Awesome...Awesome to the max. A great and understanding approach to a hot button of a game. The feel of X-2 was just so different that the shock still hasn't really worn off, but you're right, the means IS fun! In FFX, it's hard to imagine what a world without the impending doom of Sin would really look like. It still wasn't peaceful, but it was nice to see the people embrace some happiness outside of the entertainment of Blitzball; Yuna especially. As a side note, Yuna shared the name with a J-Pop star at the time of the first games creation, in some ways, her Songstress class may have been a natural conclusion for her namesake; her dances of the dead now bringing the true light of hope back to Spira. Great work my dude!

NCS, I have never commented on any of your videos before but I have been a casual fan for well over 5 years. I know this won't mean much coming from a random KZbin comment, but I think you are legitimately talented at these kinds of videos. I have watched a lot of KZbin and generally have a low opinion of the quality of the content, but this is some good stuff. I know you're a humble guy and I understand it might seem undeserving to you to receive this kind of praise (I'm in that same zone) but I think you have what it takes to go beyond making Let's Plays and making more edited content like this. I think your creativity and humor shine best when you take the time to craft these kinds of videos. Even if you have no interest in expanding on the kind of content you make, at least know that I would love some more of this style of content at least once in awhile. As a teenager I played ffx-2 before ffx (I discovered the series when my mom got ff7, and played whatever I could get my hands on from it), and hoooh boy was I confused. Still finished it, mostly because I enjoyed the battle system and the music, but after having completed ffx several times since then I could totally understand why people disliked it at first. To me its just a feelgood, upbeat game that still makes me happy to play to this day, and I don't think it needs to be much more than that.

You cram your videos like these so full of jokes that I have to keep rewinding to get the full effect, or pause to read the little jokes and jabs on screen. I love it. You're the only person smart enough to bring up a game series worth WATCHING in 2019, the whole video giving me nostalgia, and then when I was just about done with the video, WHAM, BAM, Final Fantasy XII Rabanastre soundtrack. That song alone gave me an entire roller coaster of emotion. From the memories of the first time playing the game in 2010, to the depression of remembering making the ex play through it a few years later, to the rage I had at Zodiac Age when they released it on PC, to the sheer JOY of how much I love that game. Except Pinewood Chops, fishing minigame and Yiazmat. Seriously, I think I like your "fake sequelitis" more than the real ones, or at least they're on the same level. You have such a respectable opinion, always give good reasoning, and have a voice that I can listen to for hours on end (and often do, hence the reason there's LP's you've done that I have watched through over 10 times). I haven't played either of these games, but it's a sin that Final Fantasy hasn't done much with the job system since X-2 (outside the MMOs, of course). The customization jobs allow makes for really creative strategies and makes each playthrough unique, which is a big reason why I love FF5 so much. That said, I'm glad that at least Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler have fun job systems, but that makes me wonder why Square Enix is content to exclude it from the main series.
@cartooncritic70455 жыл бұрын
If I might throw my two cents into the mix, I think it might be because the games that have Job systems in the main FF games tend to be less popular than their contemporaries: FF3 is the least popular FF game by far, FF5 is sandwiched between the beloved 4 and 6, and FFX-2 has a drastically different tone than FFX as well as being the first mainline FF game to not have Uematsu as the main composer. Square may see the Job system as being "too complicated" for its playerbase (which, fun fact, was one of the SNES version of FF5 was never localized) and just decide to keep it to their smaller, more experimental spin-offs like the FFTactics and Bravely series. Of course, I think we're also at a point where anything short of an FPS will be more accepted than FF15's battle system because apparently Action-RPGs are bad and turn-based systems are the only form of JRPGs.

I read a manga published around the time this game first came out in Japan. Seeing the mangaka discuss it with her fans in the fan mail section was really interesting. She pointed out some of the same things as you. One of the worries people had were the skimpy clothes of the main characters, which she didn't see as a problem as not only could they defend themselves, they are also female protagonists in a time there wasn't many. The mangaka is Arina Tanemura for those of you who might wonder, I unfortunately do not remember specifically which manga..!

