I couldn't agree more. I'm about as far from an academic or intellectual as one could get, a truck driver as a matter or fact, and this was just like pure nourishment for my brain i was instantly so engaged i fired off 3 or 4 comments before Mr Wolf even finished his opening statement.lol My point is the gatekeepers think the average Joe has no interest in any sort of long form or in depth philosophical discussion/debate when that couldn't be further from the truth. These are the big ideas that will shape our future for better or worse and as a society we should be breaking them down, scrutinizing and re-scrutinizing them constantly from all sides n angles.
@jdavis7993
@jdavis7993 4 жыл бұрын
@@buckyflex1 Intellectualism is about sonder interest in the truth, not profession. I wouldn't make the assumption that a truck driver is incapable of being an intellectual. Frankly, discussion of important economic ideas *must* include the working class. That is the driving force behind Marxist ideology, whether you think economic systems should be capitalist or not. Frankly, I would prefer a capitalist system where some board chairs are just employee representatives, almost like a company parliament. The thing is, this might actually be less efficient than just having the government impose a required board structure. Conversation as to what the best form of the system would be is up for debate, but all stakeholders, including employees, should be considered.

@jd-yo2is
@jd-yo2is 4 жыл бұрын
Wolff doesn't really make any sort of point though... The gist of his whole argument is 'I want something else' But the thing he wants is already that we already have...? He just wants to force it onto everyone I guess...? He doesn't make anything close to a technical economic argument this whole debate. Not to mention that almost all of his 'points' about capitalism can be refuted by just silently pointing at Scandinavia...
@jd-yo2is
@jd-yo2is 4 жыл бұрын
Eros well Wolff’s whole argument is based on the whole Marxist idea that workers are exploited by wage labor. But we can look at Scandinavia and see some of the most most egalitarian and successful advanced economies of all time. Some of the highest GINIs, best economic mobility. All the social programs you could imagine... These are mixed ‘capitalist’ economies.. Free markets, large private, for profit sectors. This private sector and the growth it brings can be taxed to support social programs. Wolff’s whole argument that ‘capitalism’ is inherently exploitive doesn’t really stand up to common sense economics. At least domestically. Internationally is another long discussion to have.
@jd-yo2is
@jd-yo2is 4 жыл бұрын
John Proctor labor isn’t the only input of production. Labor is important but not necessarily all that important in many companies. We can talk utopia all day and use that as a framework to criticize the current system. But ‘workers DESERVE to be paid their average product of labor or it’s EXPLOITATION’ is a pretty dumb oversimplified starting off point.
@jd-yo2is
@jd-yo2is 4 жыл бұрын
John Proctor ‘some owners treated their slaves well and taught them to read’ You missed the entire point... As I said...the most advanced, economically mobile, richest, egalitarian system OF ALL TIME... That’s an achievement bud... But you just whine that it’s not good enough because of some flawed and oversimplified philosophy about 'exploitation' and baselessly compare it to slavery.

Spongebob and squidward need to seize the Krusty Krab. While Spongebob provides the labor for creating the burgers and squidward runs the front end of the business taking orders from the customers, the capitalist (pig) crab pockets the profit while giving the two workers a pittance. Nobody earns the value of their labor. Obviously this is why spongebob and squidward live in squalor and discomfort next to Patrick, who literally lives under a rock, while the bourgeoise live elsewhere. Krabs justifies his profit because he procured the capital to create the restaurant and owns the formula, while actively doing nothing of value for his workers or his society. Plankton, meanwhile, is a reflection of the class struggle as he is ruthlessly outmatched at every turn due to the inherent inequality in the system. Neither worker can “choose” to get another job because the reality of Bikini Bottom is that there aren’t any other reasonable options. Squidward obviously does not voluntarily wish to be there. There is a guise of individualism and self determination thrown over a flawed system. Unfortunately, as long as they can feel superior to Patrick, who is lower in society, they too believe they can one day be like Mr. Krabs.

