This is what I like most about Buddhism. It's actually less of a religion and more of a philosophy to guide your life and to alleviate suffering. This philosophy has also stood the test of time very well, unlike the preaching of most other religions.

Something about deifying this Buddha doesn't sit well with me since he taught that he himself was just a man and teacher, and that a person could adopt some, all, or none of his teachings at their own discretion.

Out of 85,000 Buddhists sutras, I don't find everything is similar to Hinduism.There are similarity of dharma in few texts with Hinduism.Buddha was Hindu by birth but not by his choice.he reached the stage of Nirvana through his own experiences.Actually he argued about many blind faith in Hinduism such as Brahminism,caste discrimination and old Hindu rituals like hom,yegga and animal sacrifice!Buddha said, you don't have to rely on god to seek better Karma,merit and to achieve the ultimate bliss .Hinduism has belief system of uncountable gods and goddess.

A universal eternal state where the richness of the individual unique Soul is dead, and void; Left only with a endless repetitive existence of dead, empty, universal consciousness at its pinnacle(Enlightenment). A never ending eternity of existence separated from God's grace and God's unending love. In God's grace, each and every Beings uniqueness exist with absolute dignity. We are so precious. Don't believe the lies of any other path, than the path of Jesus Christ.

The Best thing About Buddhas teachings were to have a reality check and not let the luxuries get to our mind. Equanimity is something I feel is the biggest weapon for anyone who seeks for both materialistic and spiritual success. I couldn't have agreed more to his philosophy.

I'm from the United States, so growing up I was never really exposed to eastern philosophy. I was raised thinking that Catholicism and western philosophy was the only way, and until recently I felt this inner struggle to conform to its beliefs. I would feel guilt, knowing that I was doing something that was going against its doctrine. Recently though I have been exposed to eastern philosophy, that of Buddhism in particular. Nothing in my entire life has ever made so much sense and I don't see how the entire world does not think and see the world in this way. I find it amazing that you aren't forced into doing anything. You're simply asked to keep an open mind, to see the world in a different perspective. The fact that this isn't taught let alone even mentioned in western teaching is mind-boggling, saddening even.

Buddhism never made weird rules like other religions, it's an open minded religion that doesn't have any strict meaningless law but It has some moral paths that one can follow for being a better human. Fold paths are not even religious, it's just logical and karma based. The main motto is "do good deeds". You can be anything or can freely choose to do anything can still be a Buddhist. There is is so called rule that you can't eat meat in buddhism but still you can. Blue C I feel the term “dominating” is bit skeptical for Buddhism don’t you think ? “Dominating desires” is again a desire. It’s like you desiring to get rid of desires. Suffering can be eliminated by following eight fold path as given in the four noble truths. It includes controlling desires but much wider than just that.

Surely attachment and investment in others is the root of happiness as well as sadness and the sadness is simply the necessary price for happiness. Does it not require attachment to have compassion. A love of learning and a desire for understanding to obtain wisdom? A desire to help to be generous? Is meaning in life not derived from what you value? My teacher went to India to teach English there, while she was there she went on tours and on this particular tour they visited a temple where monks would practice Buddhism or what not and take in children who had been abandoned. She saw a monk in the shade of the tree, and said she had not seen a calmer face more than that monk, she said if serenity was a person, that monk would be it. She said she felt ethereal vibrations or energies surrounding him, and it was really beautiful. I mean i'd like to visit monks and really learn from them at least once in my life, I thought I'd share this lol because now she is a loyal Buddhist and is the best teacher ever.

It's useful to notice that "suffering" is an inadequate translation of the original term "dukkha", which is more closely related to "dissatisfaction" or "unfulfillment", as if your life's purpose is always beyond achievement, no matter what you do or possess. The Dharma - the teachings of the Buddha - aim at helpping one ceasing this existential itching.

