Just a warning, because it happened to me, but because you cannot automate the wood heaters, you need to disable them or design a cooling system to dump the heat because it doesn't take very long until your rooms become ovens for dupes. My mess hall, with just a single heater, became an angry red mess of heat. So, that's a heads up for anyone. Unless its been fixed through an update, I'd take precautions in the early game until you can figure out better solutions for temperature regulation.

What if you use a thermosensor to limit some aspect of the wood heater? (For example, connect to an auto sweeper or a door that blocks the wood from being accessed.

I've found a great use for mercury: cooling other substances in a tube-and-body style heat exchanger. Aquatuner running nectar (which is already passively available on the map) down to -70C in a "tank" of mercury will very nicely chill ethanol (or whatever gas you wanna put thru it) because the mercury passes temperatures so efficiently.
@ellenkuang88534 ай бұрын
I was also going to suggest cooling. Mainly due to Echo's experiment he tried that one time on specific heat capacity vs thermal conductivity. Thermal conductivity ends up winning out overall with all else equal. The vaporization point is much higher than polluted water and equivalent to crude oil, just with much better thermal conductivity. It'd be able to transition temps in a hurry.

Small note that mercury is a metal and a very good thermal conductor. You need to vacuum one side or the temperature will go through even if the gases stay in the right places.
@KaedysKor2 ай бұрын
@@xXMGVXx Liquid locks in general are very bad for temperature insulation, the point of them is gas isolation. If you want both, you need to use a double liquid lock with a vacuum between. Pretty much standard practice for isolating steam rooms and industrial saunas.

- mercury might be needed as coolant. Brine and Poluted water have a rather high chance to freeze in the pipes, given the low temepreatures. Mecury goes down lower and has several hundred degrees to spare before evaporating - the spigot seals might still suffer from vacuum. Keep in mind that one formula uses internal temeperature, the other external. In a vacuum, the seals actually get too warm, having no gasses to dump heat into - could you start with Steam engines? You have a Steam Geysir as initial and emergency fuel source. A volcano as the main source.

I look forward to seeing what your industrial... er... igloo? does with its heat output. I'm still skeptical that a frosty base could be maintained for any significant length of time; in order to make late game, you're pretty much obligated to make regular use of machines that produce a ton of heat. Still really fun to watch, though.

I kind of like the idea of having mercury on some temperature loops. I worked with some large sauna before, wich contain geisers/volcanoes inside, acuatuners, or even use the magma below to create more temperature. And i ended up with some steel machines breaking because of them temperature increasing in some spaces, and not having time to disperse arround. I thing mercury does a perfect job on "sucking" this temperature raise and quiclky dispersate it arround, due to this low specific heat capacity. Ill have to check if its worth tho, as i didnt have too much time to play it lately.

The most I do with Mercury is just putting it in enclosed loops; no power, it's not worth that, just moves cold from an area with lots of cold still to a farm that needs it. It doesn't move _much_ chill/heat around, but it's free once set up. Then cycling pipes through tiles with Hydrogen chilled with the gas coolers can let you have a small Hydrogen loop cover a large area with Mercury pipes. ... also there's some kind of Mercury lights? But I don't know about those, they seem redundant to me lol.

Reason you want to get rid of the wood heater asap: heat, co2 and a shit load of dupe labor. just go for warm sweater. Do you think running 2 petroleum generators (4kw) on a conductive wire (2 kw) is a good idea? It can work but when you have to repair the wire the benefit in ressources will melt downpPretty quickly, additionally heavy watt wire is just future proof.

I don’t think the heat per watt benefit for the petroleum generator will hold when you count the heat and power used by the ethanol distiller.

23:41 apples to oranges. compare hevy watt to upgradet heavy watt, not conductive. You need to do shenanigans with hw joint plate which transfers temperature, you cant put it in the walls, and is ugly as f ;) Heaviwatt conductive on the other hand is not so ugly, but requires skill to put it. if you want to power up metal refinery you do it on hw wire... its better. and faster :) You should rush to ranch bamoth and wool coats for your dupes - saves tons of labour and runing from toping heaters
@Kr0noZ4 ай бұрын
You can build heavy watt plates in a way to stop heat transfer, but it's a bit of a hassle (using a vacuum tile between double walls). Anyway, heavy watt being ugly can be managed with dedicated utility shafts, but that will likely be a future echo problem once his power needs go above the 2KW limit xD
@beheroot4 ай бұрын
@@Kr0noZ yes yes i know that, but building vacuum 'joint plate' is pain in the ass. when it is nesesery it's nessesery. My point being: comparing "fat wire" to "thing wire" is pointless. They have different usage.
