---------
That proposition was the subject of a November 5, 2019, debate hosted by the Soho Forum, a monthly debate series sponsored by Reason. Arguing in favor of the resolution was Richard D. Wolff, an economist at the University of Massachusetts and the author, most recently, of Understanding Marxism. Taking the other side was former Barron's economics editor Gene Epstein, who is also the Soho Forum's co-founder and director. Reason's Nick Gillespie served as moderator.
It was an Oxford-style debate, in which the audience votes on the resolution at the beginning and end of the event; the side that gains the most ground is victorious. It was a packed house, with about 450 people in attendance. The pre-debate vote found that 25 percent of the audience agreed that socialism was preferable to capitalism, 49.5 percent picked capitalism as the better system, and 25.5 percent were undecided. Despite a technical problem at the event itself, the Soho Forum was able to recover the final vote totals, which saw support for socialism drop by half a percentage point and support for capitalism increase to 71 percent.

The thing that struck me the most throughout the debate, is how two people with vehemently opposing views, respected each other, actively listened and could engage in heated conversation, without resorting to petty insults and underhandedness. They both remained lazer focused throughout and even managed to find some common ground. In parts of the debate they stood up and protected the others right to speak and be heard, when heckled by audience members. A lack of civility and the inability to respect a political opponent in this way, is perhaps the greatest threat to modern democracy, politics and freedom of expression we currently face. This is what serious people sound like. Very different from our world leaders isnt it?

Gene Epstein begins with an apology to Richard Wolff for an earlier outburst, he subsequently transitions into a critique that personalizes the concept of socialism to Wolff’s interpretations, rather than addressing the ideology in a broader sense. This strategy subtly shifts the debate from a general discussion to a more personal critique, which could be perceived as a nuanced form of personalization that edges towards underhanded critique, albeit within the bounds of formal respect. EDIT: Yeah... Gene is literally attacking Richard's character and whenever he touches on the primary subject he just gives examples of all the current problems we are living with...

I couldn't agree more. I'm about as far from an academic or intellectual as one could get, a truck driver as a matter or fact, and this was just like pure nourishment for my brain i was instantly so engaged i fired off 3 or 4 comments before Mr Wolf even finished his opening statement.lol My point is the gatekeepers think the average Joe has no interest in any sort of long form or in depth philosophical discussion/debate when that couldn't be further from the truth. These are the big ideas that will shape our future for better or worse and as a society we should be breaking them down, scrutinizing and re-scrutinizing them constantly from all sides n angles.
@jdavis7993
@jdavis7993 4 жыл бұрын
@@buckyflex1 Intellectualism is about sonder interest in the truth, not profession. I wouldn't make the assumption that a truck driver is incapable of being an intellectual. Frankly, discussion of important economic ideas *must* include the working class. That is the driving force behind Marxist ideology, whether you think economic systems should be capitalist or not. Frankly, I would prefer a capitalist system where some board chairs are just employee representatives, almost like a company parliament. The thing is, this might actually be less efficient than just having the government impose a required board structure. Conversation as to what the best form of the system would be is up for debate, but all stakeholders, including employees, should be considered.

Wolff doesn't really make any sort of point though... The gist of his whole argument is 'I want something else' But the thing he wants is already that we already have...? He just wants to force it onto everyone I guess...? He doesn't make anything close to a technical economic argument this whole debate. Not to mention that almost all of his 'points' about capitalism can be refuted by just silently pointing at Scandinavia...
@jd-yo2is
@jd-yo2is 4 жыл бұрын
Eros well Wolff’s whole argument is based on the whole Marxist idea that workers are exploited by wage labor. But we can look at Scandinavia and see some of the most most egalitarian and successful advanced economies of all time. Some of the highest GINIs, best economic mobility. All the social programs you could imagine... These are mixed ‘capitalist’ economies.. Free markets, large private, for profit sectors. This private sector and the growth it brings can be taxed to support social programs. Wolff’s whole argument that ‘capitalism’ is inherently exploitive doesn’t really stand up to common sense economics. At least domestically. Internationally is another long discussion to have.
@jd-yo2is

John Proctor labor isn’t the only input of production. Labor is important but not necessarily all that important in many companies. We can talk utopia all day and use that as a framework to criticize the current system. But ‘workers DESERVE to be paid their average product of labor or it’s EXPLOITATION’ is a pretty dumb oversimplified starting off point.
@jd-yo2is
@jd-yo2is 4 жыл бұрын
John Proctor ‘some owners treated their slaves well and taught them to read’ You missed the entire point... As I said...the most advanced, economically mobile, richest, egalitarian system OF ALL TIME... That’s an achievement bud... But you just whine that it’s not good enough because of some flawed and oversimplified philosophy about 'exploitation' and baselessly compare it to slavery.