The thing that struck me the most throughout the debate, is how two people with vehemently opposing views, respected each other, actively listened and could engage in heated conversation, without resorting to petty insults and underhandedness. They both remained lazer focused throughout and even managed to find some common ground. In parts of the debate they stood up and protected the others right to speak and be heard, when heckled by audience members. A lack of civility and the inability to respect a political opponent in this way, is perhaps the greatest threat to modern democracy, politics and freedom of expression we currently face. This is what serious people sound like. Very different from our world leaders isnt it?

Gene Epstein begins with an apology to Richard Wolff for an earlier outburst, he subsequently transitions into a critique that personalizes the concept of socialism to Wolff’s interpretations, rather than addressing the ideology in a broader sense. This strategy subtly shifts the debate from a general discussion to a more personal critique, which could be perceived as a nuanced form of personalization that edges towards underhanded critique, albeit within the bounds of formal respect. EDIT: Yeah... Gene is literally attacking Richard's character and whenever he touches on the primary subject he just gives examples of all the current problems we are living with...

@mr12aT

It was good, and the Capitalism’s argument was full of strawmaning. For example, the hypothetical about a socialist party winning the majority of votes of the ballot box, then introducing full blown socialism overnight. However, Socialism’s argument included the history of the process of Capitalism, it was not an overnight change from Faudism but a centuries long process. Just logically, that’s exactly how most ideas come to fruition. So it’s a bit of a strawman argument from Capitalism, which raises questions about integrity and trustworthiness.

@@mr12aT This debate was about socialism vs capitalism. But all that wolff was arguing was about why capitalism is so bad, that it is unstable, that and that. He never once presented the benefits of socialism. The capitalism guy literally said capitalism is not perfect and he listed the disadvantages, he said we should be careful with capitalism, and also talked about the benefits. Wolf never one talked about the benefits of socialism only why capitalism is bad. He did not talk about the disadvantages of socialism. If someone tries to sell me a car and all he does is criticizing my current car, without talking about the the functionality of the new car,. I know he talks bullshit and he knows that too, and is just trying to con me. I never trust people that only talk about the disadvantages of the product, system, person, that they don't like without actually talking about what he is offering. I honestly have no idea what kind of system wolff offers, i only know what kind of system he hates and that is not what this debate was about.

@@pElisei Taxation, for any purpose, is literally theft via extortion. On the other hand, it is a myth that capitalism is a meritocracy. They are both completely wrong. Taxation is cannibalism. Capitalism is a grotesque game of musical chairs, in which 99 percent lose, then propaganda attempts to get them to blame themselves. Socialism is parasitism, plain and simple. It works until you run out of victims to tax. socialist propaganda encourages the cannibals to murder and gorge, until there are no more John Galts to murder.

MrIHadToDoIt a good example of why not all unions are good. In this example, it gives undue to power to police, who are not working class. Their relationship to economic production is enforcement of the laws instituted by the ruling class (private capital). Unions are beneficial for the working class to collectively bargain, aka to have any chance at bargaining at all instead of simply being fired for asking for more equality. The purpose of the police union is to shield cops from the consequences of their unlawful behavior, which is disproportionately used to afflict the working class

1:27:12 Portuguese here. It is in fact true, we had this coalition for quite a very long time. So long that people are tired of it. People are tired of being poor and having bad work conditions. We have ‘free’ healthcare, we earn 14 salaries a year (1 extra salary every 6 months), we have work groups that fight for worker rights, and still working and living in Portugal is just getting worse and worse. Young people and talent is running away from this country cause although we have all of these ‘rights’, non of them actually work. Because public companies don’t go out of business when they do a bad job - which they do a terrible one - and people are literally paying at least 40% of what could be their income to support those same companies and can’t afford private services, we just find ourself hopeless. I could go on and on on how and why it leads to this situation, but there’s no point in doing it here now. Portugal has a very aged population also and most of the older population has still in mind that communists saved our country from the dictatorship that ended in 1974. Because of that, they trust that communism and it’s other fields is what brings equality. And in a way, they’re right: we’re all equally poorer by the year. But because young people need to live by the democratic decisions of the elder, we can’t get anywhere else. I believe this country will keep going down until it reaches the point where you can’t tell it apart from 3rd world countries and only then we’ll have a revolution that will bring free markets and prosperity. Because of that, I think I will always believe that states are corrupt and should be kept as minimum as possible

No, Austrian economics are built on a presupposition that free markets will inherently fix all of the problems wrong with capitalism. Wolff attributes capitalisms problems to itself, he has demonstrated before how capitalism, even in a free market, would eat itself alive. Austrian economics are a joke because they fundamentally don’t believe in scientific rigor or study.

