Just started powder coating with this Eastwood gun and was constantly trying to reduce the powder flow by playing with the air pressure regulator what is not an easy thing to do while pressing the gun trigger, the power button and fiddling with the pressure. First thing I wanted to do is converting the power button into a switch, but your modifications seem to be perfectly addressing my issues with this gun. Thank you for your great input.

For anyone watching this vid.. I just received my Eastwood dual voltage powder coating system and they have updated the design. The blue cap that covers the electro does not screw off! I was able to still do the mod using the 1” pvc coupler but I had to use my lathe to remove enough material to use it in the way it is being shown in this video. Instead of the tip of the ballon, I used a small rubber band and was able to accomplish the same functionality.

I just did the tip and fluidizer modifications to my dual voltage gun. The tip mod makes it shoot so much better. The powder transfer is amazing now. I have a newer gun and had to bore the 1" pvc coupler out to 1.395" on my lathe and it is a tight enough fit over the glued on tip where i dont need an o-ring. My only concern is the build up of powder inside the new nozzle. When spraying powder on a top surface from above there is a chance for it to fall out and land on the part. As far as the air stone fluidizer mod, i dont really seem to like it. I picked up a stone at a local pet store that is just like the one you have, but it seems to only work when there is alot of powder in the cup. When it gets low i have to really shake the gun to get any flow out of it.
@WillowsWorldofDIY

I'm glad to hear that you did my modifications and could see a big difference in the way the gun shoots and a big improvement with the powder transfer. I shake out or tap the side of PVC coupling with the gun pointed down away from the piece I'm shooting to remove any powder build up once in a while, while I am shooting, especially if its a large piece. Sorry to hear that the air stone didn't work out for you. Not all air stones are the same, I always check them with compressed air to make sure they are putting out air 360 degrees. I also recommend hammering a small nail through the air stone. That really seemed to help mine flow easier. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching and Subscribing!

Great video man, keep up the great work! I'm excited for the tumbler giveaway next week! Is it possible to reuse powder after it has been used with the gun? Or is it considered contaminated because it hit the ground?
@WillowsWorldofDIY
@WillowsWorldofDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bandit! You can reuse the powder if you have a powder reclaim booth. However with my setup the powder would be considered contaminated by any dirt on the floor and in the booth, plus any contaminants that are floating around in the air. Thanks for watching! Stay tuned!

Do you need the water separator and the inline filter so close to gun? Could they be placed at the compressor. Im using a pancake compressor from Eastwood
@WillowsWorldofDIY
@WillowsWorldofDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, The closer the water separator/inline filter are to the gun the better it will work. Pancake compressors usually have a lot of moisture in the compressed air, that compressed air cools as it travels through the air hose causing the water to condensate inside the air hose. So it's best to have the Water separator and inline filter as close to the gun as possible. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching!

What about modifying the hopper to receive an additional air stone fed thru the open port on the regulator to aid the fluidity of the powder continuously
@WillowsWorldofDIY
@WillowsWorldofDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Well you probably could but it won't work the same as a Professional gun because of the Eastwood gun design. Eastwood gun pushes air into the hoper to fluidize the powder and pushes the powder out of the tip of the gun. A Professional gun has a fluidizing air line that runs to the hoper to fluidize the powder, the hoper has a vent tube to allow the air to escape the hoper after it fluidizes the powder, when you pull the trigger a Professional gun sucks the fluidized powder out of the hoper instead of pushing the powder out of the hoper like the Eastwood gun. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching!

What’s the copper ground wire for in the item listed for the gun? And how I remove the place tip cover on the front of the gun?
@WillowsWorldofDIY
@WillowsWorldofDIY 4 жыл бұрын
The copper grounding wire is for grounding parts like tumblers cups where you don't have a good place to attach the ground you can shape the grounding wire to fit inside the cups to ground them. The plastic tip cover on mine just unscrewed, some people that have a newer style gun said that they were able to leave the tip cover on and either bored out the 1" coupling to 1.395" and didn't use O-rings or used a 1-1/2" coupling with O-rings. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching!

Mine wasn't glued but I would try to cut it down the side and use a flathead screwdriver to try and pry it open and break it loose. I don't use the gun in its stock form since I did these modifications so I wouldn't worry about cutting that piece off. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching!

