EGER HUNGARY | Full City Guide with 10 Must-See Highlights

Eger is a beautiful city in Hungary and one of the super nice cities to see in Eastern Europe. It is the second largest city in Northern Hungary after Miskolc which I'm covering in a separate video (magyarország videó). Eger is a historic place in Eastern Europe and best known for its castle, thermal baths, baroque buildings and churches, the Eger Minaret, the northernmost Ottoman minaret in Europe, the unbelievable marzipan museum and the beautiful Bükk Mountains. It is one of the great European cities for travel as it is not too overcrowded with tourists and a very walkable city. All the major sites in this compact city are in walking distance.
I'm going on a walking tour through this beautiful city in Europe which has become one of my favorite cities in Hungary and I'll show you all the best places you need to see in this city to see in Eastern Europe. Stick around to the end where I will give you some additional tips for your visit to Eger and show you some drone footage from this beautiful city with a good flight over the city at sunset. It was the nicest sunset over the city I've seen in a long time as it just happened after an epic rain storm.
I hope you enjoy my walking tour through this beautiful city in Europe that is still not on major tourist maps yet. But I am sure that will change in the future.

Thank you for this wonderful video of my hometown, I'm currently typing this from here, from Eger. I'm glad you had a great time here. Also: I really hope you had a great time in Kopcsik Marcipania. As a matter of fact, I'm actually Lajos Kopcsik's grandson and I never thought one day travel vlogs are going to cover that museum when it opened back in 2005. There's one thing I would like to clarify a bit: the objects of the exhibition are actually made out of a special material that contains powdered sugar, gelatine and egg white, Not marzipan, which is sugar, honey and almond meal. Obviously, marzipan is a plasticine-like material that could never last for years and would easily get damaged by the heat and light during summer. The actual material, that sugar-egg white glaze on the other hand is a strong, almost porcelain-like material. But obviously, the name Marzipania sounds better, since marzipan is such a well known material, this is why they called it Marzipania. Thanks again for this video about my town, it was great to see you enjoying your time here.

It's nice to see how videos outside of Budapest are made. Thank you for the beautiful pictures. Eger is an important point in Hungarian history. The original town was destroyed in the Ottoman attack in 1552, and the fort was also destroyed. However, the 1,800 defenders defended the fort from the 40,000 attackers, and they had to retreat. At the time, this was a big deal, practically the only failure of the Ottoman Empire in its heyday in the region. The commanders of the attacking army were executed because of him. After that, the castle was partially rebuilt (there was little money and the work progressed slowly). The partially rebuilt castle was then attacked again in 1596, but despite the significant defense force of 7,000 people, the castle was surrendered after 3 weeks. The retreating army was massacred. This was a common practice on the Ottoman side at the time. The Turks (this is how the attacking Muslim army is referred to in colloquial language) then repaired and added new elements to the castle. It was recaptured by Christian forces in 1867. After that, only one major event happened. One of the bastions was partially demolished because of the railway being built towards Felnémet. An original poem about the 1552 attack has survived, the author Sebestyén "Lute" Tinódi, , visited the site in 1553 and interviewed the participants. In fact, he made a battlefield report entitled "Eger vár históriájáról való ének". Géza Gárdonyi elaborated the theme of the first attack in his novel Egri Csillagok. Its genre is historical romance novel. This novel was made into a film directed by Zoltán Várkonyi. The title is the same.For filming, the most important parts of the castle had to be built, as the original location was not suitable for filming. The castle was built near Budapest, on Pilisborosjenő, it became the Egri vár. The scenery is still there today, it was used for filming in several cases, and it is also a tourist destination. The grave of Géza Gárdonyi is on the Füles bastion. The inscription on his grave reads: Csak a teste (Only his body). The meaning is only his body here because his heart and soul can be found in the aforementioned novel. 3:45 Statue of István Dobó. He was the commander of the castle in 1552. Direct trains to Eger currently run hourly under the name Agria interregio. There will be a schedule change in December. You should inquire about new opportunities. Great historical overview, only mistake is that Eger was recaptured by Christians in 1687 (one year after Buda has been retaken) (but it must have been a typo)