When I was in high school, I got some suicidal thoughts creeping up on me. I confided in my mom, who was Buddhist but she never ever enforced it on me. She explained that Buddha said living is suffering, I’ll only face more pain and struggles in my future. She then added that every human being was born to find their meaning in life, and that meaning is find a way to live without suffering. I was confused as a kid but yes the more I experienced struggles in life I learned how to better cope with things or find a new outlet. Slowly I understand I was consciously changing my mindset and saving myself from depression. I was essentially practicing Buddhism without knowing it.

Great. I just read "Buddha and his Dhamma" By Symbol of Knowledge DR AMBEDKAR. Do read his book, its great interpretation of Buddha Dhamma, and no doubt thats my fav book. Lao Tzu = enlightened, Budda = enlightened, Osho = fraud. He had the largest collection of Rolls Royces (confiscated by his wealthy students) and was also a bigot: have a look at his quotes on homosexuals. I wouldn't dare to utter his name next to those two icons. For the greatest sage of the 20th century, check out the works of Ramana Maharshi. "Suffering" doesn't quite express what Buddha was talking about. Rather, he was speaking of unsatisfactory-ness. That is to say that all things humans might strive for are transitory and, even if successfully attained, ultimately do not bring satisfaction and are subject to entropy--just as we are.

GladX That can work, but for most people who are looking for the quickest and more direct path to Enlightenment, I believe it can be troublesome based on my past experience. We are still hanging on to that very desire to experience life's pleasures and awards, which can lead to suffering and confusion. The method known as "Self-Enquiry" by Ramana Maharshi is the quickest from my understanding.

I love Lord Buddha in every aspect, but sometimes I feel Buddha's way is too noble for the world. It's really difficult to make everyone a true Buddhist, as the world is full of difficulties, and humans are full of greed, hatred and stubbornness. And we keep fighting, hating, lying, killing and seeking sexual pleasure, wealth and power. However, I believe that Buddha's dharma will never fade out. It's simple the truth of life. The richer and more powerful we get, the sooner we realize that everything is impermanent and all of our fights for money and power are useless. We spent too much time seeking happiness but didn't know that happiness is inside ourself. Lord Buddha found it out 25 centuries ago, and his wise teachings are still relevant today and in the future.

And this is exactly why we recite sutra. Through the sutra, Buddha will give us blessing and change the circumstances of our life, which in turn make our life easier. When I first started practicing Buddhism, I thought people were crazy when they said sutra can make my life different. Now that I’ve been reciting sutra for 2 years, I can honestly say my life has been changed! People around me somehow are all nice people now, and I couldn’t tank Buddha more! The secret is, you have to help yourself in this religion, no one else can help you. How you help yourself is reciting sutra! I wish you a very enlightened life!

The reason there are so many obstacles and difficulties in our lives is because we have too much karma build up on us from this life and many many past lives. The karma is created from bad behaviors and bad thinkings. That’s why Buddha says “every thinking creates karma” so just count the times you talk negatively towards other people, do anything that make people unhappy, or even have negative thoughts will creates bad karmas. If you think this way, you realize that people have obstacles in their life for a reason. It simply because what you put out into this world, you get. Reciting sutra is like an eraser to a whiteboard, every time you recite, you erase some of the bad karma on you, and that’s how sutra can help you have a better life!

Recently I've picked up an interest in meditation, and thus I have had to confront its religious roots. While Buddhism comes with several unappealing and superstitious claims, it's not dogmatic about it, and overall Buddhism is more like an ancient self help tool, or psychology, than religion. It's the only world religion worthy of some respect and consideration. The philosophical part of it resembles Greek stoicism much enough that one might wonder if there were some kind of cultural exchange going on a couple of thousand years ago.

Buddhism teaches that there is no actual Self, as most people in the western world believe. The Buddha taught that we we think of as "ourself" is really just a continuous flux of physical and mental forces. And apparently it is the cause of all our suffering. So Buddhism teaches you how free yourself from this attachment by following the Noble Eightfold Path.

