Some of the accent stuff might be from clones deliberately trying to stand out among the crowd. It is also possible that it is an out-of-universe effect to represent a more subtle difference that makes clone voices distinctive to those who know them. For example, I've always guessed that the members of Delta Squad in the Republic Commando game sound the same in-universe, but very slight differences allow them to tell each other's voices apart. Out-of-universe, this is represented by each clone having a different voice actor, which obviously doesn't make sense otherwise.

I think it would make sense too if the Kaminoans were to give subtle variations to the otherwise exact clones, such as hair color, eye color, etc. to give them a sense of individualism. They were encouraged to develop their own personality and sense of style, likely to give them that individual comfort and the feeling that they were in fact their own person, and I think it follows that a few cosmetic tweaks in the sample DNA would only serve to improve that effect.

The Clone Wars Show did a pretty good job explaining why most of the Clones don’t look the same, it’s either their Stretched genetic Code, or the fact that they themselves wanted to look Distinct from one another intentionally, even as far as Nicknames. That much can be said when most clones fashion different patterns to their armor to avoid confusion and to look recognizable.

The Kaminoans kept tinkering and tweaking, too. Each new batch had some minor code updates - along with a few experimental/variant individuals - which attempted to correct perceived flaws or improve their "quality" in combat, even though they were still same product generation. At least up to the final large orders (and youngest clones) prodiced at the onset of the Clone Wars.

Only the Alpha Arch Troopers were close to "Pure Jango" as far as Troopers. The normal clone troopers later on in the war did have differences in the genetics to be sure.

Even the regular clone troopers from the first batches were modified because they had been built to grow up faster and be better team players compared to the original who was a bit of a loner. ...Honestly it seems to me that the idea of using a lone bounty hunter as the template for an army wasn't well thought out and starting from finding a soldier (even a mercenary) who already was good at serving as a part of a larger unit would have been a better fit. But the point is that the clones were modified not only in bodies growing differently than normal humans but also they had gone through behavioural changes and since it is plausible that this programming of their minds would also have minor differences in individuals simply because of the scale, there never was a chance of making them all identical even if they tried. Too many factors and too many clones to avoid 0,01% chances of piling up.

@@Asko83 While the clones were modified to be less independent, this seems like a natural safety protocol than anything else. Jango Fett did fight along the True Mandalorians, so team corporation is definitely within Jango's capabilities. The problem would be if too many clones were independent it would make their behavior less predictable and more likely for mutiny. Granted the clone army was never made because of their obedience in the first place, rather due to Jango's ability to kill a Jedi, having Clones and Jedi close when order 66 came ensured the Jedi purge.

Like, I am aware of idea of force shields which prevent jedi from deactivating each other's lightsabers, but Grevious lacked the force.. Why did no jedi just charge at him, deactivate his lightsabers while attacking, cut off all his limbs and force carry him away into a prison? If he's pressing down on it they can't deactivate it. Also, in ANH Obi-Wan describes the force as "an energy field created by all living things.", In TPM Qui-Gon says all living things are powered by medichlorians (The thing that makes the energy fields mentions by Obi-Wan). Technically everything alive in Star Wars is force sensitive. I think the Jedi definition of "force sensitive" is someone who can use the force actively rather than just passively.

A lot of these actually might be partially environmental: eye color can change due to various reasons during gestation or even after birth (many babies are born with blue eyes that later become brown); hair growth and baldness is affected by stress, etc.

Personal theory: I think that the clones had their genes modified during growth, possibly with other human stock mixed in to stretch the sample from Jango as far as possible without suffering the effects of genetic degradation from all those repeated clones. Also, I'd really like a new episode of Clone Wars to drop a hint to Jango's body being recovered post-mortem and kept on ice for the Caminoans.

I think that a some point the kaminoans use others dna samples to enhance the clones survival on the different planets they were to be sent. For example, clones that were to be sent on a frozen planet like Hoth were modified to resist the cold, and clones that were to be sent on a desert world like Tatooine were modified to resist the hot.

