Sonny Crockett's first partner Eddie Rivera is blown up when a car is rigged by a mysterious drug lord.

Just pure epicness. Crockett's suit, the first running gag of him shouting 'No' before an explosion, and groundbreaking drama. This is also the first time I'm seeing Crockett's shirt as bluish-green. I don't know why I used to think it was sky blue or something 🤔

How was it at the drive in? I’m in Arkansas about 5 miles from one of the drive ins for hundreds of miles. They do some 80’s flicks from time to time, but the first Miami Vice would be super cool to see on a big screen.

Crockett saved his own life by bending down to pick up his sunglasses. He starts out the season by losing a partner, but gains one in Tubbs, which endure for five seasons. I love the part where the lieutenant shows up at the scene and Switek and Zito automatically start making jokes and he admonishes them for their sick sense of humor and then asks where Crockett is and then listens to Crockett's synopsis of what happened. I love Zito's flinch when he realizes that he's been disrespectful when he was joking about the drug sniffing dogs.

I know it's generally thought that Crockett and Tubbs didn't become burned out until the end of the series, but i think they were showing signs of burning out even during the pilot. There's the moment where things get heated between Crockett and Lt. Rodriguez, and it almost seems like Crockett is about to quit the force before he gets out of the car and quietly walks away. And Tubbs came close to gunning down Calderone in front of dozens of officers, which would have been the end of his career. Throughout the entire series, Crockett and Tubbs both express that they're getting tired of having to work within a corrupt system and put their lives on the line to bust drug dealers and corrupt officials only for them to go free. What happened in the finale was simply the final straw.

Yeah, the show did a great job establishing how lived-in Crockett was a vice cop. Like very early in Season 1 when Sonny and Gina were having dinner on his boat, the show established Sonny's years of experience through his monologue to Gina that he felt like he was getting too old for the life of a vice cop. The show also did a great job of making Sonny's personal relationships with Gina and Caroline feel authentic from the beginning.

Jimmy Smiths went onto have a great acting career after this show. So him getting blown up in the pilot didn’t hurt his career. They don’t make shows like this anymore. If they tried to remake this it would not be the same. It had that Scarface Miami feel to it, and when you watched this you knew it was pure 80s. You think this show didn’t have a big impact and influence on Lethal Weapon? The writers and directors of the Lethal Weapon movies can’t tell me they weren’t inspired by this show.
