The tomato and lead plates rings true - and even now, canned tomatoes have a plastic liner inside the tin - because the acidity (citric, ascorbic and malic) in the tomato attacks the metal coating - and without the liner, results in metallic compounds contaminating the tomatoes. Would not be surprised if these acids could also react with lead. Would have had a "pleasant" side effect of making the tomatoes taste sweeter. Also, as part of the solanaceous family, many of them are toxic, so could understand confusion. Example of toxic members of the family - including the fruit of the potato plant, which looks strikingly like a small green tomato. :)