@@misterauctor7353nah, there is definite need for reform. Even if you are a capitalist, there are glaringly obvious issues with our current system, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Where the educated socialist and educated capitalist differ on this train of thought, is much like Mr. Epstein said, the libertarian capitalist prefers less regulation and only government intervention to prevent monopolies. The socialist, depending on their belief, says either by violence or democracy we must overthrow the entire system and implement a socialist system, usually through massive government intervention. But to say we need no reform is frankly idiotic.

If you actually analyzed the graphs you would see that the percentage who agreed with the statement remained stable before and after the debate. It was the undecided crowd who added onto the disagree section. Like the moderator stated at the beginning, only people who voted at the beginning of the debate could vote at the end, indicating that while practically the same amount of people agreed from the beginning to the end of the debate, the amount that disagreed grew substantially, taking from the undecided portion.

Spongebob and squidward need to seize the Krusty Krab. While Spongebob provides the labor for creating the burgers and squidward runs the front end of the business taking orders from the customers, the capitalist (pig) crab pockets the profit while giving the two workers a pittance. Nobody earns the value of their labor. Obviously this is why spongebob and squidward live in squalor and discomfort next to Patrick, who literally lives under a rock, while the bourgeoise live elsewhere. Krabs justifies his profit because he procured the capital to create the restaurant and owns the formula, while actively doing nothing of value for his workers or his society. Plankton, meanwhile, is a reflection of the class struggle as he is ruthlessly outmatched at every turn due to the inherent inequality in the system. Neither worker can “choose” to get another job because the reality of Bikini Bottom is that there aren’t any other reasonable options. Squidward obviously does not voluntarily wish to be there. There is a guise of individualism and self determination thrown over a flawed system. Unfortunately, as long as they can feel superior to Patrick, who is lower in society, they too believe they can one day be like Mr. Krabs.

MrIHadToDoIt a good example of why not all unions are good. In this example, it gives undue to power to police, who are not working class. Their relationship to economic production is enforcement of the laws instituted by the ruling class (private capital). Unions are beneficial for the working class to collectively bargain, aka to have any chance at bargaining at all instead of simply being fired for asking for more equality. The purpose of the police union is to shield cops from the consequences of their unlawful behavior, which is disproportionately used to afflict the working class

It was also the FDA and other regulatory agencies which were slowing down the shipment of masks when people could have used them the most. Except the financial crash was already being telegraphed well before we o ew covid even existed. If you go back to last year, half way through last year, to channels like Re Education and Beau of the Fifth Column, they break it down in a way that laypeople can understand- using the evidence provided by expert economists. But they warned of the coming downturn, and what regular people could do to prepare for it. So the crash was forecast well before covid. Covid incited it, perhaps a month or two before it would have happened, and it certainly made it worse than it otherwise would have been. But it would have happened anyway.

It was good, and the Capitalism’s argument was full of strawmaning. For example, the hypothetical about a socialist party winning the majority of votes of the ballot box, then introducing full blown socialism overnight. However, Socialism’s argument included the history of the process of Capitalism, it was not an overnight change from Faudism but a centuries long process. Just logically, that’s exactly how most ideas come to fruition. So it’s a bit of a strawman argument from Capitalism, which raises questions about integrity and trustworthiness.

@@mr12aT This debate was about socialism vs capitalism. But all that wolff was arguing was about why capitalism is so bad, that it is unstable, that and that. He never once presented the benefits of socialism. The capitalism guy literally said capitalism is not perfect and he listed the disadvantages, he said we should be careful with capitalism, and also talked about the benefits. Wolf never one talked about the benefits of socialism only why capitalism is bad. He did not talk about the disadvantages of socialism. If someone tries to sell me a car and all he does is criticizing my current car, without talking about the the functionality of the new car,. I know he talks bullshit and he knows that too, and is just trying to con me. I never trust people that only talk about the disadvantages of the product, system, person, that they don't like without actually talking about what he is offering. Capitalism is a grotesque game of musical chairs, in which 99 percent lose, then propaganda attempts to get them to blame themselves. Socialism is parasitism, plain and simple. It works until you run out of victims to tax. socialist propaganda encourages the cannibals to murder and gorge, until there are no more John Galts to murder.

