The Helmet problem is so annoying and is a misconception in film/tv that needs to die already. Unironically, in an ideal world the audition process for any character like Master Chief that is known for wearing a helmet should literally consist of any auditioning actor being handed a box with nothing but a visor with colored lenses/eye holes and being told to "put this on your head and show me 12 different emotions while wearing it." It's so obnoxious that this belief is so prevalent because it completely dismisses the entire concept of body language as an expressive acting talent. Honestly it really makes me question how many people in the industry are unable to actually understand any sort of human emotions and that really is a disturbing prospet.

Every time an actor wants to use the “The audience needs to see my face to feel the emotion” bit, I point to Hugo Weaving in V for Vendetta! That man had to wear a Guy Fawkes mask or hid his face in shadow for every scene V was in. And yet, he was able to show a huge range of emotion throughout that movie! Every time Pascal Halo over here emotes, all I see is desperate overacting.

every voice actor, like, ever can prove how vapid that idea is. If you, as an actor, can't portray emotion with your voice and your body language at least as much as your face.... your not a very good actor, honestly. Sure the audience has to work a bit harder to pick up the subtleties.... but catering to the smoothest brains in the room has never improved a piece of art in the first place. Master Chief became one of the most popular videogame protagonists of a generation without ever once showing his face, so it kind of boggles my mind that 25 years later a big-budget TV adaptation can't manage to figure out how to simply not treat the audience like a bunch of simpletons who need everything telegraphed to them as bluntly as possible.

Halo: All UNSC personnel are briefed on and required to read, to the letter, the Cole Protocol. Emergency Priority Order 098831A-1 states that no retreating UNSC ship may plot a course through or towards human colonized space. Upon imminent capture all personnel must engage evacuation procedures and all data matrices must be wiped before the ship is armed for self destruction. For me, the moment I loved Arbiter as a character is when he's on his first new assignment and the regular captain is like "You're a piece of shit on a suicide mission, but my men are not; when the choice comes, I WILL put my men first." And Arbiter from the gravelly depths of his military mind responds "That makes two of us." And the captain is pleasantly surprised. Potato graphics; nothing fancy; just two men of war on a ship speaking candidly knowing what's at stake. That's all you need.
@Alex_Fahey
@Alex_Fahey 8 ай бұрын
That line also doubles as a veiled insult since it can easily have the meaning of "I feel the same way about you" or the surface meaning of the Arbiter viewing his own life as expendable. Regardless of which, the priority for the common soldier comes through and earns a modicum of Rtas' respect.

How each format has handled the Fall of Reach: The Novels/Expanded Content - The defence of Reach lasts about THREE HOURS (at least how long it lasted before it lost the Orbital MAC Stations, after which there was nothing stopping Covenant ships from moving in to glass the planet) as a demonstration of how vast the scaling is between Humanity and the Covenant and to set up how desperate the situation is by the time Combat Evolved starts with novels and short stories consistently establishing that Reach was second only to Earth in terms of importance to Humanity and the war. The Games - Reach is built up throughout the trilogy (and briefly referenced in ODST) as one of the greatest defeats for Humanity yet it turns into the event that ultimately triggers a domino effect to save them. Then when we actually see it, it begins as an attempt to mobilise against the Covenant but eventually the Spartans, Troopers and ODSTs get out manoeuvred, outnumbered and outgunned as the Covenant start flowing in faster than situations can be resolved until eventually the remnants of Noble Team forced to put everything on the line to get Humanity's last hope off the planet before it becomes another ball of glass drifting in the void, with Noble Six turning down his one opportunity to escape the planet to protect the Pillar of Autumn before falling to endless hoards of Elites and Grunts, surrounded by just over a dozen Spartans that suffered similar fates which (alongside Noble Team getting picked off one by one from Long Night of Solace onwards) enforces the fact that the Covenant are such an overwhelming force that even Spartans are not invincible against them. The TV Show - The direct combat lasts just over 1 episode, we don't even see any Silver Team in armour, we don't get any acknowledgement of what the other Spartan teams are doing, the Covenant aspect is seemingly limited to just Elites, Jackals and 1 Brute Chieftain (whereas in the main continuity both sides threw everything they had available at each other) and after its focus episode is finished, the main characters go to a random planet to do Soren's Loyalty Mission or something...