And that bcums a universe and an existence in which love can not survive, nor reach. That is a universe which is left void of God's eternal love. Thus, left with mere generic universal consciousness. A universal eternal state where the richness of the individual unique Soul is dead, and void; Left only with a endless repetitive existence of dead, empty, universal consciousness at its pinnacle(Enlightenment). A never ending eternity of existence separated from God's grace and God's unending love. In God's grace, each and every Beings uniqueness exist with absolute dignity. We are so precious. Don't believe the lies of any other path, than the path of Jesus Christ.

This is the best explanation I have seen of the truths which are the essential formula for enlightenment. In our modern world of drugs and iPhones this is more important than ever, but so few really grasp the simple message here and practice it. It works! I always has worked. We owe a debt to Siddharta for putting it together and should honor him by actually practicing these truths. There are many out there who are trying meditation etc, which is a joy and essential to the process, but if one grasps one concept about happiness it is the noble truths and 8 fold path that will help you evolve into a Buddha. It is all so simple. Don't complicate it. Continue to study and review and practice these basics and you will find nirvana every day and live a more joyful life. Also, the first area of attachment most can't see because we are so far away now from the reality of our humanity is that all our practice and joy is built on a foundation of a healthy body, and to build this foundation correctly please use a whole plant food diet that science has revealed without question will lead to healing and freedom from suffering major diseases and mental afflictions!

Plus there is also many atheist Buddhists within the religion considering the fact that Buddhism doesn't really have any gods. Milk Man Life is so beautiful yet so brutally painful that is the absurdity of it, why isn't the universe perfect? Why is not everyone happy? War, torture, injustice, lose, pain. The europeans saw existence from a Christian perspective with a God entity responsible for everything good and bad, they saw bad, made no sense and ditched god and spirituality, and some: even morality as an excuse. The Easter view is different, God is everything ,and is not outside of the universe, there is porpuse, there is a meaning to it, the order of things, and the divine essence of existence is in every living thing. There is a reason to exists and that is order and light of love. That is what i got from my studies of eastern religion. For the weak spirited the mind is all there is , the animal instincs is all there is, because that is all that we were, animals,we evolved to be morally conscious, so there is a porpuse, otherwise good things would not exists. There is Beautity there is horror, that is what the chinese call duality and that same patter exists in everything.

As an atheist, I think The world would be a huge amount kinder, if only the philosophy put forward by Buddha was followed by more people… instead we have the defensive, oppressive “philosophies” that rule the world today. One might argue that their religion is no less enlightening than Buddhism, but it’s clear to see that the entire perspective of Buddhism is different. It’s incredibly grounded in reality and human conscience. Which cannot be said for any of the most popular religions.

I appreciate what the school of life has done here, but although suffering (samsara) is a cornerstone of buddhist philosophy, it is not the heart of it. The heart of it is love and compassion; the idea that we all share this life and that we are all inherently good and awakened (we are all buddha). The existence and acceptance of suffering is more so a truth that buddhism realizes.

I stumbled across a sutra because of my curiosity about some phenomena that happened in my life. Decades ago I met an old guy who made my finger moved on its own that made me searching. Then I tried to learn meditation on my own cuz I usually won't believe things that i heard or read(skeptic) unless I experience it myself. Because of that, I began to receive dreams that came true (I seldom dream), and also I began to see things that weren't there although not everytime and feel vibrations on religious items (some religious item have higher vibration than others that is why I'm so interested in Buddhism - I believed in other faith before). After reading the sutra and tried a few meditation, I found myself able to heal a knee problem by touching ( a friend lifted a small fridge on a Friday morning but the pain made him unable to sleep). Although it isn't mentioned in the sutra but it says about how higher vibration during meditation will prevent other beings from disturbing. I used to be scared a lot of the unseen but by being able to maintain a certain state of mind, they don't bother me as much. The problem is the feeling of being "used" because I get to be asked by people to heal from flue, headache, knee, tennis elbow, sore throat, back pain, foot pain etc. At first I felt happy, but now I realized that all these are not real. People are usually interested in the fruit instead of the wisdom behind them. In the sutra it is being warned no to expose these because it will prevent you from getting the higher goal.

