Thanks Scott for your videos, I mainly watch you and The Golden State picker. I am 61 and finally decided with my wife to start selling on ebay a week ago. We've always enjoyed going to yarsales but were nervous about starting ebay even though its a part time hobby now. So far after the first week we are at 400 gross just learning. We are getting stuff cheap enough to make money and move product to learn the process. We were worried about shipping so far that hasn't been to bad like anything else its a learning curve. We worried about a couple possible scams but contacted ebay and they were very helpful explaining what to watch for. Sales like this week motivated me, a Samsung digital camera for a dollar sold for 45.00...but the best one this week was the small box for 8.00 with various junk mixed in were some Star wars lego stuff like figures, after researching one figure it was rare and sold for 120.00 in an hour. The wife ask me why I was wasting 8.00 on a box of junk as we left the yardsale. If all that junk in the box sells I will be about 140.00 gross. The hardest part was starting and I credit you with that last push I needed. Thanks.

Scott, I just recommended a friend of mine to start watching your videos as she currently does not sell her items yet on eBay. You are absolutely correct about the points you mentioned and how important they are to being a successful seller on eBay or any other online selling site for that matter. Sometimes, it just takes patience to sell an item as well.

My grandmother's advice is still the best: go to high end stores, high end estate sales, museums and wealthy areas to look carefully. At the stores, (antique or other) pick things up and really look, feel clothes or soft goods. Look at the stitching, look at lining, look at fabric. Go to as many free museums as you can to see fabulous examples of stuff you love and really look. How is it made, what is it made out of, why do you like it? Once you see really good stuff and really good information about that stuff, you can spot things that are really good even if there isn't a tag. (You might not be able to sell it, but you might get to wear high end Italian Loafers for .25cents or buy high end vintage jewelry for $2).

Thanks for watching. And...apologies for the wall of text below! 🙂 I appreciate the comment and wanted to give my thoughts on why I think it's harder now. In 2020, there were 20 million sellers on eBay. In 2023 (the latest report), there were 18.3 million sellers. The high was in 2014 with a high of 25 million. And, of all the products sold on eBay, 80% of them are new, not thrifted items. And even though other platforms are gaining some ground, the vast majority of those items are crossposted to eBay. Most of them are factored into the analysis. What I do think that you are experiencing is that some of the new sellers are actually the thrift stores. With so many people in the workforce being raised in the digital age, there is a wealth of employees capable of listing online. So, the people who used to be their primary customers, you and me, are being bypassed. They are listing the better items themselves. You aren't struggling because of any KZbin videos or creators. It's because the places you source have become your competitors and they are skimming the easiest profits off the top before you can ever see it. So, it's definitely tougher. In fact, I've almost completely quit sourcing at thrift stores. With so much of it already being picked over by the store, other resellers are now looking more thoroughly just to find things. I've switched almost entirely to private picks now.
@amousanon.
@amousanon. 5 ай бұрын
@@TheChaChingKing this is an extremely well thought out reply and theory. I agree with you on that. I'm finding private picks harder too because everyone wants too much meat off the bone, so success is only coming with volume now. Volume is adding so much more hassle. Personally as a life long flipper on and offline, I see a need in the market or a need for myself to liquidate bulk to push the cream. Maybe I just need to get better at being laser selective. Love the channel btw!

I usually launder it unless it's really old. Once I get to the 1960's or older, you could actually be washing away some of the original character that people want to see. I'd definitely not wash any denim that pre-dated the 1950's. Just point out that if the denim has not been laundered and that will be left up to the buyer if they wish to do it. I TRULY appreciate the kind words.

I'm so discouraged. Lady said I didn't describe the t-shirt correctly and it had nubs all over it. I checked my listing photos and there are no nubs that I can see. I know on one of your videos you said there was a way to check the history of people that return items and you can block them.