Classic debate of idealism vs reality, communism doesn’t work because it’s fundamentally flawed, that fundamental being that humans are inherently flawed, we are not robots or ants, we behave individually to a large extent, capitalism is superior in that it excepts that fact and works in accordance with this natural fact, that we are conscious beings that make conscious decisions based on insensitive and that values are subjective to change, also that part of being an individual we tend to want to do/achieve/work different jobs, communisms idea of equality is everyone has the same outcome (save for those who end up controlling the state lol), capitalisms idea of equality is everyone has the same opportunity to achieve their specific desires

Communism (despite what intentions Marx had for it) became a tool used by aspiring dictators to manufacture consent (with the lie of equality) to break all hierarchies down so that in the power vacuum, the despots can take over. A stateless, classless society cannot exist in perpetuity as it is against human nature to not compete for resources, as you said. Our social behavior is more like hawks than doves, we're literally a predatory species. Capitalism is a hurdle for globalism since it allows for power to be distributed amongst various sources rather than a single one like government. Government is the original monopoly and despite crony capitalist negative externalities, it really is the best way to socially organize a predatory species in relative cooperation.

Great way of putting it. "Advancement of the welfare of the people". I know this isn't a political party debate but both conservatives and liberals are convinced that what they are doing is best for the people. After 12 years talking politics (much more to go I'm sure 😑), I've understood the issue is never black and white, but always nuanced and grey. We're always learning and seeing things from a different perspective. I just hope people don't forget that.

Without incentive to work, to produce, very few will work or produce. There is no way to compel a members of a population to create an iPhone (Steve Jobs) or a laptop computer or the assembly line (Henry Ford) or the electric light bulb (Edison), UNLESS there is a justification for the commitment of time and effort. When socialism fails - when it becomes plainly evident that no one is going to work harder than their neighbor because that would allow the neighbor to be lazy - the leadership gets frustrated and seeks a remedy by dominating and threatening (and killing) the population. This has happened in every authoritarian socialist country. The failure to admit this truth is a poison on our species. The corollary is this. We do not yet have enough understanding of Nature to provide all the things we need for free. It will be hundreds of years before that occurs. When any person can have anything they want, at any time, in any quantity - technology will have advanced enough and permanently ended SCARCITY. Because that is the reason incentives are needed - to eliminate SCARCITY by way of increasing our understanding of Nature. Socialism and communism did not give us the airplane (the Wright brothers), the polio vaccine (Jonas Salk), refrigeration, the telephone (Alex Bell), and so on. Socialism and Communism are: - Venezuela - North Korea - Cuba - the old USSR No one flocks to those countries. People flock to the United States. People are not stupid, the bulk of us. .

@MrMorphicus I agree. I was a homeless teenager and a 10th grade dropout. By my mid-30s, I had independent financial means and never again had a boss or a 'permanent' job. It boils down to effort. If you are willing to make an effort in the U.S. you can improve your situation. How? I joined the military then went to college and made sure I studied a subject with lots of jobs available in the economy. It was not easy but it was worth it. People who think they want communism or socialism are liars because they can buy a one-way plane ticket to Venezuela or Cuba or NKorea and immediately live in socialism/communism etc. BUT THEY NEVER DO THAT. "I want socialism!" Okay relocate to Venezuela or another socialist country. "I don't want to go to all that trouble!" Why not? "Because I'm lazy!"

