I am having a problem with my older Echo HC-150. I purchased it from Auction. I cannot get it to rev to full rpm. New carb, new fuel, all new fuel lines, new spark plug, new air filter, spark arrestor is clean (very clean like it was replaced already), the muffler is clean. The only thing I can think of is piston and rings. The gap on the mag looks good. What do you think?

Wow, looks like you've covered most of the bases. I would also take the muffler off and check the exhaust port. Some Echos have catalytic converters in the mufflers, that will keep the spark arrestors clean, but will allow carbon to build up in the exhaust port. Also, while the muffler is off, you could take a look at the piston and cylinder. Some times the rings can stick from carbon build up. You can take an "Ice Pick" type tool and try to move the piston slightly left and right to see if the rings are free. Or, with the muffler off, you can see if there is any scoring on the piston or cylinder. Sometimes you might get good compression cold, but once thing heat up, you may lose compression as things expand. One other thing is that maybe the High speed screw on the carburetor might just need adjusting. I usually hold the throttle on full, and turn it until it revs the highest, then slightly open it a little more for load. Hope this helps!

One more thing I was thinking about is that it might have an air leak. Hopefully not, because no matter what you do, it won't run properly. Sometimes, if you don't have the proper tools to test for this, you can look for excessive oil around the seals, cylinder/crankcase mount, or intake manifold. I can say I took the muffler off and I’m running it through my ultrasonic parts cleaner to get the carbon out of the inside. It’s been soaking for a couple of days and really doesn’t sound like the high rpm is improving. Unfortunately, there was no visible carbon to speak of nor was the exhaust port caked up in anyway.

@@reloading123 I would probably go to the carb and try to adjust the high speed needle jet. I think, on the carb for that model, it is in between the 2 fuel nipples. It usually has a plastic plug that resembles a cup shape. That needs to be pulled out. We have a tool for that, but you may be able to pull it by hooking a very small screw in it. Then you can use a very small flathead screw driver to adjust it. Usually, if the carb is new, it won't have the plug in it yet. The EPA requires shops like ours to put them in. I don't know if you got an OEM carb, but some of the carbs people buy online just don't work and don't adjust, especially 2 stroke. Sometimes you get lucky and get a real carburetor. Hope you get it running!

No, I haven't been paid by anyone for any videos yet. I actually like the Echo hedge trimmers, but just wanted to share some mechanical knowledge to keep them running.
