Awesome end result! Of course I knew like 80% of it in advance because I drew the art but you delivered it really well! I also LOVE what you did with the Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass art (i kept rewinding to watch that part over and over, it was so satisfying to watch the clip show with the art all sliding in) ;D About the only meaningful bit of discussion my brain can muster ATM is that IDK if I agree with you about the photographs. Then again I'm like the fuckin' dad from Calvin and Hobbes when it comes to "misery builds character" (at least in retrospect), but some of my most nostalgic and fond memories are from times when I was in places or doing things I _really_ didn't want to be doing, but then I found ways to pass the time that then became inexorably linked _to_ those memories. Like pacing back and forth at a church community service trip in Flin Flon thinking about Earthbound hacks and my stories and enjoying the cold summer air. You might think it's hampered by the silent protagonists making it impossible to know if they DID have any way of making things less miserable, but I think that's exactly the kind of player-projection that works best with video games, is imagining what the characters were doing or saying when nothing important to the plot was going on. Y'know, like... what did Terra, Locke and Edgar talk about on the way up the mountain to find Sabin? Maybe they talked about the weather. Maybe Edgar shared some stories from his childhood that the mountain reminded him of. Maybe they sang a song, or shared riddles, or maybe they played a game. "What happened when they got to Mt. Ordeals besides more JUMPING and SHOOTING", y'know?

I was worried that the Whisper Weaver kinda came and went too fast, and there were also a couple that I think I ended up not using at all, but I'm keeping them all around for next time. The photograph debate is definitely one of the points I knew was subjective going into it, and if anything, I think I actually disagree with myself on what constitutes a fond memory, or more to the point, what constitutes an IMPORTANT memory. A lot of my most important memories were during some pretty bad times too (like the "I am clenching my FISTS HERE" incident). I could probably make an entire nother half hour long video just debating against myself on this issue, 'cause I see so much stuff on Twitter from people that makes it look like their life is just one non-stop pleasure cruise, yet at the same time, you see posts of cute animals or chibi characters curled up in bed saying things like "Can I just be a burrito all day?" and I can never figure out which one is the real "them". I guess maybe it's a little bit of both. But far be it for me to say that only the happy stuff should be remembered. I already wish now that I could change that! DAMN YOUUUUUUUU no but seriously thank you. I'm glad we've been able to agree to disagree and/or debate on so many things and yet still be friends. I think, in terms of how EarthBound "treats its characters," a lot of it comes down to what you discussed earlier about Ness being a catalyst for the player's childhood. Even if you have a close group of friends, you don't really know a whole lot about them when you're younger, right? You share some common interests, maybe you bond over something else, but you aren't quite at the point where you're having genuine conversations or learning much about each other's pasts, hopes, or wants. The player gets to be attached to them, especially with the Jeff and Poo chapters, and there's definitely something that still hits me when you read the letters from Dr. Andonuts and the Polestar Preschool student body, but you? You're just Ness. You're a kid worried about kid stuff like missing home or feeling sick. You like your friends, you want them to be just as okay, but there's a reason Ness/the player never has to worry about them being homesick instead. I might be looking into this a bit too much, but I think it can sorta serve a purpose in that regard. Sorry if I wasn't sufficient in clarifying my points.

I honestly hadn't thought about how weather forecasters constantly call sunny warm days "beautiful" and cloudy and/or rainy days "ugly", "foreboding" or any other negative word you can think of. I think that's why I've taken a sub-conscious decision to love rainy days even more than sunny warm days. That's an interesting observation. Great video! Enjoyed it a lot.

The point you make in the last few minutes, where you talk about how different the tones of EarthBound and mother 3 are, is honestly the biggest reason why I like Mother 3 more. For almost the entire game, EarthBound is full of jokes and weirdness, and doesn't really take itself seriously... up until the end, where it suddenly goes so full-throttle into "dark and disturbing" territory that it barely feels like the same game, and it gives me some serious (heh) emotional whiplash. Mother 3's alternating between comedy and emotional storytelling feels much more natural and measured to me, which, when combined with having some nice worldbuilding, a consistent, ongoing story arc, and treating the characters more like characters than mere player avatars, makes it a story I find myself much more invested in. The extra care they put into the writing goes a long way toward making the player care about what happens, and who it happens to.