@@redfalcon2919 thanks. I think that the game and novels are good for completing what they're aiming for but given details such as how the seriousness of the revelation of the Covenant being on the planet is in Winter Contingency until the end with the Zealots or how some of the time jumps feel arbitrary (especially the gap between Sword Base and Nightfall), I prefer the depiction in Fall of Reach and First Strike where - despite it's value to Humanity - the Covenant just treat the planet the same as all the others: search for any Forerunner artefacts, then glass it and move on with ruthless efficiency.

@@patchmoulton5438 Same, as a story I think Reach falls flat too often for me to love it too much, though I will say it has some of the best character writing in the series. I 1000% agree with all the discrepancies between the books and game. Honestly I always found the Spartan 3 change to be such a waste. They had a cool idea and interesting purpose, instead it now is just, Spartan 2 'lite'. That and I like how one of the main reason Ackerson made the Spartan 3 program was to cut costs because as a surprise to no-one, the UNSC would be in quite the financial crisis. Yet they can somehow afford to make custom armors for their Spartan 3 team, armors which couldn't be used by them in the first place. Shit's wild.
@HarleyHerbert
@HarleyHerbert 8 ай бұрын
@@redfalcon2919 Plus the armour even in its default unaltered state is the one thing most expensive about them, apparently being as expensive as an entire ship, so it makes no sense to outfit Spartan 3s in that armour if the purpose of them is to make cheaper Spartans. Hell it's probably even one of the most expensive pieces of equipment ever built by humanity. Not just in monetary cost either, a lot of the materials it's made of are rare and hard to find, most colonies have been wiped out or cut off from Earth, and transporting goods between planets has surely become dangerous and difficult so having the required materials to make more armour would be extremely difficult. Also I always felt that Reach as depicted in the game was far too lightly defended for what it is. Reach was close to Earth, home to the UNSC's military, primary location for military research and development. had the largest shipyards, and was overall one of the most important planets to humanity even before the war. Yet as @patchmoulton5438 mentioned, there was no fleet shown defending the planet, the orbital platforms were nowhere to be seen, from what we saw the forces defending the planet were so few in number and mainly army personnel with standard equipment, and the response to the enemy threat was slow and light. Perhaps they possibly thought it would fit the story better this way but I think had they shown Reach as it was previously depicted it would only better fit the tone of the game, at first building that false hope better by showing off the scale of the defences and how impenetrable the planet seemed, then hitting in the grim reality of how bad it is when you see all of that get destroyed so easily. Instead it seemed in the game like there was barely much to stop the covenant. Plus a team of Spartan 3s not in mjolnir armour would've made what they accomplished more impressive while also making people care more about their safety because they wouldn't have the tough armour to protect them

