Great video! Thanks for explaining the connection between the thermostat, water pump, and heater core, now I know what else to look for if the thermostat replacement doesn't solve the problem.Explained very well - what other parts affect the thermostat functioning and what failing parts could mimic thermostat failure. Very well done video!

Extremely informative and well spoken my friend! Maybe you can help me. I have a 4.7 liter V8 Magnum in my 2004 Durango. It was having cooling issues for about 3 years and could only be driven to work and back. It would overheat on long trips. I finally decided to replace my radiator after trying the thermostat and temperature sensor with no improvement. After I installed the brand new radiator and brand new upper and lower hoses and had already done a flush and refilled everything with a 50/50 mix of coolant and water everything was awesome for 2 weeks! It was cooling like the car was brand new. Then suddenly the other day it was trying to overheat on a warm day when I came home from work just like it used to before the new radiator. I have checked over everything and even bought a brand new radiator cap with the pressure release lever and it is still doing it. There is no loss of coolant to be seen under the vehicle and the reservoir jug is staying right in the middle of the minimum and full mark. I checked the little hose that goes to the reserve jug and it is not clogged and the pulley with the fan that goes through my water pump is not wobbly and there is no antifreeze leaking anywhere around it. The heat works just fine so I don't think I have a clog in the heater coil. Do you think this can be a failing water pump with a bad impeller since nothing else is obviously wrong? I thought about replacing the thermostat again, but it's only about 7 or 8 months old. I also thought about replacing the serpentine belt although it looks really good even though it's the original one and I have driven the vehicle 115,000 miles.

Great video John! Thank you! As an aside, I’ve been searching for a pair of great work gloves. Ideally I’d like them to allow for dexterity/tasks which require fine motor skills. I’d also love a pair which are at least water resistant if not water proof. That being said, I love the gloves you’re wearing in this video. Please let me know the brand, style, maybe even where I can get a pair. Thanks again! Anna

Hello I have Volvo 850 GLT 1995, before I change the radiator I flush out all the coolant and then after I installed the radiator I put some water in the reservoir but I notice the water won't drop in to engine and radiator. I start the car and run on idle for 3 minutes but still the water won't circulate. It's all stock up with the reservoir. I un plug the drain plug in the radiator but no water, it's clear that water didn't reach the radiator. It's all stock in reseviour. Do you this its the water pump has the problem? Pls help!

Or you can try and flush the heater core. Recommend doing the flow backwards, then forwards, and repeat.

So I just changed my water pump with a brand new one same with my thermostat. Heater works and gets hot, truck doesn’t over heat BUT the top of my radiator and top hose gets hot to the touch while the bottom hose and bottom of the radiator remain ice cold… is my radiator bad/clogged?

Head gasket leaks, cracked head or cracked block cause over heating as well, easy way to know if it is a leak there, is if there is water in your oil, check the oil cap if it is covered with a milky white foam then water is in your oil and that can be the problem... However, with some cars like the 2000 intrepid the water pump is inside the engine and driven by the timing chain, [ugh.. Why did they put it there?! Grrrr] this can also cause water in the oil and over heating. Also a plugged radiator and or non-working electric rad fan as well can cause over heating as well.
@Skeksix
@Skeksix 6 жыл бұрын
The milky substance in the oil cap doesn't always mean the head gasket has failed or is failing. Cars driving very short journeys can cause it due to condensation, especially in the colder weather.

EHOWAUTO *** ()) Is there any other water pump testing you can do to test and check if the water pump is pumping water into the cars engine and into the cars radiator correctly? How do you test the water pumps Pressure, how much Pressure the water pump hoses are at? The Purpose of the Water Pump is to circulate the radiators coolant into the engine and radiator?

Sounds like youve got a bad thermostat. Does it cool down when you turn on the heater? If so then your thermostat has officially taken a dump.

I dont see how a clogged heater core can cause an overheat condition. The pipe that goes to the heater and returns is an auxiliary pipe that has nothing to do wirh cooling the engine.

Not necessarily depends on if your water pump is working correctly or if you have enough water in your radiator also check the radiator cap

Another drawback to not rep[lacing the thermostat is,.. although you will have good flow and cooling in the summer, you will have very long warm up times for engine in winter and heater/defogger and carburetor choke mechanism will not function properly when you most need it. Bypassing the heater core will leave vehicle without heat and defogger when needed. Water pumps and thermostats are very likely to go bad after one or the other fails so it would be a good idea to...forward and backward flush engine, radiator/cooling system and change thermostat if you replace water pump. Might be a good idea to replace water pump if your thermostat failed for a long time... sounds expensive but it will save time, effort and money if you do these things while parts are exposed instead of paying for, or doing the labor for each part individually. Just saying.
