I can be present. When I want more alertness or attention, I "open" my eyes and look at my surroundings which usually are pleasant which reminds me that at that time, in this present there are no problems. It's my mind telling me to "be" ( more (present)

Thank you Eckhart for bringing me back to the ever peaceful present..again. I was in a deep funk, yes thinking creates most of my problems.

You must mean "wrong" thinking. Thinking itself is a feature of human existence that is designed to resolve problems.
@sandrabeltman94184 ай бұрын
@wthomas5697 ... you call it wrong thinking... I tend to get anxious, ruminate, overthink and obsess. I have a 'negative mental bias.' My low moods and my 'thinking' - feed into one another. Getting 'present' helps me stop that.
@wthomas56974 ай бұрын
@@sandrabeltman9418 If you pay attention to what your thinking is doing it's not solving the perceived problem. This is inaccurate, or "wrong", thinking. When we understand something thoroughly the mind stops devoting energy to the process. We're not really in control, we can only observe the result.
@sandrabeltman94184 ай бұрын
@@wthomas5697...it is not easy to intersect with observation when trauma triggers are fuelling the 'thinking'. And I should say I guess... that 'thinking' is the incorrect word in these instances. It is better called 'thoughts' I guess, that slip in promoted by mood/stress/trauma triggers. On these occasions a 'dread' can take over before I have the awareness/strength to (put/choose) myself in position of observer. This can end up running the show for quite a long disempowering while. I am not sure if you and I are on the same playing field here in discussion, but I thank you for querying my language and challenging me (for myself at least) to express in language, what happens in those dark times.
@wthomas56974 ай бұрын
@@sandrabeltman9418 What appear to be saying is that you are fearful of certain aspects of conditional existence and the resulting thought processing, which has evolved to address such conditions, does not lead to understanding. Only more of the same. When we truly understand something our future behavior going forward reflects our new found understanding. Our brain is attempting to effect a change in behavior. This requires clarity of thought, which requires uncorrupted input occasioned by present moment awareness. So we have to look at what we may have habitually avoided. Wrong thinking is due to reliance on habitual thought patterning. That's why it's referred to as a loop. There is no fresh data. Meditation retreats, such as those offered by zen centers and the vipassana folks retrain the brain to look at suffering. You might want to look into it.

I personally don't abandon thinking unless I really feel like it or caught in a negative loop (which is not often). It was useful for seeing that the identity was false. However, instead I appreciate uncertainty, by recognising I don't know, I can't ever really know, and most peoples certainty is deluded. I just playfully engage with what is in front of me.
@Itwasrealbutnotfun4 ай бұрын
How do you know you can’t ever know? That’s delusion too. All there is is knowing and what’s this personal self you’re referring to? You think you have some kind of individual power or control? Some special separate power and control? You’re right, most people are deluded. There is no individual nor is there any personal power or control. 😂😂😂
@Not-Getting-Political-Anymore4 ай бұрын
@@Itwasrealbutnotfun You could argue that my certainty in others not knowing is also deluded. When I said most peoples certainty is deluded I should have added including my own. I really don't know, neither does most people (I'm not too certain though), no matter how certain they are when say things. What I have experienced though is a more peaceful and fun life thinking everyone is deluded in some way, and it didn't involve me not thinking any more. Not thinking brings peace because the illusory self identity is gone, but without the self talk I can't really engage and have fun with what's in front of me the same way. I'm just here for a fun time.
@Maxyouaquestion3 ай бұрын
By deluded, maybe you mean pulsing with the similar life force which drives even your subconscious "thoughts" or actions: perception with unconscious awareness of concepts (names of things you drive past, what sort of a cycle youre currently involved in during the course of the day, certain motor tasks like writing, etc.)

Implicitly your teaching demands faith and belief exactly like the old religions do, because they demand faith in you as someone who knows in order to have belief in what you say, because otherwise, what value can your mere verbal explanations or descriptions of reality possibly have? You cannot argue that they are to encourage people to discover the actual fact beyond words themselves, because if that was a true motive force in your teaching, then you would actually teach people the absolutely imperative necessity of observing and understanding the phenomena of one's own consciousness themselves, which you never, ever do. So your teaching DOES depend on faith and belief of the follower, which is not an enlightened teaching, because obviously, manifestly, clearly and unarguably, faith and belief are not stepping stones to the truth but are themselves the very obstacles, the non-facts which blind and disempower and make you believe that truth is somewhere out there, in a book or in the head of a teacher, rather then in your own perception and understanding of what is as it is. All the great teachers of the East, and even the ancient Greek philosophers who initiated the whole Western intellectual tradition, said that one must understand oneself. 'No oneself' was the famous dictum of the ancient Greek philosophers. You don't understand yourself through faith and belief, obviously - you understand yourself by being free to observe and understand what you are in freedom from all teachers and authority, and all the great teachers understood that. But there were so very few great teachers and none of them are alive today. So it is up to YOU to understand this for yourself, otherwise there is no hope for you at all, ever. You will die a confused socially conditioned follower if you never understand the need to break free from all teachers and authorities, but if you are already captured by a teacher or authority it is only this teacher and this authority who could help you to understand the fundamental need of each of us to understand what we actually are ourselves, but clearly, if they understood this, they wouldn't be teaching anything at all, except perhaps the need for each of us to become free of all authority and become lights unto ourselves. And this wouldn't even be a teaching, but speaking the truth without any shadow of self-interest or hope for any kind of gain. And from this higher perspectives you can see the vampiric spiritual quacks for exactly what they are - greed machines destroying humanity and the Earth just like any other socially conditioned economic, spiritual, political or cultural vampire who do nothing but extract from those less fortunate then themseves.
