The 034 super and 036 are great firewood saws. I spent untold hours running stihl in a log pile when I was younger. Still have a 034 super. Dont cut as many cords of wood.

Great content as always Joe 👍🏻 I’d really like to see you show us with your dyno how different port characteristics affect a saw. It’s commonly acknowledged that raising the exhaust roof moves peak power further up the Rev range, but other aspects are not so well documented. For example with all other variables remaining constant how does a blowdown of say 20 degrees differ to a blowdown of 22, 24, 26, etc, and why might you select one degree choice over another? When I first started porting that really tripped me up and only after doing lots of saws did I begin to see a correlation. It would be fascinating to see if the commonly accepted correspondences between degrees opening (of all ports, not just transfers) and their associated characteristics play out on the dyno. Have a great day, Al

So was the 361, and it had flippy caps, spring AV, better filtration, and quad ports. It was a great saw, the first of the stihls to start swinging over to some husky creature comforts, then the angling of the handlebar help make them even better 😀. Edit, the 036 didn't have a side tensioner either. Lots of advances made from the 036 to the 361, but both run forever it seems. Hope you're doing well.

@@brettblack7049 you had me at “flippy caps.” 😆 yes, I meant the whole 36 models in general. Not too fond of my 362 though, Stihl should’ve made it more like the 400 imo. Great quality saw, but certainly not a 361…

@@IndianaDoug lol. I'm a much bigger fan of the husky flippies, they are flat out awesome; but I like the stihl flippy caps better than the screw caps. The first generation 362 was a heavy low powered brick out of the box, kinda like when husky went to the 575 after making the 372oe for many yrs 😳. I still haven't had my hands on an ms400, but I like my 462 well enough that I sold my ported 440, and the ported 500 I ran was a beast.

I did most of my learning on an 036. It was my only saw for a long time and I had to borrow if I wanted a top handle or bigger saw. When it finally died (someone put straight gas in it at a job), I replaced it with a 362 CMQ, and I still have it, although I don't use it as much since getting a 500. A lot of guys used to bug me about using that thing. They used 70cc or 90cc saws, but for the stuff we were cutting, the 036 did just fine most of the time and I felt far better at the end of the shift. It was a good all-day everyday saw, and the thing would have lasted forever if it hadn't had the gas issue.

Nice gains! I’d say it’s a win-win for the average guy cutting firewood with a shorter bar that doesn’t need as much tq. Lots of “easy start” type features on new saws today, but this lower comp build actually increases productivity. You could market this build as such and wholesale to dealers. Just a thought…

On his worksaws site it's $300 for porting and $50 to schedule the appointment per saw.. I just got back a 550xp he did and it's truly impressive, sent him my 572 and should be getting it back soon as well. That's on par with all other porters except you get dyno run printout and muffler mod/timing advance/compression increase from him as well

@brettblack7049
@brettblack7049 Жыл бұрын
It will bump the compression about 10-15psi depending on the saw/base gasket thickness and can help the timing numbers a bit(this is if you have enough room to delete the gasket, most like at least .020 squish clearance). Add a muffler mod and a little ignition timing advance (done by advancing the flywheel) and you can easily gain 1/2- a full hp depending on the saw, some will probably gain closer to 1.5hp doing all 3 and the rev up much quicker 😀.
@ladislavgazdik7595
@ladislavgazdik7595 Жыл бұрын
@@brettblack7049 Thanks for response. The ignition timing advance could by a nice performance gain, which I overlook. I think that 1 or 2 degree should by enough for 100 RON or 95 PON gas.
@brettblack7049
@brettblack7049 Жыл бұрын
@@ladislavgazdik7595 certain saws you can get away with more advance than others and you will have greater gains on some more than others. One of the downsides is that if you go too far, you will get popping. Another is that when you shut the saw off sometimes it will spin the saw over backwards and pull the recoil rope/handle into the recoil, sometimes ripping the rope thru the handle, not good. I only run 90 octane ethanol free fuel in my saws.

How is this considered a low compression saw when it has .024 squish? From what I know, this is typical of good high compression. I'm confused.
@dynojoemods2764
@dynojoemods2764 Жыл бұрын
Normally the squish cut would be 4x this build making the chamber much smaller. And the exhaust roof would be left lower. To keep that compression trapped longer. This with a light band cut and higher exhaust roof bleeds off compression faster than stock. Squish, chamber volume, and exhaust roof all play into the trapped compression of a saw.

@@dynojoemods2764 I agree. In fact I’d say a Razer-sharp chain is the best performance mod around 😉. From my personal experience I’d say 8-12% gain on intake / bored / larger carb, 8-12% gain (or more) with tuned exhaust and another 6-12% with flow porting I do. This is with stock squish and no machine work. A ported cylinder with a stock intake and stock exhaust isn’t gonna do all that much, everything has to work in concert at the target rpm you choose to build for , much akin to a musical instrument 🎷 … it all depends on the saw also , for example an 044 or 064 is really going to rock and roll vs a newer stratos saw like a 462c or 572/592xp given the same amount of work …. the factory cylinders are getting pretty good and it seems there’s not as much gains to be had compared to older versions while keeping longevity it mind- almost like the manufacturers are putting the saw builder outta business 😂 The “old-school” 0 series STIHLS whoop a cat on the newer “epa-friendly” versions all things being equal and Will Last a lot longer imho. Tolerances are looser in the new versions too - all goes back to planned obsolescence/throwaway society 😉. For example The Livermore centennial light bulb burned continuously from 1901 to 2013 and only went out because of a bad power supply … how’s that for longevity ?
