Had my ACL surgery two weeks ago today. Injured my hamstring (Graft was harvested from the hamstring) day 9. Be CAREFUL! I felt great from the moment I woke up from anesthesia and I pushed myself too hard. Listen to everyone saying be careful and stay on those crutches no matter how pointless it feels. I was on track to get full ROM in two weeks, felt great walking on flat surfaces and both up and down stairs, but now I'm stuck on the couch most of the time just because of a stupid mistake. Lesson learned, I'm not superman.

A lot of physios don't really know what are they doing.... My physio obviously don't know nothing. Ride the bike and go home. I go to the gym daily and do my exercises. What a sham.
@sportsrehabexperts3 жыл бұрын
Not saying you are wrong. But it is up to you to also find a physio who is knowledgeable enough to provide you with worthwhile value. That can be local, or in todays age, it's very easy to work with someone online. Many physios are trained in dealing with age 65+ doing total knees and geriatrics. There is nothing wrong with that! I am not protecting the lazy physio who just doesn't give a shit and punches the clock. I am protecting the physio who works with a different population on the regular. Then all of a sudden gets a different type of client who shows up to that physio's doorstep thinking that all physio is the same. It's time for the public to start recognizing there is a wide range of clients that physios serve. Its worth your time to do research on WHO you are actually going to be treated by instead of grouping all physios into the same category. By no way am I attacking you directly (I have no idea of your circumstances). I am just making a blanket statement because it's also up to the consumer to do their own research before starting any type of treatment with any medical provider. Just as anyone in the public would look at product reviews before purchasing. The public should also look at reviews and do their own research on WHO it is that is actually treating them

And all this places I've been too they said that they work with my type of injuries... so once you start i can't keep switching physios all the time. I'm not a professional athlete that have a medical team behind them. I'm an active person who trying to live a good long Healthy life... And add to that the Health insurance don't cover much so ... at the end of day you gotta do your exercises by yourself and take enough time before going back to sports. It is what it is... but its the truth... if you don't treat the ACL , STEP BY STEP AND PHASE BY PHASE DON'T TAKE NEW PATIENT STICK WITH 65 YRS OLD ... I DIDN'T PUT ALL THE PHYSIOS IN THE SAME CATEGORY, BUT I SAID THE MOST OF THEM.

@@thedreamer5168 again, you are not wrong. It's a medical system and insurance system problem where the two do not align in the patients best interest. That's a topic for a whole different debate. Don't hate the players, hate the game. Find a physio location that has and USES a squat rack and dumbbells over 25# instead of a company that says they do "sports medicine". If there is no physio that will do this or has no idea how to coach a squat/lunge/etc, find a personal trainer that will. If that doesn't exist then find someone online.

Thanks for you video..Right knee ACL reconstruction (bone patella tendon bone) plus medial meniscus repair plus microfracture medial femoral condyle. I had the surgery in early June this year (15 weeks ago) and I still don´t have total knee extension and it is very difficult for me to bend more than 95 degrees. When I try to go more than 95 degrees flexion I feel a blockage/stiffness and I can´t bend further. Can you please give me some advice? I really appreciate it. Thank you
@sportsrehabexperts3 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, sorry about your current struggle. The microfracture is likely playing a role in the difficult of both bending and straightening the knee. Your expectations and timeline will be a bit different then what was described in the video due to the microfracture and even meniscus as well. What have you been doing up until this point?

@@sportsrehabexperts thank you so much for replying..in the first 10 weeks I did physiotherapy every day. @@Dsferradaz that's good you are doing physiotherapy 2x a week! Only thing is that the exercises prescribed in physio can vary significantly from clinician to clinician. So what exercises have you been doing to improve knee mobility and strength? The video made multiple suggestions for improving knee extension. I would start there

I did ACL reconstruction plus meniscus repair 5 month ago and know I need to do arthroscopic because I can't bend my knee more than 90 even after all the physio I did. Do you recommend doing physio every day after arthroscopic surgery? And per day wow many time should exercise? Thanks so much for your help and to share all your content? I'm a big fan of your channel
@sportsrehabexperts3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Daniel! Yes, you should be doing something every day after a meniscus or any arthoroscopic. The nitty gritty details are always going to be slightly different person to person. But in general the recommendations given above do work well daily or at a high frequency. If it's not going as expected, it's better to search out trusted sources sooner than later

This is one of the best videos about ACL recovery. Thank you! I am on my 7th week post acl surgery with hamstring harvest, I am super good with extension and bending but the hamstring is a killer! Its just too easy to force it and I frel a pop and very sharp pain (like tearing) when I force my hamstring a bit. Is that normal? How long will it take for my hamstring muscle to fully recover?