Except the financial crash was already being telegraphed well before we o ew covid even existed. If you go back to last year, half way through last year, to channels like Re Education and Beau of the Fifth Column, they break it down in a way that laypeople can understand- using the evidence provided by expert economists. But they warned of the coming downturn, and what regular people could do to prepare for it. So the crash was forecast well before covid. Covid incited it, perhaps a month or two before it would have happened, and it certainly made it worse than it otherwise would have been. But it would have happened anyway.

@Virgil Kemp Libertarians do not have any free will or free thought nor a critical mind, they just want to feel good about themselves when they take easy and conforming ways. This is why this slimy economist agreed so much with Wolff but cherrypicked things as usual. They are all sophists. To them, the truth does not matter, what truly matters is the perception of the people who listen to them. Do people buy their arguments or not? What and how should they say and represent it so that others would buy their arguments? These are the most important questions to rightwing economic "radicals". and you are never born an "individual" but become one. If you buy an iphone and play cherrycrush on it then how would I think of you as someone "unique"? Free will is an illusion in which we have to believe in order to sustain ourselves till we die.

🏠 Stupid people System is the problem 🏡 Our Life should be around these Great Qualities..... 1, Show all living creatures; all the love and kindness as much as you can. 2, Only try to be honest with yourself. If you try to be honest with others, you will get into big trouble soon or later. 3, Aim only one target at a time; otherwise you are chasing two rabbits and you will miss both. So, the reason behind it. Have one powerful reason and never ever give up the one you want the most. 4, Don't try to be good person only but be the powerful person. We will grow to be the one or we will die. There is no other choice. 5, Always learn and look for to improve something your life. 6, You are not alone. Love and faith the high power reduces unnecessary stress in life. But never completely rely on it. 7, Success and happiness are the byproducts of our usefulness. So, always increase the possibility of success. 8, Life is not going to be easy. Because of our unnecessary things. Eliminate all the unnecessary things as much as you can by organising yourself well with the environments. 9, Never believe anything without the proper evidences. 10, Always try to give more than you take. Because it is dignity/ character of the divinity within you. 🌎 As long as people continue to see themselves as separate from everything else, they lend themselves to being completely enslaved. Success depends on how well we relate to everything around us. Joy comes from that bliss of connectedness. I believe that unarmed truth and love will have the final word in reality. To love; you should have good heart. I am a good person until I see a person better than my standard of goodness. Being good is the progress towards a worthy cause. Love is God. Whoever lives in love, lives forever. How selfish it is to try to keep something forever? Love is all about nourishing, nurturing, sharing and expanding the love within you for all. The principle to which we adhere to is that we have kindness of love at heart for the whole of mankind. As long as there is the unnecessary differences within us; we can not live peacefully so we have to eliminate all the unnecessary differences among us so we can love all. People abilities may vary but not there true love. If we love a person/ God for a reason then we love the reason but not the person. No reason is the reason to love the person because true love never fails. So do not compare or measure the true love as first or the last but love all truly. If you love people truly then you can understand people. If you don't love then you don't understand people at all. People are controlled by system why? The Cyclical Consumption is the current economy all over the World. It is making the scarcity problems of the earth finite resources to deteriorate day by day. Current Monetary System is legalised theft. Real money is Gold and Silver. Scarcity gives the money more value. Real money won't lose it's value. When Governments stay away from Gold & Silver then very easy to transfer the wealth / resources to upper class the Rich (Corporatocracy) Elite. When the Governments are printing out more new fiat currency with reserve banks, our old currency is losing its purchasing power everyday. They are printing millions of currency everyday. All governments and laws are existing right now to transfer wealth to upper class the rich elite. The USA Government & other Governments are in many countries, bailed the investment banks & financial institutions in 2008 against the majority of the people. There is no democracy in any countries. Because of the Money System based on profits motive only above all else even humans lives and well-being. So, we do not have freedom to protect our values with the money so on. The violence, bankruptcy & all the negativities are build into the Monetary System of our society. All are owned (including ourselves) by Reserve Bank. Which is private cartel the corporation. So, in legal system, we are legally considered as chattel the properties. They make money in the capital markets with our birth certificates. They do not consider us as Humans. That's the truth. We are at the invisible war with the Elites (Corporatocracies). We have to fight for our Freedom. Resource Based Economy is the Solution. We have to