In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission, Morocco's truth committee, the National Human Rights Council of Morocco, in partnership with the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies and with the sponsorship of the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Morocco in Geneva, organized a side event on the margin of the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council entitled "Bridging justice, reform and memory in transitional justice processes", on 25 September 2024, in Geneva.
This event, which brought together relevant stakeholders, took place at a time when conflicts continue to arise and even escalate worldwide, thus adversely impacting the enjoyment of human rights, including the right to life and security of person. With a view to settling such conflicts, transitional justice can be used as a leverage for truth, justice, reparation, memorialization and guarantees of non-recurrence.
The event aims to address several questions related to the interlinkages between the outcome of transitional justice and human rights reforms, ways to ensure justice for victims; approaches to memory preservation; impacts on sustainable reconciliation, social stability and development.
