my opinion good clickthrough = Good Thumbnail good retention rate = Good Video so for my personal i would like to know the clickthrough from the A/B/C testing. But I understand that for KZbin the watch time and retention rate is more important.

i would understand when youtube would say something like "This feature is only available for channels with 20'000 long form video views per day". I mean, if a channel only has a few hundred views a day, A/B testing doesn't help much

The only thing, of course, not taken into account in that test is the click on the thumbnail because you have fans. If I am subscribed to a channel that I know well, with good content, to be honest, I don't care much about what the thumbnail is. This means that as soon as a thumbnail is displayed from my favorite channel, I will still click on it and watch the entire video. However, the test will say, "that thumbnail is performing well and has a high watch time." And since initially, the fans are the first to receive the notification, it could very well be that it's not the right thumbnail at all. What do you think of that idea?

Yeah that's a really good point. I'd hope the test is giving them all an equal chance right at the beginning but it could very well be showing one to the first large batch in which case it wouldn't be very accurate at all. I think we'll need to proceed with caution once it comes out. Thanks for your input! -Julia

Sorry but i disagree, it should be based off of click rate. If i wanma see how well the VIDEO is doing them i go look at the watch time analyitics. People dont know what they are watchimg fully until they click into the video. The main and first obstacle is getting someone to CLICK into the video. From there they decide if they want to watch the video any further and for how long. I dont need a test for the thumbnail to figure out if tue video will be successful, i need a test that tells me if people will CLICK INTO the video based off title and tumbnail combined. Big fail in my opinion to base it om watch time, when its the video that produces watch time not the thumbnail. Sure the thumbnail COULD intrigue people to watch longer if there's something on the thumbnail that shows a moment or question they are waiting for. But thats circumstantial to the video type and whats on the thumbnail vs whats in the video. Thats not every thumbnail. Its just used to get clicks

if a thumbnail is purely created for clicks and has virtually nothing to do with the actual video, it is, in fact a bad thumbnail, it is for this reason that watch time absolutely needs to be factored in.

It's a bad thumbnail sure if it has nothing to do with the video, but thats an entirely different problem and don't need watch time based off the thumbnail to be what's needed to see. For normal channels making honest content, the main factor missimg is getting people to CLICK into the video. The video can be the best video ever and never get seen if nobody clicks to watch. Click rate is far more important factor to know for the success of the THUMBNAIL. Not if the video is successful and if the thumbnail isn't lying to you. I need to know what will attract clicks. Point and simple. Like I already said, if I want to see watch time info, it's ALREADY in the videos analyticss, I don't need a test to see if the thumbnail will attract watch time, I need the thumbnail to attract clicks. The video is what makes watch time. The test isn't to verify if it matches the damn video. People are going to do that anyway. If it doesn't match it's not going to get watch time, and I certainly don't need a test to verify that. Lol. The test should presume you made a thumbnail that's best suited for the video, with the presumption that the video will be good and provide good watch time. All we need the test for is to see if the thumbnail that's already matching the video is going to be good enough compared to others thumbnails. Will it stand out, will it attract attention to get it clicked on? Is it doing its job of getting clicks? That's the ONLY thing useful that it needs to do

@@CallMeGameGirl Watch time is based on a persons expectations of what they think they will be getting out of the video. A good video might not deliver on that if the thumbnail is not on point. A good thumbnail must create the right expectations to avoid people clicking off. A good thumbnail must also stand out from the crowd to get people to click. Thumbnail A doesn't create the right expectations, people click off. Thumbnail b does not stand out from the crowd so it gets lower click through rate but a good watch time ratio. Thumbnail c gets the same attention as thumbnail a but has the same +/- watch time as thumbnail b. Clearly thumbnail c is the right choice. This breakdown might not apply to you, but not everyone has your excellent grasp of how to create a good thumbnail and this new feature will help those others develop a better understanding over time.

@@CallMeGameGirl If I click on a thumbnail because I am expecting something, and get something else and just click off of it, it means the CTR is high but the watch time rate is going to be lower. You want to see that the thumbnail is attracting the people who will actually stay to watch the video.

@@EvelynM-vlogs yes except that's not what is needed in a thumbnail tool. Someone can watch any number of videos on how to make a thumbnail worth making, but having an engine verify if it's good based off if it will be click worthy is what would actually be useful and something you can't necessarily get from watching a video and having trial and error thumbnails after the video is already up. So I stand my point on watch time being a dumb idea for a thumbnail tester