It is what you show to people to teach them about Character Assassination, Faithful Adaptation vs Quality, Unintentional Implications, Lack of Outlining Stories, Writers not knowing their own stories. She debuted in 1986 and probably was the first female video game protagonist ever; which you think would check their box. Her game and Castlevania were groundbreaking combining platforming and adventure while introducing the concept of backtracking. She has been adapted into almost every form of media and whenever there are a few years between games, we come close to a mass world riot! Makee is so frustrating. I remember first hearing the character name in an early announcement, along with the fact that she was a human member of the Covenant (hence the Sangheili name). I thought, "okay, they want a Covenant viewpoint character, but aliens are expensive so they've used a human." However, having apparently become temporarily a naive moron, I assumed that she would make sense within the Halo lore; I assumed it would go something like this: Some Sangheili commander found a human baby back during the very first Covenant attacks on the outer colonies. Since most of the Covenant doesn't know the Prophets' real motives (they think the issue is "humans are heretics" not "humans are intrinsically a threat to Prophet doctrine by being the designated heirs to the Forerunners") the Elite commander quietly took her in. The Prophets of course don't know about this (she and the commander would be executed at once if they did, but the Covenant is a big, diverse place and they don't know what's going on everywhere). The Elite commander knows that humans must be conquered and punished for their heresy, but he thinks they can be "redeemed" and join the Covenant. Thus, Makee has been raised with the understanding that she must be an ambassador for the Great Journey; she will be a saviour of her people, both by redeeming them religiously (by converting them), and literally saving them from annihilation. "Human daughter, if you can make your people see the light, they won't have to be exterminated; they can join the Covenant!" While we know that the Elite is wrong and humanity is marked for total destruction by the Prophets regardless. I assumed that would be what the Makee character was -- a pro-human zealot who wants to make humanity see the light so they can be redeemed, not destroyed as heretics. A sympathetic yet twistedly misguided and dangerous character (since she sincerely believes that unrepentant heretics must be slaughtered...)

If I could offer more? : Instead of Makee being an adult from the start of her conflict, instead I offer a different path. At one point the Elite Commander's higher officer learns about the human girl while she's in about her mid or late teens, and there's some conflict as said commander considers reporting the issue to the Prophets. The Prophets eventually learn about this when the commander finally decides his loyalty to the Covenant is stronger than to his comrade. The Prophets send to have the human and her adoptive father killed. The father dies trying to protect his daughter as she barely escapes, becoming a refugee in human space and is forced to reconcile with her own people whom she cannot possibly relate with culturally. All this while she's forced to accept the reality that mankind is facing total annihilation, and that the cult she was indoctrinated in her entire life is founded upon the Prophets' lies. If she's a redeemable character, maybe her understanding of the Covenant language can allow her to perform critical codebreaking activities (where you can reuse the joke from the games that the Covenant don't actually encrypt most communications). This leads to her recovering secret intel her father had access to, which helps a strike team led by Chief to rescue a group of human captives the Covenant have been torturing for information. One of the captives turns out to be a very young boy, whose parents died when the Covenant took his planet. Makee adopts him, and her raising of him on a quiet little agriworld long after the war, in human space, bookends her journey. In the very last shot we see of her, the camera is close and looking down at her shoulder, focused on the young boy just behind her, but we notice she's wearing a ring on her finger, and an unarmored Elite's hand gently clasps her shoulder from behind.

Those are not really iconic characters, they are just the closest to a playable character you can have in those games.

Halo Legends too, which shows what you can do if you hand off the franchise to people who are competent and actually respect other people's creations. This whole series should have been animated and made in a similar way to Legends. Microsoft probably just handed the rights to whoever was willing to pay the most, and the people who got the job clearly don't respect the things other people make, thinking their own ideas and creations must be better.

FuD is not good. It's got that Spielberg trash writing where the main character is good because he doesn't want to fight...so why tf is he in the military? Stop shoe-horning young adult kids as your heroes. They suck. Blomkamf's short was good for what it was but is not the right style for Halo. That shaky came business has really outworn its welcome, Halo is not supposed to be gritty or realistic, and Blomkamf has lurched from one bad movie to the next. District 9 hasn't aged that well. I don't know who should've directed the movie/TV show, but I know that they should start with the books as the source to write from, not the games. The games should be secondary.