🏠 Stupid people System is the problem 🏡 Our Life should be around these Great Qualities..... 1, Show all living creatures; all the love and kindness as much as you can. 2, Only try to be honest with yourself. If you try to be honest with others, you will get into big trouble soon or later. 3, Aim only one target at a time; otherwise you are chasing two rabbits and you will miss both. So, the reason behind it. Have one powerful reason and never ever give up the one you want the most. 4, Don't try to be good person only but be the powerful person. We will grow to be the one or we will die. There is no other choice. 5, Always learn and look for to improve something your life. 6, You are not alone. Love and faith the high power reduces unnecessary stress in life. But never completely rely on it. 7, Success and happiness are the byproducts of our usefulness. So, always increase the possibility of success. 8, Life is not going to be easy. Because of our unnecessary things. Eliminate all the unnecessary things as much as you can by organising yourself well with the environments. 9, Never believe anything without the proper evidences. 10, Always try to give more than you take. Because it is dignity/ character of the divinity within you. 🌎 As long as people continue to see themselves as separate from everything else, they lend themselves to being completely enslaved. Success depends on how well we relate to everything around us. Joy comes from that bliss of connectedness. I believe that unarmed truth and love will have the final word in reality. To love; you should have good heart. I am a good person until I see a person better than my standard of goodness. Being good is the progress towards a worthy cause. Love is God. Whoever lives in love, lives forever. How selfish it is to try to keep something forever? Love is all about nourishing, nurturing, sharing and expanding the love within you for all. The principle to which we adhere to is that we have kindness of love at heart for the whole of mankind. As long as there is the unnecessary differences within us; we can not live peacefully so we have to eliminate all the unnecessary differences among us so we can love all. People abilities may vary but not there true love. If we love a person/ God for a reason then we love the reason but not the person. No reason is the reason to love the person because true love never fails. So do not compare or measure the true love as first or the last but love all truly. If you love people truly then you can understand people. If you don't love then you don't understand people at all. People are controlled by system why? The Cyclical Consumption is the current economy all over the World. It is making the scarcity problems of the earth finite resources to deteriorate day by day. Current Monetary System is legalised theft. Real money is Gold and Silver. Scarcity gives the money more value. Real money won't lose it's value. When Governments stay away from Gold & Silver then very easy to transfer the wealth / resources to upper class the Rich (Corporatocracy) Elite. When the Governments are printing out more new fiat currency with reserve banks, our old currency is losing its purchasing power everyday. They are printing millions of currency everyday. All governments and laws are existing right now to transfer wealth to upper class the rich elite. The USA Government & other Governments are in many countries, bailed the investment banks & financial institutions in 2008 against the majority of the people. There is no democracy in any countries. Because of the Money System based on profits motive only above all else even humans lives and well-being. So, we do not have freedom to protect our values with the money so on. The violence, bankruptcy & all the negativities are build into the Monetary System of our society. All are owned (including ourselves) by Reserve Bank. Which is private cartel the corporation. So, in legal system, we are legally considered as chattel the properties. They make money in the capital markets with our birth certificates. They do not consider us as Humans. That's the truth. We are at the invisible war with the Elites (Corporatocracies). We have to fight for our Freedom. Resource Based Economy is the Solution. We have to declare the earth resources as the heritage of all the people of this world. So everyone has access to it. Please have your research about zeitgeist movement then you know the truth more. Truth About Health/Drugs Industry Because Of It Your Life At High Risk The drug industry is a 1/2 trillion dollars a year worldwide conglomerate. Almost 300 billions dollars just in North America. That is really big business. What would happen if everyone were well? There is no money in health. You see, good health makes a lot of sense but it doesn't make a lot of dollars. Because everything they do is toxic. Every drug they use, prescription drugs, all drugs are liver toxic, bar none. If you've had amalgam fillings put in your mouth by dentists. It is highly toxic. There's cancer because most of the chemos are themselves carcinogens. To view the tumor as the cancer and we know the tumor is not the cancer. The cancer industry is 200 billions dollars a year. The more work they get, the more profit there is. You have to dismantle; If the truth ever came out about what we would need to do. 30% of people of females in America are at risk of getting, will get cancer of the breast. The ones that are already dead have been grossly mistreated by the medical profession and by the government that supposedly is supposed to encourage free research and