card info that's just irresponsible parenting and these parents that get mad at companies and game developers about their kids racking up thousands of dollars on their credit cards have no one to blame but themselves for being so careless with their finances. Hell with the way parents are these days and the way banks are with lines of credit. If you have good credit you could end up with a 100,000 dollar line of credit and your kid could bankrupt you in a night since most of the games let you buy something like 1 crate for 1.99 or 20 crates for 35.99 but why not get 100 crates at the low cost of 149.99 some kid could click that button 10 times and boom there goes 1500 dollars in 30 minutes. 1500 dollars on virtual goods that are already worthless but are going to be absolutely useless in less than a year when all the servers are empty because the new battlefront or call of duty or whatever game comes out

Just excuses. They are trying to make money, and that makes sense. but this method of tricking people is messed up. It will work on some people, but the point is that it shouldn't be the core of a game. I don't want my full price, full feature game to be a pay to win, or pay to enjoy mobile type game. This is not why i'm a gamer. I will ignore this 100% as opposed to what, for example, Nintendo is doing. where they are killing the market with quality, not quantity. BIG, That's the thing in since 2005 the cost to develop a AAA game has gone up so much. As games get better looking and become more technologically advanced you need a bigger team and more money. I still hate it and wish it wasn't implemented but they want to make as much profit as possible so I understand the business decision.
@DIO-h2q7 жыл бұрын
This is why indie developers are the new "AAA". Back then they wouldn't stand a chance, now with some limitations, they can give MUCH MORE content than big budget AAA games. Since the development budget is lower, less people are working on them, maybe graphically it won't be impressive by indies, but talent, passion can make those games better and make the developers more lovable, because they sell their games cheaper and usually with a lot more long term support. AAA is about graphics, cut scenes. Secondary thing is gameplay. And the absolute primary is: making lots of money from it. I don't mind if the game doesn't look what it should in 2017 if the gameplay is amazing and fluid and skill based and doesn't try to get more money from you. I played Doom II multiplayer days ago. It was SO GOOD! It felt rewarding and great! And it looks like garbage compared to games nowadays. But it's perfect! Great stuff! And this is how indies do nowadays. Low budget, maybe won't be that impressive looking. But maybe they can compromise it with artistic talent and some unique artistic direction that looks appealing and the game doesn't really need voice acting and other things. And the end result is GREAT!
@Bigmonongo7 жыл бұрын

Jake Runyan I'll be honest, no, I wouldn't. I would value my artistic integrity more. And I don't believe some of these devs are too happy with these choices they are contractually obligated to make, either. This *is* a business, and businesses have bosses that you bend over backwards for. In this case, it's EA, and thus, they are the ones at fault here, not DICE. DICE has always treated their players fairly, lootboxes and malpractice is not what they are known for in the past. This new lootbox craze is being spear-headed by production heads in companies like EA, in their attempts to normalize it as a service, in order to make more money. The main people I feel bad for, (Besides the consumers being abused) are the devs of the games, whom not only have to make creative sacrifice on their projects due to contractual obligation, but whom also end up being the main source of criticism from the community (Since it's the only face gamers have to identify the issues with). EA is the one making the majority of the dough, and when their OWN forced malpractice starts to ruin a franchise, they simply flush it, instead of handing over complete creative control to the dev teams. This is what's troubling for DICE, the more intervention EA has in their games, the more consumers will get mad, which will then hurt their games, and by extension their company, until they go the way of Visceral Games.

Because loot boxes no matter what way you spin it is a form of gambling. Gambling is addicting. And addiction is easy to entice and manipulate once drawn in. That’s why people end up staying for the long haul. Collectors, completionists, people who just want the best items they can get, people who like or are trapped by gambling. It’s easy to reel them all in while keeping them there with the steady release of new and better loot. And no I’m not justifying it I’m simply pointing out the shady and messed up business practices.

It will all be gambled for on apps, which will also cost money. So you will need: Console/PC, display, net, electricity, game, phone which supports apps, company specific app and $50+ to get the game to run at an acceptable level. It sounds crazy now. YES, poor guy. Have you ever had an excellent job that you would prefer to keep ? probably not. Chances are EA or Dice sent out the young greenhorn millennial to back up their bullshit. doubt the kid wants to do it, he's walking a fine line here. basically getting fucked by his boss.

mcgman 80 Agree, I feel sorry for the guy. Nobody would feel comfortable in his position, gotta admit it takes guts to do this interview, even if his answers are completely scripted.

Andres Teare this guy probably feels the same way as us, knowing his piece of work is getting shit on/ruined because of people above him trying to squeeze money out of it

For people wanting joe to get aggressive and go off on the developer. Why the fuck would he do that in a situation like this? No developer or anyone from the gaming industry would want to have an interview or give him insight about games we are all treading to buy if he did that. Joe handled it very very well. Hope we get more like these.

Phantom Taiga couldent agree more especially on the more interviews
@cxouille47757 жыл бұрын
I agree. While we roll our eyes at the blatant BS that was being told to us by Paul, He volunteered to be interviewed by Joe. As someone whom has conducted interviews with others in creative entertainment fields I have learned the Last Thing YOU WANT TO DO is just chew them out. If you do that then nobody will agree to be interviewed by you and only go to those who praise them.

He did a professional job on behalf of the community. Obviously holding back. Also the facial expressions at times. You can see it all...