Fringy, you're absolutely correct about humans being Forerunners. That was the intention from square one, through every Halo game. The only info that contradicts this in the entire Bungie canon are the legendary terminals in Halo 3 - which were written by Bungie's community manager (basically, the guy who ran the website and had no input on the games outside some involvement with the ARGs and the H3 legendary terminals). His terminals are noncanon fanfiction that contradict themselves, contradict the canon terminal entries about Mendicant Bias and the Gravemind, and contradict every other piece of canon Halo lore and the plot of the games. Frankie left Bungie in 2008 to join 343 and was put in charge of the lore and story writing for 343 Halo. His first act was to commission the Greg Bear novels which first and foremost canonized his fanfiction about the Forerunners,the Flood, and the Precursors (or as I like to call them, the Beforerunners). The obvious issue with this is that if Humans are not Forerunners then there is no reason for the Human-Covenant War to happen, and thus no reason for any Halo game prior to 4 to happen besides the Prophets being kinda jealous about the Mantle of Responsibilty being given to humans instead of them I guess. If you accept 343 lore, then you can't accept Bungie lore without cognitive dissonance and vice versa. There are a lot of people who like to pretend that you can, but when you scrutinize it and actually compare it to Bungie's releases and not 343's remasters, nothing lines up. On top of all of this, Bungie's developers have stated repeatedly that humans were forerunners, on commentary tracks and social media. One even said it was bizarre that 343 "changed it." There's a good video by C3 Sabertooth that goes into great detail proving beyond a shadow of doubt that nothing prior to 343 Halo lore ever contradicts this besides noncanon materials and Frankie's terminal entries. It's called "Halo: We WERE Forerunner" and very much worth a watch.

@@MrPikaGammer They didn’t veto it lmao Halo 2’s 3rd act got scrapped. This is common knowledge. Then in the years between Halo 2 and Halo 3 they just changed the ending. Nothing in Halo 3 besides a couple legendary terminals actually indicates that they changed their mind on it. (And even those aren’t concrete proof that they weren’t in agreement) There’s Truth’s line about Johnson having been left behind by the other Forerunners (because he believed the humans still alive weren’t worthy of the afterlife and therefore didn’t travel to paradise with the other Forerunners when the rings were fired) and there’s most obviously, 343 Guilty Spark’s famous line at the end of Halo 3.

That certainly seems to be what the writers did since cameras simply don't exist in this season. Yeah, that’s the point the boys overlooked when they pushed back. I’m not sure if E;R was using this as a defense of the writing (because the discussion quickly becomes pedantic and defensive) or just to explain why the camera stuff is never brought up-which, as far as plot holes go, even affects a point they had just made about the scientists not being able to tell if anyone touched anything. “Cameras don’t exist now” is a terrible way to justify the sudden disappearance of what has previously been established as existing, but, if it’s a consistent change to the universe past a certain point, I think that’s a different kind of complaint about the writing than the “he forgot his gun for just this one scene because they needed him not to have it” examples that followed.

About the Camera thing. I think one could make an analog to Game of Thrones here. Danny forgot about the Iron Fleet, and it cost her a dragon. If the writers screwed up even more than they already did, and completely omitted the Iron Fleet from S8, that would then mean Danny's decision wouldn't cost her a dragon. That doesn't make her smarter though. The information she's working off of, from the previous seasons, where the iron fleet is present, should still have her account for it. She'd be equally as dumb in this scenario as she was in the actual show, even if the reprocussions were lesser.

Arbiter being such a tragic figure on accident is like Jake Sully accidentally being the main antagonist of Avatar 2. Case of the writers accidentally making a perfect arc that's the total opposite of the cliché they were going for. James Cameron thinks Sully's the relatable hero trying to protect his family; but at every step the movie actually shows evidence that Sully burns every bridge he makes and actively endangers every tribe he comes in contact with and then fucking off just as they're at their most fucked; even Jake's wife stops listening to him and leaning into tribalism to protect her own kids now that she's been removed from her family support network. The movie is 10x better once you realize Sully's the tragic antagonist, not the hero Cameron says he is. I feel like Fringy's at a similar point with Arbiter. The show thinks he's just a bad-man who will turn good later, but totally neglects him to instead focus on his abuser as if she's the sympathetic one; the show doesn't realize what story it's telling and sides with the wrong person

