In Bulgaria we have a long tradition of using elderberry as a remedy. We prepare a syrop (concentrate) from the fruit and usually treat not only poor immune system, but (don't know if you heard of that) - iron deficiency. Most women going through puberty experience low levels of Iron, and the traditional medicine doctors prescribe all kinds of pills which work short term. Myself and a close girlfriend of mine have treated our anemia with drinking 1 tbsp edlerberry syrop first thing in the morning on a empty stomach. And it worked. A note on this treatment was to do it for several month 6 to 8 and then to do a break for 3-4 months (don't know exactly why, we were told (from our grandparents) that this is better way to go for the body). So in my country we utilise elderberry a lot. But the most popular part of the plant is actually its flowers, which are being picked and steamed again to prepare a syrop (concentrate) which is deluded with water to prepare a refreshing "lemonade"

Elderberry grows wild all around my house, and for several years now I've been picking it every summer for juice, freezing/preserving lots for winter use. This is obviously only a personal anecdote but I can tell you, my immune system has never been stronger. I love the stuff. I also make tea from elder flowers which is very good. The whole plant is an amazing thing. Also, there's a good chance you don't need to buy it in a store. It grows prolifically throughout much of the continental US, all over the place. A very common wild edible. It's very rewarding to harvest it and cook it yourself.
@patriddle56885 жыл бұрын
Some say they r poisonous... so u blend then freeze?
@i.l.l.l.l.5 жыл бұрын
@@patriddle5688 they contain a glycoside which can upset the stomach if ingested raw. But cooking the berries fixes this by destroying the glycosides and makes them perfectly safe, and the good elements aren't destroyed by cooking, only the bad stuff.
@i.l.l.l.l.5 жыл бұрын
I collect the raw berries and put them in a pot with enough filtered water to cover them. Then I heat and boil them, which destroys the glycoside. Then I mash them up into a pulp, take them off the heat, let them cool (with the pot covered with a lid) and strain the juice with either a sieve or cheesecloth. I then pour the strained juice into jars/bottles and freeze until needed. You can also can them in a mason jar, sterilize and seal them, then store them at room temperature all year, but that takes several more steps and is a bit more complicated. Freezing is easier. And of course you can also make jams and jellies, pies or even wine with elderberries. It's a very versatile fruit.
@nonewherelistens19065 жыл бұрын
@@i.l.l.l.l. I have found that freezing the berry clusters until ready to use is much easier. I make about three quarts of syrup/extract at one time and it holds up well in the refrigerator. Typically takes 3 to 4 weeks to go thru a batch, then I make a new one. Am absolutely sold on its effectiveness.
@i.l.l.l.l.5 жыл бұрын
Better to make the juice fresh and then freeze the juice in jars or bottles, rather than freezing the raw berries. Freezing the raw berries will take up wayyyyyy more storage space in your freezer. Why waste space?

I was getting horrible bronchitis every winter... I'm talking coughing my brains out all day long, and not being able to lie down at night, because that made it even worse... one winter I coughed for 9 days and my sides hurt every time I coughed. Once I figured out it was viral bronchitis and not bacterial, I tried elderberry extract, because it's a known anti viral, but it didn't help, then I realized it was a low amount of elderberry in each dose, and that half the dose was elderberry leaves as a filler, and I switched to a much more potent elderberry extract brand, and that made a radical difference, to the point of keeping me from getting bronchitis anymore! I take one teaspoon per day during winter - it works, don't let anyone tell you differently!

Ashley L First thing I'll tell you is to RELAX!! Don't allow anybody to convince you that it's permanent or incurable because it's NOT! Secondly you need to understand contrary to what you've probably been taught asthma IS NOT a anatomical problem (not a problem of the lungs) asthma is caused by deficiency and toxicity. You find and correct them with sufficiency and purity health results. The first thing you need to do is get your neck corrected! c3, c4 and c5 of the cervical spine supply the diaphragm (fine musle control of the lungs), if nerve supply is lessened by a reverse curve, flattend neck or forward head carriage in general.. will result in asthma. There can also be an autoimmune component which is also effected by the physical stress caused by forward head carriage - and therefore may also be resolved by this correction. We can also talk about diet and helpful herbs such as mullen tea which helps tremendously.

