I had an aunt that made a beer bread. She used a warm beer, mixed it with self rising flour and baked it until almost done. Then put butter around the top but not enough to spill over into the oven. Very reminiscent of a sourdough bread. And delicious. No beer taste and the alcohol cooks out.

Back in the 60's, 70's and 80's my God-mother baked sourdough bread for her family. When I would go out to their farm for a visit she would make me a sandwich with sourdough. It was WONDERFUL! I've not had it since then but I've tried to make the starter and for some reason I failed to keep it alive. Maybe I'm not comprehending the instructions well enough. I'll keep trying since it getting autumnal cool and it's BAKING TIME!

She said rats were always threatening the food and this is what she witnessed: They would bypass all the breads (except for sourdough), and, instead, eat the....dog food!! So that's how icky all the other breads are 😮 Make Sourdough ❤

Words to the wise….do not throw the discard from the starter down the drain! I did…ruined my garbage disposal and some plumbing! Needless to say my husband was not happy! Learning curve with sourdough bread making!
@seagrif6 ай бұрын
If you mix it with water before you put it down the drain, you shouldn't have any issue. You can also put it down the toilet as well, but you might want to stir it up before you flush. Because of the nature of our septic system here, having starter go down the drain actually helps the process to break down all the material that does into the tank, and keeps it very healthy.
@TheHillbillyKitchen6 ай бұрын
@adelevotte4840 What kind of issues did you have? I thought it was good for the septic tank like @seagrif said. I don't have a disposal but if it stops up the pipes that would be good to know 😕Thanks For watching ❤️God Bless You!
@adelevotta48406 ай бұрын
@@seagrif when we opened the pipes the discard totally plugged up the pipes. We really exasperated matters with turning on hot water to break up the discard. I was told by a plumber I was basically baking and expanding the starter. I would just put the discard in another recipe or put it in the trash. I have no luck with starters period.
@adelevotta48406 ай бұрын
@@TheHillbillyKitchen The discard solidified in my kitchen plumbing and destroyed the garbage disposal. We tried flushing with hot water. That made matters worse. Basically bakes and expands in pipes. Seized up my garbage disposal as well. I will never throw sourdough discard down my drain again! This was my experience!
@adelevotta48406 ай бұрын
@@seagrifMy husband Bill just pointed out that you’re exactly right. The discard absorbs the bacteria in the plumbing. That’s what makes the sourdough discard expand and unfortunately cause the blockage in the plumbing. I had a few sourdough starters going that week. I was a tad overzealous!

Clean your starter jar with cold water. I fill a large plastic bowl with cold water. I put all of my baking tools in the bowl of cold water. I usually water my plants with the rinse water. Do not pour it down your drain. Makes cleanup a breeze

We talk about it in the next video. It's literally just mixing wheat flour and water, then you dump part and feed daily until you get starter. I highly recommend getting mature starter. It would save you money because of the waste and your bread would be good from the first loaf not in months when your starter matures. Thanks For watching ❤️God Bless You!

Another way you can steam in any oven is to get a spray bottle and spray the inside of your oven. You can do it with an electric or a gas stove or oven. Excuse me, but that’s what a lot of bakeries do. Don’t have a steaming option. A lot of the oven these days, have a well in the bottom if you look, you might see a slight indentation in the bottom of your oven you can put water in that and steam that way
