Oscars are still very much even to this day politically motivated. If that movie earned an oscar, there would always be in question wether the oscars supported the "story" or not. No way that would end up well. He knew it wasn’t that he was wrong, it’s just that he knew that no matter how hard he tried nothing would ever change. This was proven to be correct at the end when after he did all that for his younger brother telling his jail stories and that it’s wrong and taking him away from the white supremacjst gang, what happens? That black dude shoots him anyway. So it’s like the film is coming off like it’s showing you how bad racism is, and it is..but in the end it’s not that racism is bad..the message is that it’s inevitable.

Kind of reminds me of *De Niro* as Bickie in *Taxi Driver....* A disturbing role, can only become classic if you get the right actor. Another good movie, in this same vein, was 1992's *Romper Stomper* with *Russell Crow,* another actor not given near enough credit for his body of work. Although they were not on Black people, the Orientals caught *HELL* in that one!! I actually like low budget films that cause a stir. *100 Million dollar Big Hollywood Monsters,* can seem detached, and unrealistic, while cheaper / grittier films that almost look like you could have filmed them in your back yard using your lunch money, feel like they have more purpose really.

Ed Norton is undoubtedly one of, if not the, best actor of his generation. Wonderful in Fight Club, 25th Hour, Birdman and Larry Flyntt...He should have won ‘supporting’ for Primal Fear, but it’s American History X that’s his finest performance. How he didn’t win Best Actor for this, is one of the great Academy Award mysteries. Blistering, sensational film and he’s at the absolute peak of his game in it.

I fear actual basement meetings of disturbed individuals far more than the humanization of extremely troubled people, and it perhaps being a dangerous path for some politically activist idealogues. You can only change the world if you first understand the world. Including the evil within your own soul, perhaps especially the evil within your own soul.
