I am a professional videomaker and I agree with you on what you said about editing, jump cuts and B-Roll, now online they think they can get used to people who can't speak and insert a jump every moment. Especially on journalistic reports, first a rough cut is made and then a continuous flow is created with the B-roll. Great, I'll continue to follow you also because I just purchased the Pocket 3 too.
@jermsMREКүн бұрын
Just bought the pocket 3 for my face camera for my reviews. I only recently started showing my face in my videos. This video really made me rethink some things. Particularly jump cuts. I tend to use jump cuts a lot, but in my main food camera view you can't tell. My face camera, you can. Which has been a frustrating learning curve. I just learned the crop method to make the flow better, but watching this made me realize I need to do things differently. Great video, great advice and I will be trying some different things. Thanks!!

I believe editing has taught me how to film more effectively. I hold my shots longer than I used to. I film a few different intros in case something looks or sounds bad when I’m at a location I won’t be returning to. I’m an amateur who finds joy in making little videos. Ive recently learned stabilization in Davinci can make footage look really warped like jello. I was panning with Sony ZVE1 in dynamic stabilization. It looked jerky. Stabilization in post made it look worse. Static shots can look so much nicer.
@VicBarry11 ай бұрын
Hey April, yeah. Stabilization in post can be tricky. Might be worth looking at catalyst browse and using that to stabilise the the ZVE1 footage and then edit it

That "bad audio" advice is so true. Thinking back on some interesting video topics I stumbled upon in YT searches, I literally left the video without watching more than 20 seconds because the audio was horrendous. Its like nails on a chalk board. It sounded like the topic was there and the information was as well, but that audio was a killer for my ears and brain.

The Jump cut is an eye opener for me. I haven’t gone through any real kind of editing schooling. Just loved movies my whole life, watch a lot of KZbin and I basically pick out what looks good and try to learn from it. Never really thought of them as annoying but this makes sense. As far as editing how would you suggest color grading on an iPhone? Do all editing apps have them? I currently use splice
@VicBarry11 ай бұрын
Depends on the app you use to be honest. While the iPhone screen is pretty accurate color wise the size of the screen is the biggest obstacle. Lumafusion and CapCut do offer cooor grading functionality. Definitely worth a look. On the editing side of things, watching movies is a great way to pick up a few tips especially around angles and pacing. Next time you watch a movie time how long each scene is on screen / shot before it changes

New Feature Requests for the DJI OSMO Pocket 3 1. Add a dwelling time for each of up to four settable movement positions in Motion Time-Lapse Mode. As each of the four settable positions programmed into a motion time-lapse sequence is reached, the end user could set from 1 to 10 seconds of a pause in gimbal movement as each programmed position is reached during the sequence before the gimbal moves forward to the next programmed position. This would yield a much more dynamic and professional looking, smoother motion time-lapse sequence. 2. In Motion Time-Lapse Mode the ability to set movement ease in and ease out settings from 0.5 to 3 seconds for each programmable gimbal position before gimbal movement normal progression rate is reached. 3. True 24.00p filming speed. 4. The ability to set time-lapse sequences based on 24.00p. 5. The ability to be able to record from the DJI Mic 2 and from a plugged in via USB audio source at the same time. 6. Adding a 10 Bit 4:2:2 recordable video codec. 7. Please add zoom capability when shooting in all time-lapse modes.

So true on the talking head stuff. Sometimes I start watching a video and end up yelling at the screen, "Shut the hell up and get to the point!" I've noticed that your videos tend to be just the right length to get the information out without droning on. I tend to have several tabs open of things I want to watch. Kind of a que of videos on a subject. A long, drawn-out video filled with fluff and filler is a click-out soon for me. Granted, if I'm watching short films a little longer if it fits the story. Or if watching ambient videos then sure, long is ideal. But for informational videos, I don't want or need a 30-60 minute video. So thank you for both the great information provided and for not droning on.