declare the earth resources as the heritage of all the people of this world. So everyone has access to it. Please have your research about zeitgeist movement then you know the truth more. Truth About Health/Drugs Industry Because Of It Your Life At High Risk The drug industry is a 1/2 trillion dollars a year worldwide conglomerate. Almost 300 billions dollars just in North America. That is really big business. What would happen if everyone were well? There is no money in health. You see, good health makes a lot of sense but it doesn't make a lot of dollars. Because everything they do is toxic. Every drug they use, prescription drugs, all drugs are liver toxic, bar none. If you've had amalgam fillings put in your mouth by dentists. It is highly toxic. There's cancer because most of the chemos are themselves carcinogens. To view the tumor as the cancer and we know the tumor is not the cancer. The cancer industry is 200 billions dollars a year. The more work they get, the more profit there is. You have to dismantle; If the truth ever came out about what we would need to do. 30% of people of females in America are at risk of getting, will get cancer of the breast. The ones that are already dead have been grossly mistreated by the medical profession and by the government that supposedly is supposed to encourage free research and development of all possibilities. Why would medical doctors who studied medicine and practice medicine and are heavily funded by pharmaceutical companies why would they go and look into vitamins? That they never had the answer orthomolecular. And as more and more of our population start taking their health into their own hands, there's going to be even more and more of changes. It can't go on the way it is. The system is failing apart. We must make nutrition the primary prevention strategy for the population. You are what you eat. You are everything that you have ever done to yourself. The choices you make directly affect the outcome of your life. - (Food Matters Documentary in Netflix) 😊 Well, I truly love God. I am not religious but very spiritual person. So, I believe 1) Religion is the beliefs in someone experiences But spirituality is having my own experiences. The mainstream religions people promote religious ideology by giving guidelines and guide but In my spiritual life; I do not want anyone or anything between God and me to restrict my freedom to worship God. 2) We do not need any authorities to do good work. The god work is the good work always. In contrast; organised mainstream religions are claiming that they have the authorities to do God works as leaders so on. 3) God is not capable of doing wrong thing, change the past for us and create anything out of nothing for us. Nothing means not anything. So, even God is limited. The mainstream religious people believe that God is unlimited. 4) God wants us to take responsibilities for our righteousness life but not for all the consequences of our actions because they are continued to exist among us. So, How can god punish us for all our consequences? The mainstream religious people believe we are full of sins because of all our actions. 5) Freewill is an illusion. People always choose the perceived path of greatest pleasure. So, we do not have choices all the time. In contrast teachings of the mainstream religions are promoting people to do god's will always because we all have choices of freewill always. 6) We can not separate everything into groups. So, everything for good and evil and there's no success and failure for everything. If everything is real then real things can not be threatened. Once you come to understand that God/The Holy Spirit is in each of us, You will no longer need a Book to tell you how to live. Then why we need religious scriptures? The Virtue is the expression of the basic goodness in our actions. The Basic goodness is the fundamental worthiness of every individuals. We are worthy to God always in everything. 7) Beliefs in a cruel God makes a cruel man. No matter what; every living creatures has the right to live and What makes their life cheap? Everything depends on everything. Nothing too big or too small in value. We can not love and hate at the same time; Being a vegetarian means love without cruelty happily. The mainstream religious people are killing people and sacrificing animals in the name of God. They promote God's cruel punishments. The Punishment is endless for Sinners/Devil according to religious scriptures. But God is love always. Overcome hate with love. If all religions for peace, unity? No way. Because they are not for peace. 8) Well, The God gave us everything to go from moment to moment in our lives as we do our part and pray only to thank god then the Love is in progress. The Love is always for everyone. We are always worthy of the God's love. Our greatest fear is; not to be loved by anyone but we are all loved by someone. When we eliminate all our unnecessary differences among us then true peaceful life is possible with the true love. If we can't find the peace within ourselves then we will never find it anywhere else. 9) This is the Fight for independence and freedom of humanity to worship God freely without religious guide and guidelines to restrict us. Unnecessarily, We do not want third party controls over us in anything ; especially in spirituality. 10) Revive Survive Thrive. Sincerely, The Real Peacemaker against religious oppression. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpPZdKuDm8h-rJY kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnqteX2webaWiK8 kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6rbk5ejdtN8mas kzbin.info/www/bejne/rX3dlpShgKhpnKc kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmnZeZRur6lqoLs