I do have a science background because several members of my family became nurses. The reason why the Clones looks so different is because the kaminoans had to rush the cloning process in doing so they couldn't had the Clones look the same each and every time because they had to rush things, this means you had to tamper with certain aspects of the DNA just to be able to have the Clones come out at all and as you said there was only a small amount of genetic material to work with. The only way to get a pure clone that's an exact replica of the original is the have a vast amount of genetic material available. You would have to have the equivalent of 3 sperm banks worth of material from Jango Fett in order to make exactly perfect clones.

The eyes thing also seemed as if recessive genes were being expressed. Blue eyes are recessive, but commonly still present, so if Jango had them there is a chance that a clone with the same DNA could express it differently.

The amount of differences they inhabit wouldn't really exist when you think about the fact that they are all cloned from the literal cells of the same exact person, and all brought up in the same enviroment. There would be very minor if any noticable differnece in reality. But in a narrative sense with the cartoons that have to run for like 4 seasons, with these characters being very integral to the show, it makes sense to heavily differentiate them (accents, personality, mannerisms) for the viewers. The prequeal movies did it right. Millitary copies of Jango bred to follow orders.

Mass drivers never seemed to be used on a very large scale in Star Wars - mostly the main gun on the AT-TE or LAAT, or flak guns on starships, judging from what I can find. All pretty small, nothing like the scale of MACs in Halo. Even the smallest versions of MACs we've seen - the Halo 4 Mammoth's mini-MAC or the Onager mass driver from Reach - far outclass any of the mass drivers from Star Wars. A shipborne main gun like the one on a Paris-class frigate deals a completely different level of damage, and the orbital defense platforms around Reach and Earth go even farther beyond that sort of firepower.

Three things go into determining phenotype (the physical traits you display, such as hair color and eye color): genotype, environmental factors, and a little bit random chance. Your genotype is essentially your dna and all the different traits that are programmed into. Not all of these traits will necessarily be displayed in your phenotype, but it does factor into it. After all, if you don't have the allele for blonde hair in your genotype, you can't have naturally blonde hair. Environmental factors, such as nutrients, chemical exposure in the womb, exposure to radiation, or a fever as baby, affects phenotype as well, either by causing a person to develop differently or causing a dormant trait in their genotype to turn active. As with just about everything in the universe random chance also plays a role in affecting a being's phenotype.

Visual traits have several versions called alleles, so despite using the same piece of DNA, there can be a lot of variety in looks. You've probably seen identical twins and are able to tell them apart and if you have millions of identical twins, there is bound to be some with naturally different features and rare cases of mutations.

To explain Eye color. It is genetic but blue eyes are actually a mutation that happen naturally. Blue eyes and blonde hair are actually randomly occurring mutations and not caused by any genes or DNA. Now it could be the different eye and hair colors are the result of Jango's family, the genes of his parents and grand parents still being in his DNA. Hey Eckhart, just had a suggestion for another Who Would Win video for you: We’ve gotten plenty of Star Wars and Halo but how about some Stargate? Namely a Wraith vs Goauld invasion or vice versa? With the Jaffa ground troops being sustained by infant symbiotes, could the Jaffa be immune or at least resistant to the Wraith feeding? After all, Teal’c was fed on and he almost shrugged it off and that was without a symbiote! I namely would like you to address if the Goauld invaded the Pegasus galaxy right when the Wraith reawaken. How would the Pegasus humans respond? Would they ally with the Goauld seeing them as saviors? Would the Goauld go along with it? Or what if the Wraith invaded the Milky Way? They wouldn’t have access to the cloning facility there and what if the system lords allied themselves with one another and maybe even the Asgard? I think that you could really sink your teeth into this idea!