I love your fake sequelitis videos because they just ooze with charm. It's pretty obvious that have a passion for video games and I really like how you talk about your feelings with the games. Not just your opinion on certain game mechanics and such, but your own personal experiences with the game and how they relate to your own life and your perspective on the world. That's also something I really like about your let's plays. In my opinion the best episodes are when you're talking about some childhood story, or a random insignificant thing that happened recently that just slightly irks you, or your general outlook on life etc. and it's the same with this one. Your personality really shines through in this video and that's something people tend to shy away from when they do reviews and such, so a wildly different perspective like this is really refreshing, even if I can't relate to everything you're talking about. Keep 'em coming man.

Fantastic video Tim! Just for the sake of discussion (and because I love Mother 3 a lot more than EB) I feel like there were a few major things I love about the game that you left out that I wanted to bring up. One is how the music of M3 contributes to the narrative; it has a ton of leitmotifs for characters or areas that are remixed or changed to create a different emotional response or just to add to the story. A good example of this is how the song "Mom's Hometown" has a part of the Love theme in it to show the happy community and tightly knit everyone is, and the song "A Railway in Our Village!" is at face value a very happy and upbeat song for Tazmily after the time skip, but lacks the Love theme to show how Fassad and the Pigmasks have changed it. That might be reading too much into it, but it's something that's my headcanon at least. Another memorable leitmotif being Porky's theme that's used in more songs than I can remember. I just love how the music adds to the narrative through using recognizable tunes to give you an idea on what might be going on. The other thing is while Earthbound has a ton of different towns and M3 only really has the one main one, it's mainly just because the structures of the story are so different. In Earthbound you're a group of kids traveling around the world to fight an evil entity that's spreading, where the focus is on your party; while in Mother 3, the story is really about Tazmily and how the community changes over time in response to everything that happens (the perspective shifts throughout the first half of the game just help establish who everyone is and how life is for them all). Tazmily is the only town because (SPOILERS AHEAD) it hits that much harder when things change, and people start to leave or act differently around Chapter 4, and ESPECIALLY when everybody is gone near the end of the game. The story, while also being about Lucas and co, is about the people of Tazmily. Sorry for the really long, not well thought out, rambly post, these are just two major distinctions between the two games that I thought you might bring up and wanted to write down here just in case you didn't. Thanks again for making such a great video! (and also loving cloudy weather, we are kindred spirits in that way)

Hot take "Fake" Sequalitis is better than the "Real" Sequalitis I feel that Tim's kinda more understanding about game design and story than Egoraptor is, even when he goes on a tangent that doesn't seem like it relates to the game itself, it does in some sense. Like how Tim was talking about the clouds and the 'perfect' weather then tied it to realism and reliability to the characters, rather than cramming in another game for no other reason than he doesn't like how that game plays. I really didn't like Arin's OoT vs LtP's Sequalitis because of it, he brought Skyward Sword in for basically no reason in terms of comparing the two games.
@GalaxiaSword5 жыл бұрын
As well as making bad comparisons between LTTP and OOT. Which makes it seem like he just sucks at 3D Zelda. Personally, I’m not a fan of Skyward Sword, but that game had nothing to do with what he was talking about and it was just hastily inserted just so he can bash it. Tim does a better job comparing and contrasting. Bonus points for him not being obnoxious and annoying to listen to.

Kudos on getting this done. I always knew the runtime was hella ambitious and it's always awesome to see when you never give up and get this all out here. That said, I do wanna offer some actual critique on the video and yeah, it's mostly the last big chunk of it. It felt a little incongruous with the rest of the video for me- it's not a bad section, in fact I find it the most interesting and insightful part of the whole thing, moving beyond the usual spectrum of a video game review. But that's what makes it stand out. I can definitely see where it might have been its own video and honestly, I think it still may have been better off that way. It's like the meat of the whole thing. It's like your thesis. A whole video about how games TREAT their characters, how it lets them react, how a player connects with them- that's some liquid gold right there, and I feel like if it had been a video called "Earthbound is Meaner than Mother 3" I would have been a lot more prepared and invested when all of a sudden I'm watching weather reports. That was a bizarre feeling, but like, I'm here for it. That's the kind of Zeltik, Schaffrillas, delicious clickbait analytical I'm into. But before I get into my 40 minute long analysis here as I'm wont to do, let me just say it's always nice to see some different content from you. Looking forward to the next one.

