If only the Empires procurement department was like that, they would've won - Imperial X-Wings (well the Tie Defender) would've been a game changer. @khadenallast44954 жыл бұрын
@@casbot71 I disagree with your assertion about the X-wing/TIE Defender being a game changer. The only thing the X-wings were arguably better at was survivability, otherwise they were relatively evenly matched in both speed and firepower (the TIEs certainly didn't seem to have trouble keeping up or shooting them down in the Battle of Yavin or Battle of Endor). Slap some shields on them and rework the design so that it can properly land and has tilt wings so that more of them can fit in a hangar, and you'd have the perfect fighter for the Empire. Remember you can't chase someone through hyperspace, so the TIEs really didn't need hyperdrives or the like since they were launched from ISDs anyway.

I loved this from Isard's Revenge. That Ackbar directly learned from his experiences with Thrawn and then used that knowledge against Krennal was a delight to see. One note though Eck, Krennal was not aware the attack was coming, he was mobilizing for a raid on Coruscant, which is why he had more forces at his capital at the time Ackbar arrived.

Also I think there is a bit of Thrawn's Point of View of the battle in both the Last Command novel and that of the Last Command comic where he observes the New Republic Fleet exiting Hyperspace he mentions something about Ackbar during that.

If I recall correctly, while the Prince Admiral was humanocentric, he was actually welcoming to the idea of having a Quarren fight for him that he believed was eager to spill Mon Calamari blood.
@robertdrexel20434 жыл бұрын
Correct. The Quarren in question is Nrin Vakil a former Rogue Squadron pilot who joined the Rogues as the pilot of a Recon X-Wing and later joins the Rogues in masquerading as the TIE Defender Squadron Requiem. That line is quite ironic since the reason he left Rogue Squadron in the first place was due to the death of Rogue PIlot Ibtisam, a Mon Calamari, who was quite close to Nrin. It was even more ironic in that Ibtisam died on Ciutric IV the last time Rogue Squadron was on the planet and now they were once more on the planet but in the guise of Imperial pilots.

Such a creative work around to not having an interdictor! Is it just me or are the tactics used in the Galactic Civil War(mostly Legends Post-Endor) far more clever and cunning then those seen during the days of the Republic, in the Clone Wars for example. Don't get me wrong, there are neat little strategies and tactics used by the Republic and CIS that are really fascinating but nothing quite as unique as the Thrawn Pincer or the Ackbar Slash.

#askeck - I’ve had this question for a minute and I was wondering if you could give your thoughts. In Star Wars Rebels Admiral Thrawn conducts an orbital bombardment of the Rebel base, in which we see multiple ISD’s utilizing their main batteries. Now, just a single blast of these turbolaser batteries is very often quoted to have a destructive yield greater than the megaton range in Star Wars circles. And yet, in Star Wars Rebels, we see Kaanan speeding through the bombardment on a speeder bike, and the bombardment appears to be much closer in destructive yield to a conventional artillery barrage. Obviously, if turbolasers were even very conservatively carrying megaton yield effects, one shot would have put Kaanan and a 10 mile radius up in irradiated smoke. So just as a thought experiment, if we took this scene as a canonical example of turbolaser power…how would that prompt us to rethink everything about space combat in Star Wars? Just feel like this is an interesting case study. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4O1YYWGp9eSqMk&t=33 P.S. I'd actually love if you did a whole video analyzing this!

@EckhartsLadder, you badly botched how you described this battle. I've read Isard's Revenge (the novel that features this battle) over a dozen times, and can name of the top of my head three major issues you got wrong (FYI, I double-checked the book before commenting, so I know I'm right here). 1. Like Grand Moff commented below, Krennel didn't know that the New Republic was about to attack Ciutric. He had intelligence indicating they were planning something, but assumed that they were going to lay an ambush for him when he went to strike one of their supply convoys. His assembled fleet was actually meant for a grazing strike on Coruscant, and Ackbar's sudden arrival was just bad luck. 2. 'Binder' was NOT an Interdictor Star Destroyer in the novel, but an Interdictor Cruiser. I know that there's conflicting info, but Michael Stackpole was very clear in describing his 'Binder' as being one of the smaller interdictors. As far as I'm aware, the info claiming that 'Binder" was an Interdictor Star Destroyer came from Star Wars comics, and I've always viewed then as being of lower reliability than the novels when it comes to canonicity. 3. While Ackbar did order a withdrawal once he realized how outgunned his fleet was, it's abundantly clear from the battle's description that things happened so fast that they didn't have time to carry out that order. "Home One" and "Reckoning" are described as firing on each other's BOWS, while Decisive was ordered to roll to PORT to come up and over Emancipator after failing to penetrate the NR ship's PORT shields, with the Emancipator responding by having its PORT guns fire on the PORT shields of Decisive. The only way this description works is if the two fleets were bow-on towards each other, not Krennel chasing down Ackbar as you've depicted. Go ahead and double-check the book. It's the beginning of Chapter 35, page 300 in my copy.

#AskEck Since Disney now owns Fox, what do you think they will do with their R-Rated franchises? ignoring the Marvel stuff, Disney now owns Home Alone, Ice Age, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Avatar, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Night at the Museum, Independence Day, and Planet of the Apes, witch are more or less family friendly (i know ID4, Buffy, and Apes aren't, but at least kids can watch them without getting nightmares). These i can see being rebooted or getting fresh talent. But now they also have Alien, Predator, The Omen, Taken, Die Hard, Wrong Turn, Kingsman, Lake Placid, The Hills Have Eyes, The Fly, and the Exorcist. These are franchises that i doubt Disney knows what to do with. Kingsman, i can kinda sorta see getting a kiddified spinoff like Starship Troopers did with Roughnecks, and Die Hard and Taken could be taken down to PG-13 through reboots, but the others... all the rest are serious hard R-rated franchises- predominately Horror, too- with a lot of gore and scares that would give kids nightmares for weeks on end. What do you think Disney will do with the R-Rated stuff?

#AskEck Any particular reason why Wedge's X-Wing sensors don't pick up the DS2's shields in ROTJ?
@khadenallast44954 жыл бұрын
They were being jammed. Remember right before then Lando's asking about the shields and says they should have a reading on them up or down, and then after some alien speak asks how the Empire could be jamming them if they don't know they're coming. The answer of course being that the Empire did know. Wedge's X-wing didn't detect it for the same reason the Falcon couldn't get a read on it, but as the X-wing is several times smaller and more standardized than the bundle of rigged together illegal parts that make up the Falcon, it has a less sophisticated/advanced electronic warfare package and therefore couldn't detect that its systems were being spoofed. At least that's the only logical reason I could see.