I don't think those two points are in contradiction. All or at least most Jedi become a part of the great cosmic Force when they die (it is less clear if that is the same for non-Force-users). The reason becoming a Force ghost is difficult is because you have to learn how to retain your identity in that situation, which Yoda, Obi-wan and Qui-gon did. When Rey taps into the cosmic Force at the end, she can feel presence of all of those Jedi, even though most of them could not have formed a Force ghost on their own.

That's the whole point of force ghosts, it's the only (light side) way to keep your identity in death. My point is that the sequel writes have shown multiple times that they don't care for the cannon and mechanics of the universe set before them.

Also something that I think is cool is how the clones of animals irl last about half as long as the original parent animal making Star Wars clones slightly more realistic

Differences in skin tone can be attributed to where they are stationed, different suns and different exposure to said suns. Differences in hairlines could be attributed to stress, and personalities will vary depending their experiences. But, if you just look at their faces, they all look pretty much identical.

I never really thought about it until now, but I think the most likely explanation is since the Jango Fett sample was being stretched thin, the Kaminoans were bolstering the clone genome with samples taken from other soldiers, sort of how the scientists in Jurassic Park used Frog DNA for the parts of Dinosaur DNA that they didn't have.

My basic understanding of genetics + what I know about the clones leads me to this conclusion. When they Kaminoans say they’ve “stretched” the DNA of the clones, it’s most likely referring to not using gene therapy and genetic engineering to alter the clones epigenetics to give them more desirable traits. They don’t want to waste too much of their genetic sample supply on tweaking little things like hair color, eye color, etc if they aren’t the standard brown. Also the reason that can happen is because Jango likely inherited the “blonde” gene, but the brown hair gene is what was activated on his genetic code so he had brown hair. So somewhere in the process of cloning him, it is possible that some of his clones may have had blonde hair if the Kaminoans left certain epigenic combinations up to chance in hopes of finding desirable mutations (aka, the bad batch), and then not having a steady surplus of genetic material to fix minor mutations lead them to not care as much about a clones hair being blonde or eyes being blue. So yes that’s my take on things.

It could be because our understanding of cloning has changed from episode 2 to the clone wars. Now a days, we understand that if you cloned a human, they would probably look like siblings, but not identical, as human experience affects our physical development as much as genetics do. They all start out the same, but as they age, they could look like twins, siblings or drastically different. Also like you said, genetic mutation is a naturally occurring thing, and even identical twins who are natural clones (from a science stand point), deal with mutations that alter one from the other. I'd say the clone wars clones are much more realistic (as realstic as anything star wars can be) than the identical, copy and paste clones from Episode 2

An interesting take and I'd like to expand on it, I have an identical twin brother, genetically we are the exact same, however he's a few inches shorter than me, when we were born he was severely underweight and I was a healthy size, this has to do with the fact that prior to our birth I was on the side of my mother's body that got better circulation. Even 24 years later I am noticeably taller than him, we've got drastically different personalities and have different interests resulting in me being a bit thinner than he is and when we speak people have said he has a noticeable lisp while I don't.

It could be recessive traits, mutations or body modification. In that one episode of Clone Wars Obi-Wan had a surgery to look like a completly different person, so changing ones eye or hair colour permanently could be as easy as getting a tattoo in the Star Wars universe.

So I guess that means if I were cloned my clone's eyes couldn't turn red since that was caused by an illness as well, something my clone wouldn't likely experience. But I'd bet my clone would be thinner than me if he grew up on Kamino.

I always viewed it as the Kaminoins started creating clones as a 1:1 type of cloning. But as they went on with their order, they modified their methods in a trial and error in order to improve their batches. They might have taken small samples from other humans in order to enhance their physical strength or emotional states to make them less aggressive and more obedient. As a result, we got clones with different eyes or hair colors.

At least some of them could be using cybernetics, and I believe Galaxy's Edge suggested that coloured contact lenses exist in the GFFA (which would go some way towards explaining why Saw Gerrera has had blue, green, and brown eyes).