Nice and level-headed as always, Tim! I'm particularly glad you brought up the reason why the tone is so opposite of X's. Even if it doesn't change one's mind, it certainly helps make it easier to understand why X-2 is, in many ways, an antithesis to X. A slow-paced, turn-based, story-heavy linear RPG Vs. a much lighter, side quest-focused, almost Action RPG. Kiiiiiind of like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, but, y'know, more different from each other. I tend to think of XIII (or maybe XII, if you don't mind it playing like an MMO), as the first time it felt like ATB was done "right", but this video reminded me of how this game approached it. The greater emphasis on speed and constantly inputting commands, even while other things are happening, really alleviates that feeling I always got that ATB was just a turn-based system that forces you to wait even when nothing's happening. Being able to change jobs mid-battle also makes it feel more like you can adapt when something unexpected happens, to an extent. So I guess X-2 did some of the things I liked about XIII's battle system first, then.
@eremesguile90365 жыл бұрын
Funny as to me XIII was the first time ATB was done wrong. I actually don't mind the game as a whole, even getting slightly nostalgic about it recently, but when it first came out I hated how you only had control of the party leader. And for some reason the rest of your party forgets how to use phoenix downs when they're not being directly controlled resulting in game overs while you still have a healthy team, aside from the leader. X-2 is for sure the best example of how the system should be done.

Well this should be an interesting ride, I'm wondering how you'll even compare these games because from what I hear, X-2 is REALLY different from X. I actually played Revenant Wings quite a bit. It was a weird RTS/RPG hybrid gameplay-wise, but it expanded on the world building of 12 a bit, they managed to get some of 12's amazing songs onto the DS which is very impressive (that part of RW where you get to revisit a bunch of locations from 12 was so hype for that reason), and I like how Vaan and Penelo got focus this time and how they made the plot-irrelevant NPC kids from the slums in 12 full party members. I don't think I ever finished it but it was okay for what it was. 2:34 Okay, whoever you're playing as has nearly the EXACT same run-cycle as Vanille from FF13. Don't ask how I can tell that, but I can. Maybe they re-used some 3D assets? 6:54 THANK. YOU. THAAAAAANK YOU!!! This needs to be said way more often. And this is coming from someone who actually likes both 13 and 10. 10 Is really similar in structure: long hallways with no backtracking, until the game opens up 80% of the way in. Blitzball is the only real side thing you get, and then you get a LONG stretch of plot where you can't even do that! I own the HD remaster so I might as well give X-2 a try someday.

This is the first Fake Sequelitis video I've watched, and I was pretty much rolling on the floor the whole time (which would have been awkward since I'm at school teaching, but still)! It's kinda funny; I feel like the X vs. X-2 debate is similar to the FF7 vs. FF8 debate. Which is better? Opinion swung pretty wildly with those games, as well, and it's been interesting to see how that's morphed and shifted over time. My biggest complaint with X-2, though (aside from the story's relative paucity): They nerfed the heck out of Blitzball. :(

@Caront5 жыл бұрын
@@NintendoCapriSun Understandable! The idea of a game being framed by its time & the emotions around it is another nice, meaty topic. . for another time, perhaps. :D Admittedly, one of the reasons I gravitate towards this type of conversation now is because my latest run through FFX was two weeks ago. To me, it still largely holds up, though the sidequests are still endlessly frustrating (bleepity bleeping 0.0.0...) As for FF7, I think its opinion has largely swung over time. In its day, it was fantastic. It did more to mainstream RPGs than perhaps any other game in existence. For that reason alone, I enjoy it. It's not aged well, though, methinks, though I still love the chocobo breeding and being able to basically run laps around everyone with not-all-that-much prep. :D FF8, on the other hand, I think has largely suffered from two things, historically: not being FF7 and drawing spells. I think the first has basically leveled itself off, as the two games have gone through almost Impressionist-type swings in opinion over time. The second? I think that takes more digging into mechanics than many like to do, but a short time with Triple Triad can take care of that. It'll break the game in half. On the whole, though, I'd love to see you play through FF7, whether here or on stream. It'd be fun! Especially since your Friday streams were Final Fantasy Fridays to begin with... :D Of course, I say that, but I'd love to see anything, really. I only wish that I could have made it in on Friday when you were still doing PvZ, that I hadn't missed Ghost Trick, etc.

