Great video, for those concerned about scammers, if you are selling an item with a serial number, make sure it's visible in at least one of your pictures. That way if you have a return, you can verify that they are returning the same item that you shipped them.

Your video is a huge effort, great attention to us new sellers, great gratitude and good health!!!! I am a housewife from Kazakhstan, Central Asia, and I really want to earn money at home, and so I found this site on eBay, and you know, I liked the site’s policy, its support for new sellers. But this is not enough to start unless you listen to an experienced person in this matter. And so I listened to all the videos with you, it’s a lot of work, so many tips, advice, lessons, you convinced me how to do advertising! I wish your family to be happy and healthy!!!! Thank you!

I was searching for something a few years ago. It was an article of clothing and I was just looking for a replacement for something I had worn out. Item specifics helps out buyers looking for hard to find items. Maybe. Country of origin is one of those fields. And materials. I like databases so as a seller it's no big deal. I think it helps me that a lot of sellers hate item specifics.

- use as many characters in your title as possible - clean and clear pictures, identify defects so buyer has no surpirses - list in the correct category (watch out for "list one like this") - do the item specifics, then copy them into the description for even more details - condition notes: again making sure no surprises - good listings sell &b stay sold! so be sure your description is done well so the buyer knows what to expect - offer returns (for most businesses) because if scammers wanted to, they can just say the item wasn't as described - he actually has a video on shipping charges that goes deeper into it, just watch that one - most are buy it now listings thx for the video !

Amazing breakdown! Tells me I am on the right path. I hate all those item specifics but go through them. Most common comment in my feedback is “Better than described”. I tell and photo down to the tiniest flaw. I use calculated shipping because my items are boxed before listing so I have accurate measurements and weights. We are committed to reusing boxes and shipping materials to lessen our impact on the environment. But that’s my business model. I hate selling items and then scrambling for materials to ship with after it’s sold. That works for us. We are also booksellers so that is an easy shipping category. Recently moved into more categories but tend to stay in vintage and collectibles. I am now thinking of accepting returns. I hate it when’s buyer tries to scam me and will usually take action immediately and take the time to call eBay. It’s amazing how doing that can get the case closed in my favor while on the phone with eBay. They will look at that buyers feedback and return rate to see that the particular buyer makes a habit out of it. A good number of times I check back to see that the buyers account has been closed by eBay after my call. Harsh? Maybe. But no one will have to go through what I did (until that scammer opens a new account 🙄) We have been on eBay since 2002 and boy how eBay has changed. We just roll with it but it’s definitely a buyers market now. I long for the good old days lol.

Good video. A few points - "Free" delivery is said to make a difference in the Ebay "visibility" algorithm & could influence clicks & sales. Only a really big seller would be able to prove/disprove this. Secondly, listing as an auction may get you higher sale prices for an "in-demand" item. But if there's some kind of bidding war triggered. it's one thing for a buyer to bid to an insanely high price. And another, to actually get them to pay. "Did I really bid that much" - in the cold light of day. Which is why I almost never sell as auctions
@TheChaChingKing4 ай бұрын
Perhaps only a big seller could verify if free shipping makes a difference. But, eBay allows the search to include only FREE SHIPPING listings. That alone would give it a boost in overall clicks and sales. I totally agree on when to run auctions. I've covered it in several videos. In my opinion, there's only a few reasons for me to run an auction. I know it a VERY high demand item with NO supply, I'm clearing out old inventory and maximizing my profits doesn't matter, or I'm trying to establish for myself what the value of an item might be and I'm not concerned if it doesn't sell for much. I also rarely run auctions. It's usually not worth it.
@daffyduk774 ай бұрын
@@TheChaChingKing All true. One of the most basic lessons newbie sellers face is what to price things at. Initially, a seller's low reputation count would deter those buyers who don't understand the Ebay return set-up, so would get lower prices unless they can wait long enough. And determining an item's likely selling price (varying dependent on the need to shift it/raise the cash) takes time & experience. Even an experienced seller moving from selling widgets he knows, to gizmos he doesn't, can experience this. Many's the time I've had buyers practically biting my hand off. One way to avoid this is (if you get the chance) immediately after listing, seeing how many watchers are building up, & adjusting accordingly. And there's always the ability to send offers to "watching" buyers

Seems like the google angle is that Google can easily figure out what the subject of the picture is and then to include the image with meta data in search and image search.
@TheChaChingKing Жыл бұрын
That's exactly what the angle is. The good news is that the Google image search is rapidly progressing beyond the need for a high-contrast background. I never noticed much of a difference in Google traffic to my items either way. But, I think that it is just about a thing of the past.

Shipping is, without a doubt, the scariest part of selling on eBay. But, one of the things I like to remind new sellers is that shipping isn't scary to anyone who is already selling. They may not like it. They might find it time consuming. But none of them are afraid of it. So, experience should absolutely take away the fear. Start with things you know won't get broken and are easy to package, measure and weigh. The video I'm editing now covers the 5 most common shipping questions. Maybe it will help some, too.