Please correct me if I am wrong: I believe the statement that Nirvana "refers to the blowing out of the flame of desire" is actually incorrect. As far as I have learned thus far, Nirvana actually refers to the transcendence (and therefore extinguishing) of ones connection to the material, mental, and emotional desires of human life. It is as though one who achieves Nirvana has shed this world and transfers to one which is unknowable and indescribable since it would be impossible to describe that which no one has experienced, nor has any relation to what we have experienced. But that is simply what I have learned. Wonderful video though, as usual.

There's not an "I" who is transferred to another world. Nirvana is the extinction of the flames of craving which are fueled by ignorance, hatred and greed. Ignorance of what? Of the impermanence of conditioned phenomena; of the unsatisfactoriness of life; and of the illusion of a permanent and essential self. Nirvana is long-lasting peace in the here & now; a peace without conditions, and which does not depend on anything external. Kind regards!

Buddhism is separated into two groups; Philosophy and Religion. Buddhism started out as a philosophy, then some people wanted to jazz it up with the supernatural and added chanting and reincarnation. You can understand and follow Buddhism without getting into the religious aspects. The best thing about Buddhism, it allows you to see the truth. And studying chemistry and physics doesn't hurt either.

actually it's a misguided opinion. reincarnation is the core of Buddhist philosophy, so much that there's no Buddhism without Reincarnation and Karma and they aren't simple fancy ideas as we tend to think.. Buddhism disagrees with vedic atman or god but the more you study both philosophies more you learn their similarities. in fact Buddhism seems to be the inevitable evolution of vedic literature. Therefore Vedic knowledge at its peak .

Buddhism as a religion only makes sense as any other religion; a leap of faith. Buddha never called himself God, but if he did, I would not believe him anymore than someone saying Jesus was the son of God, or that Allah speaks to Mohammad. Or that Hindu's believe Cows or elephants are Gods. I do not believe this and look as it as nonsense. However, pretty much any religion has some kernels of usefulness. If you look on the internet "Did Buddha teach reincarnation", you will find many hits saying that Buddha did not teach reincarnation. Buddha did teach "No Beliefs". Meaning you don't have to take someone word. Reincarnation refutes "No Beliefs".

Adrienne: agree with you basically. Most religions have some very good philosophy's. I just will not "believe" in supernatural thinking. That requires faith, a leap of faith. I personally believe we need stop supernatural thinking. If you accept one supernatural thinking, then why not accept another and another. In my experience, most people who believe in supernatural thinking are not logical thinkers.

Im a buddhist and from some buddhist books I've read, there IS God who created nature and place what we called Earth. 😁 Buddha himself said that he is only a teacher to all creatures, both including dead or living creatures, from all dimensions, they who need to be guided from their sufferings. What I have learned from suffering is that it forces our minds to realize that our bodies are stuck in the present moment and in the present conditions. As soon as we feel suffering in the present moment, our minds are forced to tend to the intense feeling that we are having. This is true of intensely pleasant moments too but, unlike pleasant moments, we all wish to flee unpleasant moments and that is how we learn that our body can only live in the present moment. This forces us to cultivate mindfulness and cultivating mindfulness leads to nirvana. We will get there eventually through suffering but we can make more efficient use of our time in this life by also cultivating mindfulness intentionally, when there is not necessarily any suffering that we are forced into experiencing.

Actually I believe Buddhism cherishes life more or equal to religion. You cannot boil a philosophy down to a conclusion, only break it into its component parts, as these things are very complex. Buddhism shows its followers how to learn from each and every experience. Saying something like "that would be a waste of time" would be looked down upon. It's true Buddhist do not ask for much hahaha. It's almost nothing, but wanting things doesn't make a person a bad Buddhist necessarily. What do you mean when you say Buddhism devalues life?