Sorry for the late response after watching it a few times. It's been a long time since you made another one of these. FFX was my first Final Fantasy on the PS2 after playing a demo of one of these PS2 demo cds that has you fight Khimari when going out of Besaid Island and then Sin on the boat to Khalika Village. I really love FFX's story, lore, and turn base strategy that in my second or third playthrough I finally understand how to beat enemies and bosses, getting all the secret treasures to get the Magus Sisters and Anima, and leveling everybody, including Khimari for Monster catching and getting the celestial weapons. I should play the HD remake since I never played the international version before with the added content that's already available. FX-2 was very different when I first played it since at the time, I haven't beaten FFX. I stopped playing it half way and didn't return to play it. Hope you can make more of these often in the future. :)

Excellent video! I first played FFX-2 about a year after playing the first game for the first time (and about a month after the second time) and I found the game fairly enjoyable. It's great if you just want to play and have fun, but as a completionist, playing the HD remaster I found it to be more boring and stressful than anything, so next time I play I'm definitely not going for 100%. Oh and I believe the monster capturing was originally in the PAL and NTSC-J regions of the game, much like the advanced sphere grid and dark aeons in FFX. I didn't personally find it (the monster capturing) that interesting, but it has enough depth that other people could probably spend hundreds of hours playing around with it.

I'm a couple years shy of 35, though my two favorites ended up being 6 and 7... SNES (3) and PS1 respectively. 10 and 10-2 had me thinking, how punk rock would it have been if Paine was the Maine protagonist of 10, and we could have just skipped 10-2 altogether. Maybe I'm just weird, but I was constantly hoping for a much more grim-dark world along with a considerably more tenebrous story, since the world was being such a tease about it. My Dungeons & Dragons tendencies were kicking in, and I wanted to change so much of the story. Tidus unfortunately broke my immersion and suspension of disbelief, as I really couldn't identify with him at all, even being demotivated to empathize with his and Yuna's plight. Well, why doesn't somebody just do a creepypasta rom-hack of FF10 with FF12 quality character and environment modeling and make Paine a paranormal investigator who discovers Sin to be a Great Old One like Cthulhu or Dagon? Well, no... but such a thing sounds pretty cool. Such is an idea of sorts, and I've seen H.P. Love-hacks before, especially having to note the Call of Cthulhu Super Mario World hack, which is wonky, but still really good. Even so, the story for 10 was overbearing to an extent, and Tidus was forced by the game's code to act like a chaotic good sports star, where as I felt like playing him... actually not at all... and play as Auron instead. 10 was so obnoxiously upbeat in such an overly bright but somehow dark world, to which I figured Wakka might as well be banging Lulu's coconuts together like in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. ...but I digress. 10 was quite a bit of fun, regardless of how much the story and some of the characters got on my nerves. I thought 10-2 would be good, but I could barely get past 3 hours of play before hawking it and the player's guide off for I don't even know what.

I wouldn't lie that the main "villain" especially Vegnagun is alittle on the weak side in terms of threatening scale. Plus it doesn't help that in order to even control the darn beast machine it's not even a simple press of a button, just what. I do kinda wish Nooj was the villain or at least the real villain, doesn't help that he's voiced by Sephy. I'll still enjoy FFX-2 for what it tried to show. FFX will forever hold onto my memories of my all time favorite FF game overall.