great video thank you. I have this same powder coating gun and i am new to this. I used it today and it dumped so much powder. I will do all the mods and get back to you. i am having a lot of trouble with Faraday cage effect if you have any tips. great video
@WillowsWorldofDIY
@WillowsWorldofDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! If the bottle is more than 1/2 way full with powder it will dump a lot of powder out. The faraday cage effect is usually caused because there isn't a good ground. The grounding wire that comes with the gun is a small gauge wire, I recommend installing a copper grounding rod with a 8 gauge ground wire to ground the parts you are shooting. Here is a couple tip you can try without installing a grounding rod, 1st make sure that you are prebaking your parts at 450 degrees for 15-30 minuets (if I'm have problems powder coating parts due to faraday cage effect I blow all the powder off and bake the parts to discharge any built up electrical charge), 2nd hold the guns electrode close enough to your part to cause it to spark to the grounded part you are coating (This will also help discharge the parts you're shooting), 3rd shooting parts hot will eliminate the faraday cage problem but leaves you with 0 room for error because the powder melts as soon as it contacts the hot part (I don't recommend shooting hot if you're a beginner). I hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching!
@padraic7777
@padraic7777 3 жыл бұрын
@@WillowsWorldofDIY thanks... that is the best information i have found searching all week for info on this, plenty of people explain what faraday cage is, but not how to fix the problem. I was advised to fill the cup to 3/4 and in doing so I used well over 1/2 a pound of powder on a set of 4 toy wheels 6 inches wide. I will be doing the gun modifications over the coming days and getting rid of the cage effect would be great. with the modification to the gun and preheating i wont have so much powder coming out and hopefully the cover will be better. The powder here ( sydney) costs $36 per pound bag for basic up to $120 for superchrome, so you can see i cant afford to waste it. Thank you for all the tips
@WillowsWorldofDIY
@WillowsWorldofDIY 3 жыл бұрын
WOW! I can't believe those powder prices! With prices like that you definitely don't want to waste any. My modifications to the gun will definitely help you save powder. I don't have a set pressure that I run because every powder shoots differently but I would recommend turning the pressure down low and make small adjustments till the powder start covering well without spitting or dumping powder everywhere. If you are shooting a lot of parts or large parts with my upgrades some powder will buildup inside the coupling causing it to spit a little, I usually keep a clean container to tap the side of the coupling in to clear out the buildup, and that way you can reuse that powder in the container. I'm planning on shooting a tips and tricks video soon and I will talk about how to judge powder thickness while shooting and the way the raw powder is supposed to look before baking to achieve a professional quality coating. If you have any more questions in the future feel free to reach out to me.

Thanks for the tips man awesome 👌🏼. I don't own a eastwood but Will this coupling work on a harbor freight gun?
@WillowsWorldofDIY
@WillowsWorldofDIY 2 жыл бұрын
I don't own a harbor freight gun so I'm not sure what size of coupling will fit it, but if you measure the tip of your gun and find a coupling that will fit it, it should work the same as my Eastwood gun. This modification makes a big difference in the way the guns shoots so I definitely recommend trying it and couplings only cost about $1 so it's worth trying. I hope this is helpful. @WillowsWorldofDIY
@WillowsWorldofDIY 3 жыл бұрын
The gun modifications in this Video will help the adhesion of the powder 1st & 2nd coat without hot flocking. With this gun modified i shoot the 2nd coat the same as the 1st coat, I keep the electric on the high setting 25,000kv and I get good adhesion without staring. You can see me shoot 1st & 2nd coat with this modified gun in my video (custom powder coated demolition ranch tumblers kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnendWeZnrOokKc ) Also if you hold the tip of the gun close to the grounding clamp connection and let it briefly ark to the grounding clamp it will usually help the charged powder particles adhere better to the part being coated. Link to a good air regulator? Also, every time I go to spray the gun it spits out more powder then adjusts to the regulator Setting. Any idea why it doesn’t maintain the pressure I set it at and not push a lot more air out when I squeeze the trigger?
@WillowsWorldofDIY
@WillowsWorldofDIY 3 жыл бұрын
There is links to some regulators in the description of this video. If the bottle is more than 1/2 way full with powder it will just spit out a bunch of powder, so make sure you only fill the bottle 1/2 way. The more air you add the more powder will come out. I always start with my regulator turned all the way down and slowly add pressure till I get a nice flow of powder coming out of the gun. if you're not using air stones you should probably be in the 6-10 lbs of air pressure range. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching!

It might be too large as sometimes only air comes out of the gun. I often have to shake the heck out of the gun to get powder to come out (all the time basically).

The air stones won't work with a hole drilled in the supply tube. I recommend putting a piece of electrical tape around the tube where the drill hole is to try and plug it so the air will be forced through the air stone.

Hey I have a question I know you said you don't like having to press the button to send the electrical charge. Can't you just take the button out of the equation and hardwire it so when you turn it on is electrified? Or did you not say that in the video just because you know there are people out there that will do that modification stand in a puddle. Holding apart while licking the end of the powder coat gun😁? I am serious about the 1st part of the question though.
@WillowsWorldofDIY
@WillowsWorldofDIY 3 жыл бұрын
The answer is yes!😂 You can eliminate the switch completely, but it will increase the chances of someone getting shocked. I have shocked myself numerous times while powder coating over the years, the shocks were enough to wake you up but not enough to cause any damage. I would NOT recommend this modification to anyone with a heart pump or heart monitor. I have also heard some people say that you can attach the switch to the handle of the gun and they use their thumb to activate the Switch while their fingers pull the trigger. I haven't tried this but it seems like it would work and free up your other hand. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching!

