Hi Tom, love your tutorials. Could you paint a series on parrotelts, budgies and parakeets please? Thank you!

Hi Tom, thanks for this! I agree with Hou Bou, and would you consider some of the birds from New Zealand? The tūī (parson bird), kererū (NZ wood pigeon) and ruru (morepork owl) immediately come to mind but there are plenty more to catch your fancy.

I happened upon your videos looking for ideas for painting birds in flight. I am an experienced WC artist, but always looking for new ideas. At risk of being cliché I find your work beautifully loose with the kind of expression that can only be expressed in watercolor. Thanks for your suggestions, inspiration and explanations of how you make a simple loose study a masterpiece of the feeling we seek.

Really good lesson on how to keep it loose for someone who always puts too much detail in and then feels disappointed that I over did it again! Excellent bird, lovely feeling of light too.

Thank you :) So glad it was useful...one of the hardest aspects of painting I’d say, trying to keep it loose. I still fiddle and put too much detail in!! So I feel your disappointment pain! T

I think this might be my favourite bird painting I’ve seen you do, dynamic with lovely brush marks, not overworked, would love to hang this on my wall 👏👏👏 BTW I grabbed one of those Jackson’s Raven brushes in size 0 a couple months ago to try out because they were so inexpensive and was pleasantly surprised at how good it is.
@tomshepherdartist2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the kind words. I wash really pleased with it for those reasons, so Im glad you picked them out. I also love strong colours so I was pleased to work with more subtle colours in this one. Great to hear your are enjoying the Jackson's Raven. I was very pleasantly surprised when I got mine and it is now an absolute staple of my painting kit...especially at those prices!! Thanks for the support T

Beautiful and full of life as always and great lesson 👏🏾👏🏾Dear Tom..I don't know if anyone has requested this before but, I am really keen on learning how to paint birds using watercolor pencils - to paint with my little kids. Would you be able to guide me? Thank you 🙏🏾😌
@tomshepherdartist2 жыл бұрын
Hi there...thanks so much for the comment!! Using watercolour pencils is not something I’ve done in a very, very long time and even then very little to be totally honest. I can certainly put it on the list as something to explore and share at some point :) ...I would imagine using them in block. Like using normal...say draw out the bird first, colour it in using similar colours in each different section...then water and brush to wash it all together and get colours flowing. Great think is if you don’t want certain colour to mix you don’t wet them at same time...then you can use the coloured pencils over the top to sharpen up the drawing etc and colour in over the top of washes :)

Is the easy technique you speak of, the blocking in of the first washes? Just clarifying 😊
@tomshepherdartist2 жыл бұрын
Yes, pretty much:) - it's that technique of a simple watery first wash for lights - a slightly creamier wash for medium shadow areas, then drop in the thicker paint for the darker areas as it's drying. It's that simple process and using very simple techniques based around paint consistency that I think are the real key to watercolour painting specifically:)

Why don't youtubers ever show their drawing process? Did you draw it or did you trace it? If youtubers believe tracing is OK why don't they ever show themselves doing it? I'm not dating you traced it. I'm merely curious.
@tomshepherdartist2 жыл бұрын
Hi Phillip, you can see me drawing out in some oats videos, and I’ve had a few people request the drawing stage so will definitely be putting it in future videos...always thought people would be bored watching it, but apparently not :)....I agree, nothing wrong with tracing at all, I sometimes do if I’m keen to get painting, but I’m a big believer in good drawing skills (meaning arrangement of shapes, in any medium) being an important part of painting. Thanks for the question. Kind Regards, T