Tim, I think this is your best sequelitis yet and despite not completing Mother 3 yet, I agree with most of your points. The rhythm battle system is a unique touch that if there is a 4th Mother game on the horizon, it should be brought back. But I'm terrible at the rhythm battle so that's wishful thinking. The bit you did near the end about suspension of disbelief was really good !! There's a lot of theory about stuff like that in theatre and imo you hit the nail on the head with how you explained the occasional issues the series has with that. Hoo boy! This was quite a trip. I gotta say, I agree with a lot of your points; especially the "fondest of memories" bit that hit me hard yet so true. It's like going to a boring place for adults (in a kid's point of view) and having to smile for a photo because... well, you 'have to'. Whereas obtaining something everlasting and meaningful from someone you know is THE fondest of all memories. And Can I just mention that temperature thing too? I've actually nearly fainted from hypothermia in extremely cold winter-like environments and lemme tell ya that entering a 0-5 degrees ferinheight environment after swimming inside for a bit is AWFUL. I will say though, I don't think "extreme" heat of something over 100 degrees ain't great either, but man. I'd much rather take a warm and rainy/foggy day than a burning desert or winter snow place, that's for sure. After recently doing another playthrough of Earthbound, I can safely say that this is 100% accurate. Fantastic work, Tim, and keep being amazing.

I definitely get what you're saying with the soundtracks. EarthBound's more alien feeling sounds I feel is a result of much of its enemy theming. You are facing off against aliens, really. With Mother 3's much more down to earth OST, most of what you're fighting is, or at one point, was fully organic, which I feel both OSTs manage to work very well for the respective games. As for the final bosses, yeah, Giygas is conceptually great, and what it does is fantastic. But with Mother 3's, I really enjoy how you really don't do anything during it. Yeah, it's very story heavy, but it serves that incredibly well, making for an emotional final encounter, and I really loved what it did. Really solid work, overall on this video.
@BigKlingy5 жыл бұрын
I applaud you for avoiding mentioning spoilers for a game that isn't official out in English. Though I'm weirdly in the opposite boat: I don't know a ton about Earthbound apart from the final boss, but I know almost all Mother 3's plot. Probably because I always found Lucas more interesting than Ness in Smash, so I looked up more stuff on his game. Speaking of which, Ness is practically the only experience I have with Earthbound. It, Final Fantasy 6 and Super Mario RPG never got released in Australia while I was growing up, so kids of my generation only had Pokemon and Final Fantasy 7 when it came to RPG introductions. I'll need to try it some time. Edit: Your speech on finding it hard when the game expects you to laugh at the characters' misery hit home for me a bit, since I get that a lot too. It happens on children's cartoons especially often, they'll have one character as the designated "Butt Monkey" whose whole role is for the audience to laugh at their suffering. I've personally never found that funny (unless the "monkey" is a complete asshole who had it coming), and it's interesting to see someone else feel that way too.

I really enjoy seeing your in depth look on this, Tim! I never considered some of that stuff you said about Earthbound, but wow, I can see how can hit home! And yeah, even I noticed how all four heroes are basically silent protagonists in Earthbound in my last playthrough. However... That last playthrough was when I beat it for the first time ever. I was in a rough patch in life at the time, that I am still recovering from. And I was sitting on my bed, 3DS in hand, on the final boss of Earthbound. I know I'm close, and I am literally in tears. I never beat the game before, and I really wanted to help Ness and the others. I'm crying from happiness when I finally win, and I it takes a while before I calm down... and then I had to avoid a laughing fit as my dad just had to call me during the final cutscene ala Chuggaaconroy! I do agree with you that Mother 3 is the better game though. Better story, better battles, I even like the party a little bit more. But that final battle hit me just as hard. I got to say that both games were very good at that! At least to me anyway!