Everything will work except for the 1" PVC coupling. Other subscribers have said that they bored out the 1" coupling to 1.395" to fit the new gun. If you don't have the tools to bore it out you can just use a 1-1/2" PVC coupling instead of the 1" PVC coupling. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching!

Is the dual voltage worth the extra money? Do you use the higher voltage?
@WillowsWorldofDIY
@WillowsWorldofDIY 4 жыл бұрын
The original Eastwood powder coating gun output is 11,000v. The duel voltage output is 15,000v and 25,000v. The professional Nordson and Ericson guns output is 0v-100,000v. So I personally think the Eastwood duel voltage gun is under powered at only 25,000v. The only reason you want the lower voltage is to prevent staring when shooting a Top coat over a base coat. I usually always shoot with the duel voltage gun on the high 25,000v setting for base coats and top coats, and I haven't had any problems with it staring top coats at that voltage. However if you are looking to save money on the original 11,000v gun you can shoot the base coats and top coats hot to achieve the same thickness of powder coating as the higher voltage guns, but shooting hot leave you with 0% margins of error, so that depends on your skill level. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching!

I Think the Duel Voltage gun is prefect for someone new to powder coating and will shoot a decent coating. My modifications to the gun will give you more Control of the powder, slowing it down and keeping it in close proximity to the electrode allows the powder to build more of a charge which gives you better adhesion and saving powder. The results are a thicker coating that is close to a professional gun coating. I'm happy to help if you ever have any questions.

My Eastwood dual Voltage gun is 2 years old now. use it alot. But am I the only one that gets Shocked by this gun?? and it hurts. It will come out to me about 10 inches. It will zap me like 20 times in a few seconds!! I try to stay clear of my metal when powdering.. and even with leather gloves it will at time still Shock me. and I do have a 8 feet copper ground rod in ground .with a #10 braided wire with Alligator clamp on it to also clamp to my work. So why does it still shock me.. You can see the Electice fire come out of time and get me.. LOL I had to be shocked anyway..
@WillowsWorldofDIY
@WillowsWorldofDIY 3 жыл бұрын
My gun only shocks me from about 3 inches away with my opposing hand in front of the gun or near the parts or grounding clamp. You can definitely feel it and it does hurt. My personal opinion is that the problem with this gun is that this gun has a metal handle that is grounded and when you're holding it with your bare hand it grounds your body and allows the electricity to pass through your body. I haven't done it to my gun yet but I would like to coat the metal handle and trigger with a plasti dip or at least wrap it with electrical tape to prevent that shock when handling the hanging wires to move the parts into a good shooting position. I learned how to shoot 21 years ago with a professional Nordson gen 1 gun that had a metal handle and we had this same problem. Plastic dip on the handle and trigger is what fixed that problem. New Nordson professional guns all have plastic handles because of this problem. Good job on the grounding rod and #10 braided wire. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching!

I just hate to spend $800 for a more exspensive one. but see some people turning the part with there hand , while there powdering..

I have never used the harbor freight gun, so I don't know which one is better. I would go with the one that has more power, the Eastwood dual voltage gun has 15,000-25,000 KV. I can't find any harbor freight gun output voltage numbers on their website. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching!

By any chance do you do work on the side? Or can you refer me to a company that's not overly expensive.
@WillowsWorldofDIY
@WillowsWorldofDIY 2 жыл бұрын
I do a little side work. What are you wanting to get powder coated and what color? Do you already have the powder that you want to use for the parts you want coated? Most powder coating shops that I know of have a minimum charge of at least $125 and some are more than that. So powder coating just a few small parts can be expensive. Anything that is to large for me to coat at home I take to (Absolute Powder Coating) www.powdercoatingabq.com they are the best powder coating shop in my area, very professional and have won some awards for the quality of their work. Ask for the owner Chris and tell him I sent you, he will probably give you a discount if he has the colors you want in stock. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching!

Willow’s World of DIY hey. So I took a 1” coupling and used a Dre mel to sand out the inside so it will fit. Did everything you did in this video accept the ball filter. I though the other filter would be good enough? It said filters oil, water, and everything else. I’ll be shooting later see how it all goes.
@WillowsWorldofDIY
@WillowsWorldofDIY 4 жыл бұрын
It should work great. The reason I use 2 filters is because powder manufacturers say not to add the leftover powder in your gun after you are done shooting back into a container with fresh powder if it has any moisture in it. It's just a precaution.