One of my biggest pet peeves when perusing eBay is the ubiquitous floor pic. It is not appealing to know that the item was pictured/placed on one of the dirtiest surfaces in any house (where everyone walks and things are spilled, dust, pets etc). It also let's me know that the seller couldn't even be bothered to simply place the item on a table, piece of paper, or piece of fabric to take a picture of the item. This makes me wonder what else the seller doesn't care about (honest description, shipping, or customer care).
@TheChaChingKing2 жыл бұрын
Very true. Having a nice clean picture can easily distinguish your item from the others.
@lajohnson19672 жыл бұрын
😂 Most people taking pics on their beautiful wood floors have clearer floors than those creepy mannequins or crumble clothes on a hanger. Germs are everywhere and If it bothers you that much, wash the item immediately when received, which you should be doing anyway.

I never thought of it that way. I grew up in a German household, so we always wore slippers in the house (Hausschuhe). I have always pictured the floor to be clean because outside shoes are not allowed. Given that most Americans and UK households allow shoes in the house, I can understand who you can get to that opinion. I will take your advice on board and stop photographing my goods on the floor.

Thanks for the great advice. Any errors I can avoid making sounds good to me. I’m sure I will make enough on my own.

Thank you so much for this great information! You said something towards the end that I was wondering about: when I list my item,: let’s say somebody wants to buy it, can I choose whether to sell it to them, or can I wait for somebody else, what are my options when it comes to selling to people who show interest?
@TheChaChingKing Жыл бұрын
If they make an offer, then you have a choice. If they buy it outright, it's sold. But I do check the feedback buyers leave other sellers with virtually every offer I get. If they use negative feedback like a weapon, I don't do business with them

What is your listing to successful sales ratio roughly? And how do you handle 'send offers'? Back in to this after a many years and seems I'm listing more for fewer sales. Thank you
@TheChaChingKing Жыл бұрын
I'm not entirely sure I understand. Are you asking me my sell-through rate? Like, what percentage of my listings sell every 90 days? If so, roughly 30%. I list a lot of rare, one-off items. And I list them at a higher price. So, my sell-through rate is lower as a result. But, my average sale price last year was close to $60. My business is intentionally more long-tail. I accept offers. Two reasons. First, I get more sales as a result. But that isn't the number one reason. My number one reason for accepting offers is that I get a chance to see the feedback that a potential buyer makes BEFORE I do business with them. I recently had someone make an offer that left at least 50% negative feedback! Ugly stuff. And I had an opportunity to see that before she bought something from me. Does that help?

Hello! I love and appreciate your videos so much. Thank you! Can I ask you a question? What category would you put vintage books in? Please let me know. Thanks!
@TheChaChingKing Жыл бұрын
Depending on the books, this is usually where I would list them. Go to: Books, Movies & Music > Books & Magazines > Antiquarian & Collectible

It's not always easy. But once you've created the account, the process becomes repetitive. It will get easier and easier with each listing

New subscriber here. My wife and I have had initial conversations of trying reselling as a side hustle (We have 2 kids, coach sports and we're both teachers so free time isn't exactly on our side until summer time!) She wants to sell solely on FBMP to avoid the hassle of shipping (we have sold things on FBMP over the past few years, but not much volume to be considered a side hustle). After watching a few of your eBay tutorials I'm having second thoughts and think eBay is the way to go. A few questions for you: 1) Is it really viable to start up a small reselling business in the current state of the economy? (We would be starting an eBay account from scratch with not much inventory) 2) Is it more beneficial to have more places to sell, (FBMP, eBay, Poshmark, Etsy, etc.) or is that too big of a headache to handle when starting out? 3) Not a question, but a big thank you for posting these educational videos on reselling. I have probably watched 5-6 videos the past few days and your attention to detail is really refreshing. Thanks for the great content!

Thanks so much for the kind words! I wouldn't try to sell on a bunch of platforms. FBMP and ebay wound be plenty. As far as whether or not it's a good time, given the state of the economy, I'd argue it's a great time. More than ever, the younger generation is looking for sustainable fashion. People are looking for cheaper items and good seconds hand items are often a more affordable choice. Finally, virtually everyone is becoming more and more accustomed to shopping from their phone and computer. Reselling fills a lot of voids at a time when people need it to. Just my 2 cents

I detest item specifics 👿but hey I do all the things you mentioned so I feel good about that. I am truly starting working eBay because my husband retires from teaching in two years so with his writing and eBay we will be comfortable.

Thank you again!! You are awesome. I don’t see a place for “condition notes”??
@TheChaChingKing2 жыл бұрын
The condition notes are near the top...under the title. Some items don't have that box. Some vintage items and some new items won't have that box available

Great advice. I offer free shipping because I sell smaller craft items like scrapbook stickers. But my larger items like paper pads I do charge shipping. Do you have advice on how to price your items? What is meant by competitive pricing? Should I price my items slightly lower than other listings? Thanks, I’m learning so much from your tutorials!
@TheChaChingKing7 ай бұрын
Competitive pricing just means to make sure your prices are in line with your competitors. I've always been willing to price my items on the higher end and wait for the right buyer. But we have been moving more towards taking less and getting things sold. The reality is to do what works best for you. We've decided we want to reduce clutter and keep things moving.

I thought if you allow returns, you should have a shipping cost in the initial listing?? If not, it's on the seller to pay for the shipping cost back???
@TheChaChingKing9 ай бұрын
It's still up to you how you want to do it. If you include shipping the price of the item and halve "free shipping," you'll eat the cost of the original shipping if you get a return. If the person is on the level, I usually refund it anyway. Keep in mind, my return percentage is so low that it doesn't have much of an impact on my business at all.
