Okay, I am gonna say it. The bombers in TLJ are a horrible WWII bomber homage. There are several reasons for this: 1. Their escort fighters are way too close. Fighter escorts always flew ahead for the bombers, so they could actually intercept enemy aircraft. Their whole purpose is too keep the fighting away from the bombers. Also bomber gunners (especially American gunners) had a tendency to shoot down any single engine aircraft that came into range. The crews were incredibly paranoid and it is very hard to identify an incoming aircraft visually especially if it is maneuvering. Also Germans would paint US and British markings on some of their inter interceptors. 2. They are to close to their target. Most bombers would fly between 20,000 and 25,000 feet. They could barley see their exact target with the naked eye. 3. Their target does not make any sense. The dreadnought is a naval target. High altitude strategic bombers where seldom used against naval targets while they were out at sea. In dock sure, but while the vessel is underway hitting it with a standard bomb dropped from high up would be next to impossible. A low level run would be suicide, they are to big to maneuver and would be an easy target for small caliber AAA (20mm to 40mm). Warships where are the best large caliber Anti Aircraft Artillery platforms of the war. US ships carried 5 inch AAA, German 88 mm and 100 mm, British 4.1 inch to 6 inch, Japanese 75 to 120mm. Sending a strategic bomber against a target that they can't hit with standard bombs and is covered in the exact kind of AAA weapon that can hit them at high altitude is a bad idea. 4. Their payload is the wrong kind of bomb that would be dropped for a naval target. First off naval warships of the time especially battle ships (dreadnoughts where the predecessor to the battleship) and some carriers had a lot of armor and so an Armor Piercing bomb would be needed. Dive bombers would dropped these kinds of bombs. However, there are examples of large multi engine aircraft going for ships. The sinking of the Tirpitz is one example. It was hit by two Tallboy earthquake bombs and a third just missed it. This caused the ship to rapidly capsize. The Tallboy was a 12,000 pound bomb used by the RAF and was dropped from the Lancaster heavy bomber. 32 bombers where used in the attack and they dropped 29 bombs in total. The second example I can think of is the Germans using the guided bomb the Fritz X. One of these could be carried by a Dornier Do 217. The bomb was guided to its target by radio control to its target. These bombs were used against a few ships, notably the Roma, Italia, USS Savannah, and HMS Uganda as well as others. 5. It makes no sense for the Resistance (Diet Rebels) to be using strategic bombers. These types of bombers carry massive payloads and would need a lot of fuel to keep operational. The logistics needed for a strategic bombing campaign are insanely complicated and require a lot of industry. The Resistance has no industry. The US was an industrial power house of the time and was in a position to not be attacked on its home soil and the British were being supplied by the US. Both nations hard large populations to supply crews and lots of capital. They both could afford the incredibly costly bombing campaign. Small numbers of these bombers would be pointless unless they were used for observation or supplying cut off units with air drops. Why a force of plucky underdogs would get these in the first place but then try to use them in a tactical situation against a naval target is beyond me. I firmly believe that Rian Johnson does not understand WWII bombers and if he made a World War II movie like he wanted too it would be just as bad as TLJ. These things and the whole scene would not even make sense in a World War II setting.
@LieutenantSilver5 жыл бұрын
In all of this technicality, I also spot an opportunity for a plot that carries greater emotional resonance. Roundhead seems to believe the best way to escalate the drama is to make one side completely helpless and incapable of effectively fighting back or inflicting any kind of damage. Every fight becomes a _Dragonball_-like parody of fight scenes. The bombers can't defend themselves against the TIEs at all. Later the ski-speeders don't even fire a single plasma bolt at anything. Scenes can raise drama even if the victims can fight back. Rogue Squadron's attack on the Death Star showed it in Episode IV. That man is a cretin. All he's good for is keeping stress off crews. If a plot needs accuracy or emotional resonance he is useless. Break out the fucking B-Wings! They were brand-new in _Return of the Jedi_ so they should be cheap, obsolete tech by the time of the Sequel Trilogy and offer a nice tie-in to the old while offering an accurate portrayal of what the Resistance is supposed to be.
@noalphabet8565 жыл бұрын
@@LieutenantSilver I agree, that is how it would be for fleet engagements but i would like to see a bombing campaign conducted by the Empire(I can settle for the First Order). I like the idea of giving storm-troopers names and faces. Placing them in the confines of a small ship with little means of protecting is self against a few determined X-wings and A-wings, would be a great way to develop a sense of comradely and brotherhood. We have seen the rebels using orbital shields and scavenged defense lasers so this rules out a direct orbital bombardment campaign. The terrain could make a large scale armored push ineffective(jungle or cavernous gorges). So the First order has to engage in the use of smaller ships that can move under the anti orbital guns to deliver large amounts of proton bombs to destroy the multiple armored shield generators being used by the resistance. The resistance is well stocked and is sitting on large amounts of fuel(since that is the driving force for every star-wars plot nowadays). Waiting them out is out of the questions, It could take decades for them to run out of supplies and the system is located along a valuable trade rout the First Order needs for its budding new empire. Every day it is under rebel control it cost the First Order mountains of cash to move goods through other systems. The resistance seeks to deny the First order this valuable base and to make them rack up costs. They're going for a long term death by a thousand cuts approach. The First Order wants the system yesterday and is per-paired to throw a lot men and material behind the war. Talk about all these in set up but focus the story on a single crew of a single bomber that is sent practically daily to attempt to bomb out the resistance.
@LieutenantSilver5 жыл бұрын
@@noalphabet856 -- Excellent idea. _Disney_ wouldn't like it too much because it humanizes the Big Bad in a _Kids' Movie About Space Wizards_ or some crap. However it's always fun to see random commenters come up with plots that are more hype-some than paid professionals. You just throw competence at a problem and the plots nearly write themselves. But give the job to an inexperienced, pampered know-nothing Hollywood-writer and they'll stumble over everything. _Maybe Hollywood should cut itself a slice of The First Order and put a janitor in charge?_

You forgot the big part that ruin the homage, the bombers in tlj are made of paper and can easily be destroyed, vs the Flying Fortress that weren’t taken down easily
@miqvPL3 жыл бұрын
also some in-universe information: the resistance is supposed to be diet rebels with small fleet and resources, right? old ass y-wing costs between 65,000 - 130,000 credits, depending if it's new or old. These bombers (they appear to have 8 of them) are most likely much more expensive, I'd say 400,000 credits per one. A proton bomb cost in universe is more or less 250 credits, torpedoes are more expensive since they need some kind of propulsion, more armor and tracking/sensor package, but the bomb is more or less 250 credits. So arming up an y-wing is a cost of like 2000 - 5000 credits, since we don't really know how many bombs they can pack, but at least 8, up to 20 (20 was in a video game)- very reasonable price. Arming up these resistance bombers? 250,000 credits each. So during that attack resistance wasted 2,000,000 credits. You could buy and arm 15 new y-wings for the cost of ammo alone. If your strategy requires droping 1000 bombs on the target then maybe it's a shit strategy- send 2 wings of faster bombers at the cannon directly and blow it to bits- the dreadnaught only has a handful of aa cannons without it's main weapon, it's just a big sitting duck. Well done disney with the shitty dreadnaught design by the way.
