So i used this for the 1st time. AMAZING. The only thing i would add is if you leave it on the panel to dry and then want to paint it the thick etch does not come off completely. I re - applied the etch with a scuff pad then immediately washed the panel down with Acetone.*** Important*** Make sure the panel gets neutralized with pre- or Acetone right after re-activation or else the epoxy will never dry and you will have issues. Trust me.. I would also da 80 grit metal after that to start fresh for Epoxy or fillers. Acid+ paint like water + oil do not mix .

Right from SPI which applies in using this product or any products like this. The ONLY acid cleaners SPI recommends is Opsho, PPG and DuPont metal preps as long as their instructions are followed to a tee. Use any other system you want, just do us a favor and use no SPI over them. There can be NO shortcuts for good results. Ospho, is a great product for automotive if used right, we give scare warnings because we want people to call so we can make sure they know how to neutralize it, so no problems will arise. Only one way to use and here it is: Use as needed and apply as many times as needed to get the spot clean, let dry and leave for months if you want, don’t matter. To neutralize the Ospho MUST be wet, so if dry, re-wet with itself and let set one or two minutes and with a clean rag and water, wipe off like washing the car and then dry. Next, then da car with 80 grit, clean with 700-1 wax and grease remover, let set an hour and coat with an epoxy.

"I don't own a piece of nice clothing". Yeah. It's usually with the decision to renew my wardrobe that edges me towards a project because clothes that last me years under normal use are usually trashed after a project. But that's a good thing.

I know this is an older video, but will fast etch be good for removing light rust and really old, worn paint? I'm trying to do some rust clean up and repair in a tight area that is difficult to reach and thought maybe this would be the perfect thing to clean it all up with before going over it with some rust encapsulator plus

I am working in my engine bay around the battery tray and brake fluid reservoir where rust has formed. It's not heavy rust, more like surface rust. There are painted areas that have original paint I need to preserve. It would be nearly impossible to mask these areas off, and inevitably will have Fast Etch run-off. I also have very tight areas where I will be unable to agitate them with scotch brite, and in a couple areas, even with a small wire brush. First, will the Fast Etch harm the original paint where it ran off and dried? And second, will it still remove the unagitated areas of rust? Would several applications of the Etch solution remove the rust in those inaccessible areas? Thirdly, can I prime over the dried Fast Etch residue? And finally, will the dried residue wash off those surrounding areas that have original paint, with water after the new paint is applied and cured? Thanks for any feed back. Jon H.

@deankay4434

+Kyle Hackney I have the same problem, garage is full, too much equipment and lost big garage when we moved. To answer your question, strip the panel with chemical stripper or blasting, then apply Fast Etch, wipe to cover, let dry. Now, cover the vehicle with plastic from the home improvement store and anchor with what you have handy, sand bags work great as sharp stuff will tear when windy. I did this for my 67C10, one panel at a time. Have time, just hurt bad so can't go like I used too. The Fast Etch will leave a decent film on bare metal, but wipe down again if needed. I use it on my large MIG wire spool so it does not rust while sitting. Lost one $60 spool that way due to humidity inside, no more. The Fast Etch did not cause any issues when welding with it months later. Extra spools are vacuum bagged due to good price.

quick question (should be easy)...So if I use this on a stripped bare metal panel. Then clean with pre...can I then use body filler before priming or do I have to seal with epoxy primer first ? Thanks EASTWOOD !!!
@deankay4434
@deankay4434 5 жыл бұрын
Robert Arco Yes, stripping the panel either blast media, sanding or chemical, the Fast Etch rubbed in for 30 minutes wet, needs removed with "PRE" paint cleaner or acetone. If the panel is to be finished, check with your supplier of base. As epoxy primer becomes popular, like SPI Epoxy, any phosphate left behind is bad. Only an acid based product can re-activate an acid based product for removal. SPI recommends Ospho, wet, clean, re-apply and remove with their cleaner, but many use acetone. Sand area with 80 grit, clean with cleaner & tack, then apply epoxy primer as it is water proof. The SPI has a 7 day open window and poly filler applied during this time will bond with the epoxy. Once filler is sanded to smooth. re-coat with epoxy. If finished with filler (And you are that good), The SPI epoxy can be thinned and used as a sealer, prior to base coat & clear. Just be careful not to leave the product on areas to be painted. I used it inside a trucks bedside that had welded area's, heated areas for shrinking or stretching, but need protection, but not epoxy. Had to spray some areas, but impossible for others spots. Best to do something for areas behind the finish other than relying on a rust-proofing material, like the oily, yellow waxy stuff.

the spray society. You never got an answer from Eastwood because they want you to buy their expensive stuff when you can just as easily buy it from Home Depot for a cheaper price. Buy the self etcher from home depot (called Concrete & Metal Prep), it's a green chemical that you can easily see through the barely visible plastic bottle. This same chemical is also used to etch the concrete floor on a garage when people paint their floor. Do the work on your car metal panel similar to like this guy does it. Spray the metal part you're working on then rub it around the whole metal with a sponge or cotton rag to distribute the etching evenly otherwise you may get drips streaks from the fluid sliding down the metal piece. Repeat the process if necessary to ensure the metal gets etched properly for a several minutes then wipe it dry. Then clean the panel with acetone poured onto a rag. If you're going to primer it several days later or several weeks later, leave it as is after the steps I described but hopefully indoor because moisture from rainy days or cold nights may still create surface rust. There is no point of doing all the work like these guys on the video just to repeat the process all over again; at least get to the epoxy primer step if it won't get painted for several months or over a year. Once you are ready to primer use acetone & dampen a cotton rag or those blue roll paper shop towels to wipe off the the metal surface. I use an epoxy primer instead of some etching primer. Let the epoxy primer dry 1 or more days, scuff it with a green or burgundy scuff pad then primer with a regular primer like high build primer. 1 or more days later, sand the primer with 400, 500, or 600 grit sand paper, then paint it. Honestly I painted a fender after only using epoxy primer & scuffing it. 2 years later the paint still holds nicely.

@@johnnyjohn8073 Agreed.. I could not get the film off after drying for weeks before epoxy. I had to reapply etch with a red scotch pad then wipe with acetone to get that off before paint.

@@eastwoodco, you might want to change the description then. The description claims it promotes adhesion for priming which is telling people they can primer over it. And if you're supposed to clean it off before primer then I'd assume to just use Ammonia that'll work just as good and just as fast. Then spray etching primer directly after because leaving a bare metal car just sitting around is just laziness and pointless (unless you want that Bare Metal Look which is actually what I'm doing right now on my '86 Dodge Ram D100 Custom. I'm coating it with Boild Linseed Oil to protect it from rust and it can last years if applied with heat and correctly).

My questions are; I live in a Pacific Northwest coastal town.....I have a 98 Suburban that I towed and unloaded a boat into salt water. Even though I washed it after every use the rear of the frame has a medium coating of rust on it. Will this product work on the frame? Can I use it with a compressor sprayer? Afterwards if I can use it and I finish the cleaning I plan on taking it to the dealer who will be doing a full undercoating. Suggestions!!!
