The very first set I ever received was this exact one "High Speed Train" in Christmas 1984 when I was 4 years old. Yesterday my sons and I had a blast digging it out of the loft with all my other model trains and my eldest has asked for a set for his seventh birthday. Happy days!

Stunning repair job! Even without the LEDs, the warm dim lights look very satisfying Also good to see Nellie running again

Lovely job. I had one of these as a kid back in the '80s and remember it was quite a rough runner :) I also remember nagging my Dad about why the tail lights weren't showing, and he had to take it apart and show me that there was no red bulb in there 😂 I still have them somewhere, and will always keep it as it was a present from my Mum and Dad and has a lot of sentimental value. One day I'll give it a bit of TLC and see if I can get it running again - this video will be a great help when I get round to doing that :)

Hi thanks for watching. I have seen an upgrade to install directional LED bulbs so you can get red tail lights too, am considering having a go. Hope you get your set up and running , would be great to see it👍

Hi, a great job. I have several of these HSTs in various liveries - my favourite being the black GNER livery - and i love to see these old trains brought back to life when many would just give up on them. Thanks for your work.

Update, I've just done all of this on my set - Like yours, mine would only run slowly and it stuttered badly. In terms of the motor, I stripped it, used contact cleaner on the commutator with cotton buds and used a glassfibre pencil with minimal pressure to very gently remove the stubborn deposits on it, then used the cleaner on the brush faces held in place by self-tensioning tweezers until they too were shiny and bright. In terms of lubrication I took a slightly different route - I used the same oil pen as you for the motor bearings, but for the gears and their spindles I used a tiny smear of white PTFE silicone grease which I think will "tack" / stay where it's supposed to, rather than drain away. I found cleaning the wheels with contact cleaner or IPA makes a massive difference, mine didn't even look that dirty compared to some, but I found that it made all the difference. The final touch before reassembling the power car was a good gentle scrub with water and a nail brush to remove the decades of dusty and grime, then care blot drying with blue towel - then fitting the head/tail light LED I also fitted modern replacement all-steel wheels to my 4 coaches which further improves their running and lowers drag - I will look for a fifth also to make it closer to prototypical length.

Very good. That seems to have worked well. Whilst you've got a ringfield motor that far apart, I'd suggest also putting the brushes in some solvent to clean them, and taking the gears off and polishing them (the metal clip holding them just pops off... though some ringfield motors also use circlips). Sometimes, with the gears being left dry, the plastic pivots get worn so they're no longer round - that's bad news, as it's a pain to fix.

personally £20 of lights which i didn't see too clearly with the frosty old plastic was a bit too much for me. Would not recommend the light board. Best thing i'd say for these ringfields is the hob-e-lube grease for the gears and a good clean of the old grease. The squeaky noise is the two armature bearings. These motors are quite reliable given new brushes and oil once a year (or twice if used regularly). There's new bulbs on ebay if you want to, i found them quite bright white so better than a new LED board. This set looks great fun! What controller do you use? The better controllers quieten the locos down even more than you'd think possible. Great fix!! Regards Will

Hi Will, thanks for all the info and tips. I'm using the older Hornby controller at the moment. The motor quietened right down after lubing both ends of the armature and then running the loco for a while. All the best 👍

Hello padshaw junction i am a beginner and what i have learned so far has all come from watching you tube, i want to buy pre owned from ebay because i just cant afford to buy new , please can you tel me if i was to see something for sale that was a non runner can this be one way of saving me some money, and can you also tel me the tools i would need to do this ? i have just liked and subscribed to your channel . Hello Paul . Thanks for watching and commenting it's really appreciated. So far I have just used basic tools like a jewellers screwdriver set I got from a pound shop. I use brake cleaner and cotton buds plus metal polish for cleaning the chassis. Any bodywork I clean gently using soapy warm water. I got a set of different small tweezers from a pound shop too. I allready had a gas soldering iron but I am thinking of buying a smaller electric hobby one as the gas one gives out a lot of heat and have to be careful near plastic parts. I have been lucky so far with buying non runners from ebay, parts if needed have been available on eBay. I would say have a go as I have found fixing them great fun especially when you see them running ! Maybe try some train shows as my brother got a Hornby Hymek like mine for £7and it runs ! Good luck 👍 Pad.

That’s great and thank you for your advice and yes I will give it a go I’ve just been checking out the helping hands with the electric light the bulldog grips and magnifying glass I went to a exhibition a few weeks ago it was my first I’d no idea what I was looking at but I did manage to ask some questions and take notes but I noticed they were selling the helping hands at £19 and I’ve seen some at £12 on eBay so it does pay to shop around 🤔 I’m just starting to put together some tools but have a few more to buy just yet I also have the soldering iron on my list !! I have the Peco book that I bought from a charity shop and im finding this to be very helpful but when it comes to the track the points and the wiring this I will have to study that bit more because im not sure how to do this However I will look forward to watching your other videos as I will be notified every time you post anything on you tube Take care. Paul