I study Biology and I agree with you. IRL clones could/would differ not only duo to mutations but enviormental influences. Just take tongue posture etc. for example.

I wouldn't be surprised if they had gentic material from other doners to increase the versatility in alternate rolls. Jango was an ace but they might have used other DNA to stuff like making them more compliant.

I'm thinking the Kaminos tweaked Jango's DNA because, after the war, the clones would have entered the general population and have offspring. That much genetic material, if it were identical, would no doubt cause genetic problems in the future.

That´s interesting idea and it makes a lot of sense. Or, to avoid this problems, the clones might be genetically altered to be infertile. The accelerated ageing might be a problem in itself. If a clone wanted to settle down with a wife, he would be 80 years old when she would be 40. This is almost human-Elf level of heartbreaking stuff for a relationship. I don´t think the clones were ever meant to be retired though. They were treated like the disposable war material since they were born. Maybe, if noone needed them anymore after the war, they would be just euthanized.

I have heard it claimed that a lot of human physical comes from neonatal (in-utero) conditions, and so a clone of someone would actually look a bit different than them (though several clones made through the same process might look identical to each other). Twins, obviously, have the same neonatal conditions. I can't say at all if this is the case, but it is an interesting thought.

These “odd clones” are essentially the the “0.1%” that have all of Jango’s recessive traits. Just thinking of how we know genetics and nurture play a key in a person’s “everything,” I.E.: who they are, what, and why they think. Now, the Kminoan’s are much more advanced than we are. I’m sure they could control all the nurture, but keeping a genetic code 100% would be near impossible.

This happens actually irl. Cats are a very good example. Simple genetics cover fur color, but they never exhibit the same pattern when cloned (speaking about tabby, most common coloration). Sometimes they come out completely different, like a calico cloned from an orange tabby.

As soon as you create a perfect clone of yourself with sentience, the second it start to live on its own and get its own experience, it became its own person and not you anymore. The same could be said on genetic with such an extreme number of individual clones; for example, it's not that rare for a person to have their hair color or eyes color change from childhood to adulthood. I don,t remember the exacts terms, but I know that the genes that settle on your definitive physical features like colors are not completely set when you are born. This could explain it. We also have to remember that the clones aren't perfect copies of Jango Fett; they have been altered, first to make them age faster, and second to make them more docile, to implant the famous biochips and I assume there's been a few others manipulations. As much genius geneticist the Kaminoans are, on such a scale again, they are going to make mistakes, touch something in the genes that they weren't supposed, things, details, like that. Finally, there's the fact of different environments, like you mentioned. We know for a fact that clones are sensible to the same illness as regular humans, like this clone, I don,t remember his name, who got a brain tumor who prematurly activated his biochip. Knowing that, who knows to what kind of different atmospheres, micro-organisms and other on alien worlds, and what it would do to them?

Well, that genetic diversity helps greatly when dealing with bioweapons and the other types of disease. With different immune systems, there's less of a chance that a pathogen that is able to kill one clone, will be able to kill all of them.

And thanks to the bad batch we know that the Kaminoans were constantly trying new ways of cloning leaving different clones like the bad batch and probably is a reason for minor appearance changes to other clones

I'm guessing the hair styling[not color] is from teasing and training the hair a certain way. Colors easy but shape and direction of growth may also be part of they're hair care products available.

I had friends who were identical twins back in the day, and you could tell who they were immediately (from their face alone). Identical twins aren’t too dissimilar from clones.

It's also quite possible that due to them stretching the fett genome so thin they might have had to fill in some sequence gaps with other DNA Jurassic park style or maybe they just used fett's genetics as the base in randomized his genes

You would be surprised to find out that the Clone Wars does tackle this issue many times. A clone traitor, a clone deserter, and even after the Umbaran Arc ends Rex and Fives ask "What's the point in all this?"