Thank you Vic, I do have another type of question regarding the editing of Pocket 3 footage. I've watched your other videos about the settings and I'm on Pro every time I shoot. But when I'm in 16:9 the footage looks a lot like from a smartphone, a bit "fish-eye-ish..." when I bring it into FCPX. If I crop the edges to left and right, the middle of the image is fine. But then, when I watch your footage in fullscreen, it's all fine. Mine is crap in fullscreen. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

I thought you were going to talk about connecting the pocket 3 via USB-C as a hard drive. I was is doing this (USB-3) and about the third try, I got a bunch of errors in fcpx. I was simply dragging the clips onto the time-line. The settings were for import clips to be copied into the library (on a local HD). On the 3rd project, I disconnected the pocket 3, assuming the clips were in the library. However, the audio tracks turned red and I got yellow triangles, locking up the time-line. Huh! Everything should be in the library, right? Does disconnecting the pocket 3 (external HD) cause this when the library files are local?

@ 4:30 Uhhhh, no it isn't Vic. Editing is about the artful assembly of shots to create an idea or an emotion in the mind of the viewer. Editing is what Hitchcock used to refer to as "Pure Cinema." Editing isn't really about "cutting," as it's not really viscisection. There are two main kinds of editing. 1. Continuity editing. 2. Juxtaposition editing, and even there may well be a third kind of editing referred to as "cross cutting." The first kind is employed to be unnoticable by the viewer, and draws no attention to itself. Only the scenes assembled are visible in service of the story. The second kind is a type of editing which deliberately calls attention to itself, where one shot is put next to a greatly contrasting shot in action and pace in order to have a specific effect on the viewing audience. This kind of editing was invented by the early Russian Director Sergei Eisenstein and it was first used in a film he directed called "Strike," and more famously, in his film "Battleship Potemkin." The French "New Wave" filmmakers also used this second style. The late 1960's American episodict TV show Ironside also famously used this second kind of abrupt jump cut style. The third kind is called cross cutting, and is popularised by an obscure American Director named Christopher Nolan.
@VicBarry11 ай бұрын
Hey Mark As a professional in this field, I'm well aware of the complexities and artistic dimensions of editing, including the styles you've mentioned like continuity, juxtaposition, and cross-cutting. However, it's crucial to tailor my approach based on the audience's level of expertise and their specific needs. In this video most of my audience is at the beginner level. Therefore, the focus is on practical and accessible editing techniques suitable for those just starting out. Discussing advanced theories and the historical context of editing, while intellectually enriching, is not aligned with their current requirements and could potentially overwhelm them. I understand the importance of matching the depth of content with the audience's ability to absorb and apply it. The section you referred to, where I emphasize 'cutting,' is designed to introduce beginners to essential editing concepts in a straightforward and digestible manner. I trust you apply these more advanced techniques in your own work, and if you've any examples by all means send them my way, and I totally commend your knowledge :) Advanced editing concepts are a topic for another time and audience. Here, I'm all about giving new editors the tools they need to start creating, without overcomplicating the process
@markjob635411 ай бұрын
@@VicBarry Well, it's OK to learn new things isn't it Vic ? My point is editing is filmmaking. Hitchcock said he actually hated having to go out and shoot the picture, because he thought he really made the movie in writing the script and in editing it after. OK. So by all means, let's cut out all the bad stuff and keep all the good stuff. 😃

@markjob6354 @vicbarry -- A professional is well studied in their craft and is well-versed on the nuances of how to bring their vision to fruition. A TRUE professional is one who realizes that others out there might share the same vision but don't exactly know how to do it so they share their knowledge and wisdom much in the way a young child is raised. They look to educate. By demonstrating fundamentals. One thing I've learned in my old age is that regardless of how much you really know, nobody truly respects a know-it-all. Been guilty of it myself. Mark, would you like to share your wisdom with us budding Hitchcocks in a way that we can understand? I mean, why let all of that awesomeness die with you?