I'm convinced that if 343 had been the one to make Halo instead of Bungie (this is based off of the fact that Kiki Wolfkill was executive producer for season 2) this is what Halo would have been. Halo really doesn't deserve this level of bastardization and like Fringy said it's gotten so bad over the years that a modern Halo fan is hard to define. I'd personally argue why Halo continues to stay niche is because, whatever fanbase that remains for Halo continues to praise garbage products like Halo Infinite and this Tv show that do nothing but polarize the fanbase like as if it's their goal to kill anything that resembles the legacy of old Bungie including fans of that legacy. The standards for Halo have dropped significantly. ALSO! If the targets werent so difficult, the Spartan 3's could've always survived to fight another day. It would be lovely if people stopped trying to introduce their own stories unrelated to a franchise into a franchise. This should be a laughably easy story to write, even if you wanted a whole season to be a prequal to the original Halo. I can only conclude they hire people who are bad deliberately and greenlight scripts that are garbage because that is what they want. Theres no way anyone is this inconsistent unless it is intentional. The 'military' parts of this show are the worst though, because anyone who has PLAYED Halo can do tactics better than what was presented.

The coin flip scene comes from the Fall of Reach which was written about twenty years before the show. The point it's trying to make is John makes his own luck instead of relying on chance.
@Wyzai

... which is technically EFAP's point and problem with it: he's defying physics. Literally making luck happen out of nowhere. Also called plot armor and convenience.
@MrPikaGammer
@MrPikaGammer 8 ай бұрын
@@Wyzai they claim that it is something the show invented and constantly complain about it not being in the original lore of the series. They show they are just as ignorant to the franchise they are talking about as the showrunners are. The only difference is EFAP's ignorance lies with the novels instead of the games. Chief in the novel doesn't "make the coin go heads" he correctly guesses it repeatedly it landing both on heads and tails. The show changed the scene heavily and made it a confusing mess but doesn't imply he is breaking physics. Chief's luck is BUNGIE's explanation for why in gameplay you will seemingly stumble onto the vehicle or weapon you need just as you need it.

Yeah, I think that stupid scene from that terrible Fall of Reach animated movie just convinces everybody that's how it happened. It's not, he snatched it out of the air and made it land on the side he wanted. The whole point is to show he isn't just randomly lucky, but that he makes his own luck.

@blueblazer9991 It helps that both the writers, cast and crew alongside Oda were in alignment. They knew they had to get it right and Oda himself was a guard dog over the series. Heck he took a break from the manga to directly supervise over the series and order rewrites if it didn’t work. He owns the IP so his word goes. All in all, it was a pretty solid series. I prefer the manga and anime but on its own merits it was solid. Had the Halo series been good on its own merits we’d be having a different discussion. But since these modern creatives are such narcissists and insecure; we get crap like Halo. Also Halo has been creatively dead for years.

The discussion about how the show handled the "coin flip" really bothered me, so I went back to review how it went down in The Fall of Reach. Halsey approaches John and asks if he can pick which side the coin lands on. John grabs the quarter out of the air just before it hits the ground and correctly declares that, ironically enough, the "Tails" side is showing (it's the eagle holding arrows instead of the man's face). There is no repeat test. Certainly not the coin landing on the same side 11 times in a row. Halsey chalks it up to either John being perceptive enough to spot which side was up when he grabbed it, or else fast enough to grab it at a time when he saw that the eagle was currently up. She later describes John to Keyes as one of the "lucky" ones, which earns him a spot in the SPARTAN-II program. They could have referenced, even reinforced, that theory by having him correctly call the flip 11 times, without it being heads every time. The explanation would be that because of his genetic makeup that landed him on Halsey's radar in the first place, he had exceptionally sharp eyes and fast reflexes, enabling him to correctly spot the correct side of the coin, regardless of which it was. Instead, this really does feel like they're trying to set up a "Jimmy Rings can manipulate probability" superpower a la Domino for the X-men.
