Ecoline Brush Pens Full Review and Swatch

Hi everyone! In this video I am doing a full review of the Ecoline Brush Pen Set of 30. These are water based dye ink markers and are great for brush lettering as well as watercolor techniques. I swatch all the colors, blend them in multiple different ways, and test them on different types of paper. I hope you enjoy and learn something new!

Hello you all!! These pens and work like a dream on cellulose paper. Cotton paper absorb the ink/dye too quickly.

Hi, I'm considering buying some of these :) does this mean that they don't blend on cotton papers would all blend nicely on (pretty much) all watercolour papers? Or was there just something about the one that you used? Thanks 😊

I’ve tried them on many cotton papers and most of them they didn’t blend well. But for some reason they work well on Canson heritage cotton paper. But I find that most juicy brush markers (like Karin Markers) blend well on that paper. But if you find they don’t blend on a specific paper, you can always use them with a palette 😊

Great review! I just purchased these today and have a problem though, maybe someone can help? My black is coming out brown! It goes down black but dries to brown. Maybe it's because it's new? I've been shaking it and using it to get the ink flowing, but no luck yet. The yellow also seems a lot dryer than the other pens, and is very pale. They don't match anything like your swatches. I know the paper makes a difference, maybe the colours don't look good on this paper. What's really confusing me is the black though. We have an older black ecoline pen, exact same pen, which goes down black and stays black. Same paper being used in both tests. Could they have put the wrong ink in the pen or is there something I'm meant to do to them when I first get them? None of them seem as vivid or strong as they should be. I'm completely new to markers of any kind, so any help would be much appreciated! I tried searching online but no luck.

It seems like something’s wrong with that batch, like maybe it’s old. If I were you I’d exchange it and see if the new ones are better. They should be juicy and colorful and the black should be black.

@@thehomegrownartist214 Thanks for the response. The black is the real problem, but after using them all evening I'm still really enjoying them. The yellow is very pale, but layers nice with the others. Luckily we already had a black that works. Most of the colours are gorgeous so it was still well worth it. Thanks for the videos and the kickstart to get my own set!

The brush is really nice actually and unless you use it repeatedly on textured paper it stays nice. Also the fact that you can switch it around is great. They are def worth it I love them 😍

What abt the bleeding? Does the ecoline bleed through paper more than tombows? And can u build up more values with the ecoline than the tombow?

Yes ecoline does bleed through more paper. And with values I think ecoline goes darker more quickly because they are so juicy. But you can use them like watercolor if you want a slow build up

Hi Barbara, so I see you have a review of the Ecoline. Which ones you like better these or the W&N? If I remember right I think the W&N blended better when you did their review. They blend for me very nice too. I see there is a grey here that doesn’t blend, so I guess the it’s not that unusual that the 9 grays I have in the Karin don’t blend at all. But I thought they would be juicier and the W&N are definitely juicier. I was thinking of the Tombow, but I don’t do lettering, and I think that’s more for that. I want these for coloring. I guess the Ecoline is more expensive than the W&N. But I don’t think the W&N is refillable. I’m curious which ones you like the best?

Honestly this is a hard question to answer bc it all comes down to what paper you’re using. If your just wanting to color coloring book pages I’d say stick with Tombow. More colors for cheaper if you buy the whole set at once, and they have a smaller tip so you can get details and although they are juicy, they aren’t too juicy to bleed through the pages. If you like coloring on cotton artist grade watercolor paper then def the W&N because they will always blend better. It really depends on how you like to color and on what paper.

The Ecoline are similar to Tombow just bc they are both dye based inks and both blend better on cellulose paper. W&N are pigment based (so actually watercolor) and blend better on the higher quality cotton paper. Again it depends on your needs but I personally like the Ecoline because refillable and can switch out the brush tip. If your using cotton paper Ecoline are still good as long as you move quickly but W&N will blend way better bc they don’t soak in as much. Again it really comes down to what paper your using and your style. Sorry I’m not being more helpful, it really is a hard question to answer since I don’t know exactly what your coloring and on what type of paper.

@@thehomegrownartist214 Yes I understand, well I use both the cellulose and cotton papers, probably more cellulose, W&N actually blends very well on both. And I know that W&N is different because of the pigment. I was more referring the similarity with Ecoline as far as shape and size. And I like the Ecoline because it's refillable. I think I should see how I can make the Karin work and try and ad some individual markers to the W&N 12 set I have. Karin support told me now that their grays and some of the lighter colors will not blend well directly on paper, it's better to use a palette, so I have to get use to that. I asked about the Ecoline because they are refillable, but I saw they don't blend as well and they are expensive too. Since I already have some W&N maybe best to ad to that.

Yes for sure, if your using them on watercolor paper then they are best. That’s what I did was add a few other colors to my set of 12. When I use Ecoline colors, the ones I know don’t blend well on the paper, I take the blending brush and dip it into the Ecoline ink and blend that way or I’ll use it like a watercolor and scrub some color out on a pallet and pick it up with a waterbrush. Probably the same goes for Karin markers. If your doing your art mostly like watercolor on watercolor paper then W&N are def the way to go for rewetting and blending the colors as you have more open time to work and they are the only ones that work well on cotton paper. At first I thought maybe you meant coloring books and to me they don’t work well for that. But yea I’d stick to those, I think you’ll have an easier/more fun time using them for sure. Hope it all works out. 😊

Paper is the most important thing no matter what medium you are using. It can completely change the outcome of your work. I always say you can buy cheap pencils, pens or paint and you can create amazing art as long as you have the right paper. Always buy the best quality paper you can afford.
