Hi! I enjoyed your video. Since you are having trouble getting some seed packets of flowers you want to grow, then save the seeds from the growing flowers. It is so much less expensive and not difficult. You simply don't cut the flower, let it mature, and when it's dry you tap off the seeds into an envelope. If you're concerned you won't get it done at the right time, then put a little gauze type drawstring bag over the flower head and tie it on. You can collect the bag later. Loved the flowers!

I've had a vegetable garden most of my adult life, never thought of flowers being cool season like brassicas, etc. We get so hot so fast in April, my 'early' stuff always burns up no matter how early I start things indoors. Last year was my first attempt at gardening through fall and winter and I actually was able to finally grow my own broccoli by fall planting it. Now it all finally makes sense! Garden game changer for me.

I just put some seeds in the water jugs: statice, rudbeckia, nigella, strawflowers. I’m really hoping they germinate. I bought some of these seeds last year and tried to direct sow them in the summer and of course, the ones that needed to be stratified failed to grow. And I was so sad. So I’m hopeful!

Great video! I think this is the first time someone explains cold hardy annuals so clearly. When you Winter Sow in your tunnels. Are they heated? double layers? I gather you sow in trays and move everything out when the soil is workable? I need low tunnels this year but sadly we have so much snow.

A question I had was if I have seeds that are hardy annuals but I missed the fall planting window, can I transplant them before I would with seeds that were not hardy. And when you mention the soil being workable, in KY that means usually when? :) a lot of the seed packets say doesn't transplant well :(

Yes - if the plant is a hardy annual, it can be planted earlier because frost isn't as much of a worry. I consider the soil workable when there isn't much risk of it freezing solid anymore. So, usually sometime in March in my yard. Hope that helps! Happy gardening! :)

Beautiful video as always! Quick question on the sweet peas. I’m in zone 7A, but up in the mountains. I’m wondering about how much snow Sweet peas can take when youve pre-sprouted them and planted out young plants in January. I guess how much easing in to the temperatures should I do when planting out transplants? And how big do you get them before you put them out in the soil mass? I’m thinking about starting mine now in January under my grow lights and planting them out late February. I imagine I’ll mulch around them with straw. But if a frost and snow dumps on them will they be just fine? 🙈

I don't get much snow here in my yard - but there are definitely a lot of factors that can be a problem like temperature and whether or not there's ice. Snow does a wonderful job of insulating a lot of plants and usually isn't a problem, depending upon how much and how long it sticks around. I can't comment on grow lights, because I never ever use them. I have a video specifically about growing sweet peas here on the channel that might be helpful. It's a few years old, but I'm fairly certain it talks about sweet peas and the cold in more detail. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching! :)

I have a friend 😉 who missed the fall planting window & decided to rush germination on some hardy annuals by sowing in jugs in NOVEMBER on a window sill in zone 5b! Why, bc she finally got her hands on the seeds she was looking for & could not wait till February! Then this “friend” put the seedlings out in a zippered greenhouse to grow on. The said friend’s seedlings are growing fine but slowly in the cold frame, getting watered & covered when temps go below 25 degrees, but friend is worried that they won’t survive the really cold temps coming up & whether the seedlings should be transplanted into cell packs or left in jugs. What should I tell this crazy friend of mine? She’s learned her lesson & will never try something this crazy again 😆 & thankfully held some seeds back to winter sow in case these don’t make it. 🥶

It will definitely be difficult to keep everything in the trays during the coldest parts of winter. In my experience, the soil turns rock hard with solid freezes and plants just can't handle it. I would check the hardiness zones of the biennials that "your friend" has - for example, I think foxgloves would probably be fine planted into the ground now (if it's not frozen, that is). I think I would try keeping things in the zippered greenhouse, as normal - and maybe bring them in on nights that are REALLY cold. I'm so sorry I can't offer more help. Tell your friend that I said "Good luck!". :) :)

Though technically more expensive, most people who grow dahlias for a living care very much about the health of their gardens and the product that they sell. Very informative and helpful video -- thank you! I direct seeded some latkspur this fall, but it was a little late so there was almost no germination. Can I expect more germination from that sowing (assuming the birds haven't eaten all the seeds) as the temps warm up in spring?

Hi! Do you find godetia giving decent stem lengths for cutting? Last season I grew some and they were basically round cover and I thought that was their only growth habit but I saw some of your images in a vase! Are those lengths random or consistent?

The godetia did not grow well for me. After transplant, I noticed that they were laying all over the ground, so I added some horizontal netting. They grew to about 2 feet tall, but it was very hard to pick them for cut flowers.

1st time flower grower here. So, all the flowers you mentioned today, can be sown in the milk jugs, right now thru Feb? I DO NOT have a greenhouse, hoop house, etc. I have dirt and a shovel (acquiring milk jugs at the moment) Also, we should save half the seeds to sow directly in August 2021 for a fall planting that will bloom in 2022? You said they can be "winter sown and transplanted" but also said "sown directly" ??? Which seeds can be directly sown now? -Shannon

All of these flowers are cold tolerant to some degree. There are three different times you can sow them during the year and they will grow - fall planting (blooms the next spring), winter sowing (blooms in spring), and direct sow (blooms in spring, but a little later). This video is about the options if you missed the fall planting window or if your winter is too cold to fall plant. If I said they can be winter sowed or direct sowed, that just means that you can use both methods, and they will grow well. In zone 6b, I start winter sowing around January 21st. I definitely forgot to mention some. I often overlook them because I find myself focusing on the flowers. Orach, cress, quinoa, and artemisia all do very well in the spring. I've also used bolted lettuce and ornamental cabbages in arrangements. Hope that helps!

I don’t have a low tunnel or milk jugs but what I do have is seed starting trays with the lids. Do you think that would work?

I space most flower plants about 3-4 inches apart, with the exception of large plants (like sunflowers). 🌱🌱🌱