It takes awhile! Various different levels of this but in general 3 - 6 months for most strength based movements if doing all the right things.

I had meniscal repair as well. How does this change things?
@sportsrehabexperts2 ай бұрын
It doesn't really change anything. If anything it makes extension even more important! Flexion will take longer generally as well as weight bearing status could be delayed depending on how aggressive the surgeon.

Will definitely have more videos on exercises. But this is a VERY practical video for those dealing with early ACL rehabilitation. Essentially this is the first 20 min of education I give to any new client. We HAVE to emphasize knee extension PRIMARY and knee bend is secondary. Yes both are absolutely important but the time rush is on knee extension and not knee bend!

Also able to do static bike comfortably. And there was mo much bending while walking. How to get complete hyper extension??
@sportsrehabexperts2 ай бұрын
Continued work, don't sound far off! Possibly just upping the frequency and holding the contraction longer or using an ankle weight for resistance and continuing to progress other quad based exercises.

Everyone responds differently after surgery. Also you physical level going into the surgery makes a big difference too! This video still applies to your scenario. Regain full knee extension is first priority both active and passive. You should have someone local or online that you trust guide you through the process as it can be challenging day to day and always good to have someone in your corner! Don't let this become a long term unnecessary set back!

I messed up. I didn't go to physio before the surgery and walked on a stiff knee for 2 months from point of injury to surgery. Now I'm nearly 6 weeks post op and my leg is straight after a few minutes of prone hang but nowhere near hyperextension. Is it possible to get the hypertension back? My doc and physiotherapist said no. I have double bundle hamstring graft with synthetic jewel acl. Thanks for the video?
@sportsrehabexperts3 ай бұрын
You should be able to get it back to 0 degree, maybe 2degree hyper. Not sure how flexible your non affected leg is? But give it enough time and doing the right activities you can gain more range of motion. Ideally it happens before 6 weeks. But its still fairly early. Strength is just as big of component to restore range of motion as actual flexibility training.

Hello, first of all, thank you for the video, it is some of the best advise I’ve seen out there. If wouldn’t mind me asking a quick question; after 2 weeks of acl repairment surgery I have 100 % extension range and 70% bending range motion. Would you say it is ok to start with static bike if bending allows? I know it is not medical advise and it depends on a variety of factors, but would appreciate your general opinion

Sorry to hear its been a challenge for you. That could work. I dont know your scenario and this is not specific advice for you. But more times then not, the person is not doing the stretches often enough throughout the day. Or when relaxed they are keeping their knee bent at rest. Obviously other circumstances could be preventing improvement

Hello just had acl recon, 3 days ago, with bone tendon bone allograft with an internal brace and meniscotomy. I can straighten it no problem. It does lock out backwards sometimes when im walking. Ive got the knee bender thing and im at 55° so far. But my shin where they attached the brace is making me feel like im cutting the blood off from there down and very painful. What can i do to alleviate that?
@sportsrehabexperts3 ай бұрын
Sounds like you have not established full quad control yet. Not uncommon for only 3 days out. But you need to work on getting full quad control to actively control that extension. Personal note - make sure you have a competent clinician confirm you have full extension. Cant tell you how many patients think they have full extension, but they dont!!! That clinician should also be able to adjust your brace appropriately. You may have it on wrong.. But I would have to see what you are describing through an online consultation to give you any direct advice.

Hello, had acl surgery 7 days ago and am working on the extension. At the part of my injury I went 3 months prior to surgery not having full extension (and due to not seeing your videos, thought there was something preventing it from full extension) will that be a factor with extension (not having full extension for 3 months prior)?

Yea it will potentially play a role in your recovery. Might take a bit longer, but will definitely need to be adamant about doing the range of motion homework.

@sportsrehabexperts5 ай бұрын
Could be a lot of factors! Have no idea of your circumstances. But sometimes its more focus on a single exercise, done more frequently (say 5x per day or every 2-3 hours). But a lot of reasons this could be occurring such as strength limitations. Going to PT 3 days after surgery is great, but if your PT doesnt know how to properly progress exercises and challenge you in a way that creates change, then its time to find a different PT
