Edith (Jean Stapleton) kicks Mr Lumis out of the house when she overhears Archie (Carroll O'Connor) explaining to Gloria (Sally Struthers) and Mike (Rob Reiner), that she made a pass at him.
From Season 3, Episode 3 'The Threat': The Bunkers' house guest is the new, much younger wife of a war buddy. Archie, who can't take his eyes off of her, believes that she made a pass at him, and Edith overhears him telling Gloria and Mike so.

About All In The Family:
One of the most acclaimed comedy series of all time, All in the Family with Archie Bunker as the irascible, highly opinionated, working-class family man who viewed the world on his terms and his terms only. When not arguing with his liberal son-in-law, "Meathead," Archie took refuge in his long-suffering wife, Edith, who tries her best to understand Archie's conservative ways and outdated beliefs.

It was such a true moment where Edith felt hurt by what happened and showed how much she loved Archie! 😍 I had the pleasure of seeing Jean Stapleton briefly when I worked at the Robinsons-May Beverly Hills store. She was shopping in the costume jewelry department, and I was too "star struck" to go over and say hello, and didn't want to intrude. Just being able to see "Edith" in person is my own sweet memory! 🥰

It depends. If your husband looks like Archie (overweight, out of shape and generally unattractive) I wouldn't worry about it. If that is the case, any kiss that your husband may receive on the mouth would be a "pity kiss" the kind you give old people or people who are just downright unattractive)

That scene was completely innocent. It was not a seductive kiss. I don't think that woman was trying to hit on Archie... who is DUKE? Her boyfriend/fiance ? I think Edith is blowing things out of proportion. I mean maybe she doesn't have to like the woman or ever invite her back but I think this is just over-reaction.

Where she tells her guest if she explains any more, she'll cry....and she just about does with all the cameras, makeup people, director, lights, sound booms all around her. Nuh, uh. Edith kicked her out because of Archie's lie to Mike and Gloria about the meaning of the kiss. You'd have to watch the ENTIRE episode to understand. And at the very end (not included in the video clip), Mrs. Lumis figured out why Edith did what she did, and she calls Archie out on it.
@themermaidstale5008
@themermaidstale5008 Жыл бұрын
It’s all Archie’s fault. Gloria and Mike must have been standing there for some of the interaction before the kiss. Bobbi-Jo didn’t make a pass and Archie knew it, but to assuage his ego, because he was attracted to her, he quickly switched to “yeah, she made a pass”, which Edith heard. Edith believes in Archie took what he said as truth and she had never noticed Archie’s attraction to their guest. Belief in what Archie falsely said about “the pass” is why Edith made Bobbi-Jo leave.

There are times where I am actually ASTONISHED at just how unbelievably good both Carroll O’Connor and Jean Stapleton were in All in the Family. All in the Family’s Writing was excellent, of course, but they turned their respective, potentially one-note, characters into real, three-dimensional, flesh & blood people. There was nothing about their portrayals of Archie and Edith that didn’t make you feel that these people existed, and that they could be living down the street from you.

That woman didn't just "fall" into that outfit. She "slid" into it & enjoyed the attention she received because of it. She kissed Archie on the lips - not a peck, but a full-on. Then, she showed Edith the sleeping gown that she intended to wear while sleeping on the sofa. She 100% knew what she was doing. Edith just called her out on it & the woman had to take some responsibility for her actions - except, she didn't & it was going to negatively affect Archie's friendship with her husband/Archie's friend.

No, that was not a pass! If she had grabbed him on the butt and said, see you later tonight or something like that that would’ve been a pass. But that was a sweet kiss on the mouth and, yes, was it wrong, yes, but there’s a big difference between an innocent mistake by not using correct judgment, and being an on our all out pass. You could tell she was absolutely confused about what she had done wrong. Stop being so judgmental of people. You don’t know what they grew up around or what they see is right because of their environment.

That was merely a "pity kiss".. the kind of kiss that you would either give to old people or to overweight and out of shape people like Archie. Just as Archie's son in law said..who would want to make a pass at Archie?

Bobbi Jo didn’t want Archie’s crusty behind. She just enjoyed the attention. Archie, on the other hand, was attracted to her. He felt guilty about it and conveniently used what he thought would be a little white lie to cover up his guilt feelings and stroke his ego.

I know they were standing there but i get the impression they didn't see the kiss. Because when Archie pushed them back into the kitchen Gloria said, "What's going on Daddy" I did see Mike's expression and he said, "What are you so uptight about just because you are feeling guilty about being attracted to bobbyjo". Mike said nothing about the kiss. And then mike said "she made a pass at you"? So both Gloria and Mike sounded like they didn't know about the kiss. It was Archie's big mouth that got him in trouble he brought up the Kiss moment. Archie shouldn't have said nothing or just said well what are to looking at? If they don't mention the kiss you don't mention the kiss. Even though seemingly they were standing there when it happen.