Hell yeah, the return of the best series! I don't blame you for going in hard on EarthBound since I get anal about a lot of its little things too, like the limited walking animations or the start of the game actually kind of sucking due to solo Ness having a super limited inventory and no interesting battle options. Also, if warm weather bothers you that much, I'd advise you to steer clear from Florida; living there has made me feel like a hot day up north is freezing.

Man, that whole rant about the sun is pretty relatable. While I don't really know Fahrenheit, this whole thing kinda happens in most places too, with the super hot weather being the status quo for good, regardless of the fact that not only it comes with personal preference, but also the fact that a varied weather is better than just having one thing all the time. Not only that, but I just live in a place that tends to be consistently hot, even in autumn and winter, so it becomes annoying really quickly. I don't think I should go on with that, because that's not even the subject of the video, I'm just making an observation. Anyway, I'm glad to see a pretty unbiased review of these games, everything I see tends to just call them masterpieces that have no flaws and only mention the good stuff, while generally glancing over a lot of problems with these games, and neglecting a lot of things that might not drive everyone into it due to subjectivity. Granted most people who praise the games tend to people who don't know much about RPGs and don't like the genre and think that these games are the only standouts from the usual fantasy setting or anything (despite the fact that games are pretty fantasious in their own way). Yet, you still handle with care knowing that a lot of people enjoy it, and you never feel like you're just unjustifyingly bashing the games, as they have a lot of merit indeed, they're just not perfect as a lot of people tend to say (because nothing is perfect anyway). I do prefer the whole tone and gameplay of Mother 3 as a whole, but I understand the appeal of the first two games, and I think they're pretty inventive, even if they have some little flaws which I believe were fixed in Mother 3. (Mainly the gameplay of Mother 3 feeling more interesting). I don't find the games as relatable because I don't live in the USA, so a slightly more ambiguous or foreign setting feels interesting to me regardless. And what tends to make me feel relatable about things is generally more character interactions or whatever, than the setting. I can get pretty into a game regardless of any of that. I'm generally not an advocate for remakes of a lot of games just for the sake of it, but I think this is indeed a series that could benefit from a remake treatment, granted it keeps the appeal and a similar visual style, while maintaining what makes it special, and streamlining everything that might be inconvenient, or improving on things that could put off some players. Earthbound Beginnings/Mother 1/Zero is the best example obviously, but I do think a little overhaul could help Earthbound to keep up with Mother 3. (I do think for example, the games could benefit from being a little bit faster gameplay-wise).

Awesome anslysis and comparison on both games! I personally love Mother 3 more, maybe because I haven't finished Earthbound growing up (I was stuck in Twoson as a kid), but I can definitely see why it has a devoted fanbase--it has a huge amount of charm for an SNES title.

I do think your idea for The Antagonist as a 'negative review' series of beloved titles was a cool idea I also like how you didn't go for the route of "oh well in Chapter 3 Jim's pet goat blew up" and spoiled whatever happened in the game, thank you for that genuinely

I think he meant that the suffering that Mother 3's characters get is treated with some respect and seriousness, while Earthbound's protagonists suffering is intended to be more like slapstick humor.

I’m always gonna prefer Mother 3 and hope that it does end up getting a proper international release one day. I admittedly never thought Earthbound was especially phenomenal, but I do agree that it seemed like a nice break from the routine JRPG’s of the early-mid 90’s. I’m at least happy that people do have solid access to Earthbound now and they don’t have to spend an arm and a leg getting it

Another aspect of earthbound that some players might find discouraging is that the first few hours of the game (before your party assembles) can be rough. Not to mention, some parts of the game can be quite opaque.

Hey Tim, I just felt it was my duty as a rhythm game lover to mention that the first age of rhythm games didn't begin with Guitar Hero - it was started in 1997 with Konami's Beatmania. Dance Dance Revolution also started in 1998. These games and several others from the era are still going on strong today, so Guitar Hero was really more the Western mainstream beginning of rhythm games... with exception to DDR which was pretty well known by that time. Edit: I would also be making a mistake to not mention PaRappa the Rapper in 1996!

I enjoy these way more than the actual sequelitis videos by Egoraptor. Mainly because Tim actually talks about the games and compares and contrasts them, unlike Arin who's always bitching and complaining about shit that isn't even true, making bad annoying jokes, and acting like he knows game design despite it being a known fact that he's horrible at video games.