I have found myself wanting to replay the 2nd half at times but I just can't bring myself to slog through the slow, campy, low-strategy first half. Yeah, you get a lot more dressphere and board options in the 2nd half, but then you're funneled into either catnippy Trigger Happy or an extra 10hr of leveling to beat the postgame content, so that's boring, too. The enemies are boring, having only a couple things we didn't see in 10 already, and as he said, they were nerfed...or, in the case of Via Infinito, buffed at an alarming rate. All the "new" areas are staggeringly plain and lack any creativity (look at that Besaid cave or the new areas in Seymour's mansion, for instance...flat walls, no personality). It's just so boring to play and it all feels nonsensical; this game opened my eyes to how important GOOD music is to a Final Fantasy feel, too. Even when I enjoyed the combat or story more in the second half, running around to that techno j-pop crap and playing minigames to somehow earn a better ending was just garbage...like...the vast majority of the side stuff in the game has nothing to do with anything...now, the Farplane area was pretty decent, if a little boring visually at the start, and even the Vegnagun fights had some pretty good music (especially for how odd and twitchy it looks). I'll just ignore the super-trope final boss. It may have been ok if they just changed all the characters' names and appearances and didn't call it Final Fantasy, but as-is, it is my least-favorite Final Fantasy. An OK game in its own right, it looks like garbage next to most of the others and did zero justice to FFX. That said, I did like your video and you can have your own opinion even if it's wrong :P Hahaha jk...just my opinion, too.

Soon this wont be fake, and you will have more vids than sequelitis. I like these videos more than Egos. Mainly because it's not blatantly saying one is clearly worse, just a sort of, hey this is two sequels let's see what they did differently.

Tim releases this at the same time as Nintendo releases ff10 and 10-2 trailers. Coincidence? I THINK NOT!

nice video Tim! as someone who was introduced to gaming via ps2 games like final fantasy x and kingdom hearts, I have always loved x-2. looking at it objectively as an adult, sure it has its flaws. the storytelling isn’t as fleshed out as x, most of the mini games are frustrating or tedious. but I think it serves as a good epilogue to the world of Spira. I loved being able to witness Spira rebuild itself and watch characters who had resigned themselves to their respective roles in that semi-apocalyptic world try new things. I love the juxtaposition of x-2’s upbeat, fast paced style of worldbuilding and gameplay compared to x’s slower combat and heavy story. x-2’s overall tone is a refreshing break from the usual “oppressed group fights the empire/organized religion/demigod”

The reason that X doesn't get panned for being a hallway while XIII does is because X doesn't make you FEEL like you're trapped in the hallway. There's a sense of purpose to travelling in a straight line, and there's a little bit of backtracking here so it doesn't feel like you're going in a single direction too much. With XIII you COULD argue that the hallway ties into themes of the game, where the characters start deciding for themselves as the world opens up. But I'd argue that's weak because by the time the world opens up you already hate the characters and the story is pretty poorly told. It also feels like it lacks the purpose X had in its pilgrimage because the characters are just wandering.

I'm surprised you didn't even mention the monster system from the second game. It's an entirely new way to play the game (not to mention yet another nightmare to complete >

enjoyed the video. glad to see you didn't just shit on X-2 like a lot of people do. you gave it a fair shake. don't get me wrong, i think the story is pretty.... eh.... but i love it for what it did to the gameplay of X. it's basically the only job system i /really/ like in the whole of final fantasy.

I never really understood that name but in the remastered x-2 you can capture monsters and train them to fight along side you any game that does that I like I don't know why I like that concept so much.

Final Fantasy 10 is my favorite FF game and my second favorite game of all time so this was kinda awesome. And yeah the story is sorely lacking in FFX-2 But it had positives too, Like listening to Maechen and having George newbern Voice Sephiroth after his exceptional performance with Nooj. The 1000 words segment and song are pretty sweet too. But the Gameplay was really fun and interesting. And Yeah and the absolute best part about Spira living with Sin was that they banded together. As soon as Sin died, They started killing each other instead. Humans, Right?

I remember playing FF-X back in college. It was such a great game and the first Final Fantasy game on the ps2. I played FF-X2 years later but found it a bit dull and never finished it.