In Germany it’s well known and used in a lot of different ways. The flowers are good for tea, make sparkling wine, make elderberry flower honey or deep fry it in a light beer dough. The fruit gives a tasty juice, enriched with starch and sago (looks like frog egg when cooked), add some crusty back roll crumps and some slices of organic lemons it’s a delicious soup in the winter and fights off the cold. You can find the bush in the wild or besides the houses of farmers. It fights off witches, witchcraft and evil spirits. As kids we made blowpipes out of the bark of fingers strong branches. It’s amazing. But never eat raw, always cook or you get stomach pain. Oh, and the stained clothes you have to throw away or change the color with more juice entirely, so you get a nice purple color. My grandma has an old book „Pharmacy of God“ and it’s a treasure chest.

Native Americans used elderberries for various medicinal purposes. The berries were traditionally used to create remedies for ailments such as colds, flu, and fever due to their immune-boosting properties. Elderberry preparations, such as teas, syrups, and poultices, were also used to treat wounds, burns, and skin conditions. Additionally, elderberries were valued for their nutritional content and were incorporated into the Native American diet. The berries were dried and stored for consumption during the winter months, providing a source of vitamins and antioxidants. Apart from medicinal uses, different parts of the elder tree, including the berries, flowers, and bark, were used to create dyes for textiles and crafts. The hollow stems of elderberry plants were used to make flutes and blowguns. Overall, elderberries held significant cultural and practical importance in Native American communities, serving both medicinal and functional purposes. Thanks for listening

I always pick a few bunches and add the fruits to my wild BlackBerry stash...Housewives for time immemorial have done this to help the family through the winter. There are many studies that prove elderberry to be incumbent in fighting viral infections. NB Be sure the elderberries are RIPE...because their alkaloid content can cause sickness.

I take elderberry in November I'm in Northern Michigan and this is when the seasons change also hunting season is starting so not only is it suddenly much colder but I'm also outside in the cold in the early morning and evening. Seems to help prevent me from getting sick.

Maybe it isn't a matter of whether the quercetin OR the kaempferol is the biggest help to the immune system, but rather the two combined with each other or with the other elements of the elderberries. It might be similar to iron being better absorbed and utilized with copper and vitamin C.

science shows some great nutritional benefits from elderberries, not much diff than other natural foods. id say most my life my respiratory health has been pretty damn good. Maybe like 2x a year that I 'get sick' or 'catch a cold'...and thats being modest where most of those times it was from being out a lot esp partying smoking drinking excessively. Ive been a daily smoker for over 20yrs now, where the first 8 years I was also fat overweight and out of shape yet still my resp health was very good during those years. Once I got into working out and eating healthy as part of my daily lifestyle, i felt my inner body get even stronger cleaner and healthier. What I noticed was the main key in resp health over the years was the food I consumed growing up and how I eat today. As an (east) Indian, our culture food has lots of different spices and ingreidents as the way its cooked, it very diff from north american culture food. I dont eat spicy food daily, but often enough and consume lots of fresh raw foods along with herbal teas. All year long. So all this to say, even as a daily smoker for over 20 yrs now who grew up drinking smoking partying eat out , spent 8 yrs fat overweight and out of shape, with all that, its rare I get sick/catch a cold, considering my lifestyle choices over those years, I shouldve gotten sick or catch cold/flu way more often, whereas there as so many who rarely drink/smoke or party and are sick all year long. To me, that makes no sense

JAMA, looked at dietary trends over an 18-year period published today. Although the study identified some dietary improvements, it also found that low-quality carbohydrates from refined grains, starchy vegetables, and added sugars accounted for 42 percent of the typical American's daily calories. Yah think!!! It took 18 years for JAMA to either spreads misinformation or admit they were wrong about something for the last 75 years. That's deadly.