development of all possibilities. Why would medical doctors who studied medicine and practice medicine and are heavily funded by pharmaceutical companies why would they go and look into vitamins? That they never had the answer orthomolecular. And as more and more of our population start taking their health into their own hands, there's going to be even more and more of changes. It can't go on the way it is. The system is failing apart. We must make nutrition the primary prevention strategy for the population. You are what you eat. You are everything that you have ever done to yourself. The choices you make directly affect the outcome of your life. - (Food Matters Documentary in Netflix) 😊 Well, I truly love God. I am not religious but very spiritual person. So, I believe 1) Religion is the beliefs in someone experiences But spirituality is having my own experiences. The mainstream religions people promote religious ideology by giving guidelines and guide but In my spiritual life; I do not want anyone or anything between God and me to restrict my freedom to worship God. 2) We do not need any authorities to do good work. The god work is the good work always. In contrast; organised mainstream religions are claiming that they have the authorities to do God works as leaders so on. 3) God is not capable of doing wrong thing, change the past for us and create anything out of nothing for us. Nothing means not anything. So, even God is limited. The mainstream religious people believe that God is unlimited. 4) God wants us to take responsibilities for our righteousness life but not for all the consequences of our actions because they are continued to exist among us. So, How can god punish us for all our consequences? The mainstream religious people believe we are full of sins because of all our actions. 5) Freewill is an illusion. People always choose the perceived path of greatest pleasure. So, we do not have choices all the time. In contrast teachings of the mainstream religions are promoting people to do god's will always because we all have choices of freewill always. 6) We can not separate everything into groups. So, everything for good and evil and there's no success and failure for everything. If everything is real then real things can not be threatened. Once you come to understand that God/The Holy Spirit is in each of us, You will no longer need a Book to tell you how to live. Then why we need religious scriptures? The Virtue is the expression of the basic goodness in our actions. The Basic goodness is the fundamental worthiness of every individuals. We are worthy to God always in everything. 7) Beliefs in a cruel God makes a cruel man. No matter what; every living creatures has the right to live and What makes their life cheap? Everything depends on everything. Nothing too big or too small in value. We can not love and hate at the same time; Being a vegetarian means love without cruelty happily. The mainstream religious people are killing people and sacrificing animals in the name of God. They promote God's cruel punishments. The Punishment is endless for Sinners/Devil according to religious scriptures. But God is love always. Overcome hate with love. If all religions for peace, unity? No way. Because they are not for peace. 8) Well, The God gave us everything to go from moment to moment in our lives as we do our part and pray only to thank god then the Love is in progress. The Love is always for everyone. We are always worthy of the God's love. Our greatest fear is; not to be loved by anyone but we are all loved by someone. When we eliminate all our unnecessary differences among us then true peaceful life is possible with the true love. If we can't find the peace within ourselves then we will never find it anywhere else. 9) This is the Fight for independence and freedom of humanity to worship God freely without religious guide and guidelines to restrict us. Unnecessarily, We do not want third party controls over us in anything ; especially in spirituality. 10) Revive Survive Thrive. The current system we have is total shit. It's a fantasy that deregulation will "fix" Capitalism. We knows exactly when you let the reins off of corporations, they screw everyone over. We need a good balance. Socialize healthcare and have some basic human services. Help ensure workers rights. If you're saying that a company can't manage to run successfully in a society where people have socialized services and reasonable rights, then they deserve to fail. There will be plenty others who will be able to manage it. I'll say it again, anyone who thinks that we should let wealthy private companies and individuals run this country (which they already do) unrestrained is living in a fantasy if they believe that it'll magically fix everything.

This debate goes up with some of the greatest of all time, like the Lincoln-Douglas debates which preceded the American civil war. Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas were very close friends despite having opposite ideologies surrounding slavery, and were respectful of one another even while debating. Incredibly, though he would die only two months later, Douglas would switch his affiliations in favor of the Union as a result of the United States Army surrender at Fort Sumter. Now allies with his former opponent, Douglas even suggested privately to Lincoln that instead of sending 75,000 Union troops to suppress the Confederate Army, he send 200,000, saying "You do not know the dishonest purposes of these men as I do." Douglas would spend the short remainder of his life rallying support for his former opponent.