Power should never be consolidated and should always be shifting like in Capitalism. Wolf says real socialism has never been done before, well I could say the same for capitalism too. Another falsehood. Henry Ford introduced the $5/day & 40 hour workweek in the 1920s. He had wanted to introduce it earlier, but was delayed by WWI. He did so because Ford studies noted more manufacturing errors & on the job accidents The UAW didn’t organize at Ford until the 1950´s

@Michael_qy9py
@Michael_qy9py 3 ай бұрын
@@Notpresent-1 No. I have no idea where you heard such nonsense. How does increasing your labor costs “crush” your competition? Auto Unions didn’t yet exist to parlay the highest offer at one manufacturer into similar wages at other manufacturers. There were no nationwide labor contracts covering all company blue collar workers. Auto jobs were coveted & employees stayed put (later “30 & out” was how they would be described -- 30 years work at one of the Big 3, then out - you retire with pension). He & Edsel had conducted studies early on showing manufacturing errors & on the job injuries were directly proportional the number of hours per day & number of days per week working. WWI & a chronic shortage of employees prevented implementation sooner. Ford also began sending empty buses into the Deep South to bring blacks & poor whites north to work in the industry. Detroit’s population nearly doubled from 1920 to 1930. It continued growing into the 1950s at a pace faster than other major American cities. While there had been dozens of automakers across the country in first decade or so of the 20th century, by the time these changes were implemented at Ford, the Big 3 were firmly entrenched- and made over 95% of all new cars manufactured in the U.S. GM surpassed Ford in number of cars produced in 1931, and retained that #1 rank for the next 75+ years. It isn’t conceivable to imagine that Henry & Edsel’s workplace reforms were designed to “crush competition.” Their principle rival GM was better run, managed, financed, and producing more cars. The only “crushing” Henry Ford was focused on in the first two decades of the 20th century was crushing his company’s stock share price. He did so by ending dividend payments. He pursued this effort because he wanted to buy back or buy out the various large shareholders who had been early investors in Ford. The most famous of these were the Dodge Brothers. The Dodges’ manufacturing company had mass produced all engines for Ford autos from 1903 to 1914. In lieu of payment for the earliest of those manufactured, the Dodges had been paid in Ford Motor Company stock. By 1914, Ford was producing its own engines. The Dodges (Horace & John) then launched their own Dodge Brothers Auto Company. Sadly, both died in or as a result of the Spanish Flu epidemic. Matilda Dodge sold the company to Chrysler in 1925. Dodge had existed as an independent car maker for barely a decade, but the Spanish Flu is what crushed it, not Henry Ford.

@@noahpaulette1490 That's just a stereotype. There are plenty of douche bag right wingers that talk over people like Bill O'Reilly (pretty much everyone on Fox News) and Sargon of Burger King. Everyone should be willing to hear out the other side even if they end up disagreeing.

@@noahpaulette1490 the type of person who refuses to listen with an open mind to dissenting opinions isn’t just on one side. There are a near equal amount of people I’d guess on each side who make the choice to follow an ideology as opposed to listen and criticize and come to their own conclusions. Either way I think one thing all people who have half a brain agree on is there needs to be more interest and respect of dissenting opinions

Just watch "Firing Line with William F. Buckley" then. He had so many great guests on over the years. Allen Ginsburg to Ronald Reagan. Muhammad Ali but also Thomas Sowell. And in cases where Buckley agrees with the guest, he brings on a counterpoint to them, such as with Sowell where Buckley brings on a feminist to debate him. That's a funny one.