Géza Gárdonyi also wrote about István Dobó's deed and the 1552 Egri triumph in his work Egri Csillagok, which is also an adventure, youth and historical novel. The novel was later made into a film. It is true that Gárdonyi wrote a good work, but it differs from history in that it mentions 200,000 Turks, in reality there were only 35-40,000, but the fact that there were only 2,000 is already true

Beautiful town, but there are not medieval streets. They are from XVIIIth to XIXth century. Mainly of baroque style. Pratically is austrian baroque and neoclassic, derivated from the italian ones. Greater austrian architects studied at San Luca Academy in Rome and magyar architects copied from them, studying in Wien. The sole more ancient thing is the turk minaret.

Thank you Giorgio. You are right, most of the buildings are more recent. Eger was founded in the 11th century and parts of the fortress date back to shortly after. I assume that some of the streets around the fortress and minaret are also quite old but didn’t verify. Thanks for watching!

It depends on where you fly. In some zones you need to get prior authorization. You also need to register your drone with the National Aviation Authority and get insurance.

There is a 147km! long wine cellar system under the city, I think it’s one of the biggest in Central Europe and the wine is good;)

I am Hungarian but left Hungary 11 years ago and ever since then I've been working in aviation and I have traveled and lived all over the world, and as I am looking at travel videos of Hungary I feel sad, because there is literally nothing in this country other than Budapest which has any touristic importance on a global scale. Hungary is a flat and absolutely boring country with nothing to see at all once you finished with Budapest in 3-4 days. Compared to countries and places like Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, France, Arizona, Utah, California, Florida, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Dubai, New York, Australia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Columbia, Cuba, Acapulco, Mexico, Iceland.... Hungary is not in the same league with these places. When I travel in Hungary I feel so empty like there isn't any beauty in the nature there aren't sparkling huge cities (other than Budapest) there is literally nothing. This summer I went to Hungary and visited Tisza-To which is like a tiny artificial swamp and that's like a dream destination to Hungarians... and I am like where are the crystal clean lakes of Switzerland, where is the blue ocean, where are the red rock towers and canyon of Arizona, where are the buzzling and skyscrapers of Dubai, where are the natural hot rivers and abundant jungle vegetation of New Zealand, where is the great barrier reef of Australia, where is New York the city that never sleeps.... Nothing absolutely nothing in Hungary that would be interesting to come here and visit, and Hungarians who lived their whole life there and could not afford to travel to truly beautiful places they don't even understand how boring and uninteresting and insignificant our country is. They just see a tiny insignificant country side city and start telling me how beautiful it is, and I am like yeah for you it might be, because you only leave your 1000 people population isolated village 4 times in a decade, of course you find it beautiful, and it may sound arrogant, I would never tell this to anyone verbally because they would hate me, but on the internet when no one knows me I think it's okay to share my true feelings. I also tried to show Hungary to my wife, she was born and raised in HongKong, and I realized after we left Budapest she stopped taking pictures, we went to Szekesfehervar and Veszprem, and Balatonfured, from Budapest on the highway within one day, and then when we were on a tiny hill in the middle of Veszprem and we saw the view of the city from there and I said it's kind of cute view isn't it, and my wife's answer was like I don't understand how can people live in such a boring place... Althought she took like 2-3 pictures at the Tihany Apatsag next to lake Balaton, but come on what's that compared to Lac Leman or Lake Brienz in Switzerland, or Lake Como in Itally, or lake Moraine in the Rockies in Canada, if the views on the side of those lake are 100% then the view from Tihany Apatsag over Balaton is like 30%.... We have really been all over the world with her literally, after that ehm... Hungary is quite dissapointing. I do not mean to troll around, Janus you really made a phantastic video of a subject that is boring as you can imagine grey Eastern Europe is.

Thanks for watching. Most countries in Southeastern Europe are predominantly Christian, with the exception of Albania and Kosovo. But there are historical Ottoman sites that are worth seeing in the region, including in Eger. In my travels in the region I did not come across woke or cancer but many friendly and hospital people
